Sakurai is in EZ Mode right now. The Switch version of Smash is just adding onto the current game, and doesn't require the constant work that he used to have to put in during main development

Yeah, but people hated the physics compared to Melee's. That and the modes were a bit lacking (mainly Adventure mode).

I want better music selection, for one thing. The choices for the guest character stages are absolutely pathetic and there's bad decisions on the first-party stuff.

For a port, I think the most likely characters we'll see were the ones that were cut, I.E. Ice Climbers, Chorus Kids, and the others.

For a full-blown sequel, I think characters that got enough fan clamor to revieve costumes have a high chance, K. Rool, Chrom, Geno, MonHun MC.
I think Ashley has the highest chance of the bunch since she's one of the few Wario characters that a lot of people care about, and just got an assist trophy on top of it. So I can easily see her becomeing the Little Mac of Smash 5.
Inklings are pretty much a shoe-in at this point, but everything I feel is just speculative.

As long as NSMB-style reigns, the chances of Geno appearing approach 0 as he isn't the sanctioned Mario/Luigi/Peach/Toad/Rosalina combo that is currently allowed.

Wario lost practically his entire cast, with only Ashley and Waluigi still around to maintain the memory that he was more than lefartman. Same with Donkey Kong only having Diddy and Cranky.

So as you all know, Project M Legacy XP finally released and includes Geno, Ridley, Metal Sonic, Lucina, and Waluigi. Geno has a surprisingly excellent kit, which really makes me hope he'll be in the next official Smash game. But for now, I'm happy with playing PM at 1440p with five bonus characters and over 700 stages (granted, most are just the same stage with subtle changes, but it's fucking fantastic that the modders recreated many of the Smash 4 stages.)

Yeah back then when they were producing Melee they did some polls in Japan. Characters like Diddy, Dedede, Sonic, Ridley, Geno and others I don't remember were named. Also they did the same with Brawl and had similar results. The latest one was different as people wanted Dark Pit, Miku, Chrom. Some retards voted for Mario and Kirby.

I'd argue you could combine a lot of fanservice onto one character rather than include a bunch of characters to address individual bits (like Duck Hunt for Zappers and ROB for Gyromite), but OK. Still, for the sake of argument, what would playable Ashley add that would justify upgrading her from AT status? Zelda already handles magic, and if the aim is just to add a kid to the roster, Squids are much much more likely.

The only one I could think work is Impa. As much as I like it and want it, there's no way that someone from Hyrule Warriors will get into smash. I'd personally rather see Zelda characters not named Sheik get a rework but the movesets are probably set in stone.

Zelda arguably has the largest number of unused possible reps of any core Nintendo series, sans Mario (maybe). Impa, Midna & Wolf Link, Ganon, Toon Zelda, Sheik, Tingle, Ghirahim, and Skullkid off the top of my head.

If the smash for the console is a port of 4, which I personally don't see as all that likely, then the Inklings are pretty much first in line to get in.
