The Arks were launched in the beginning to mid-way through Mass Effect 3 as a Plan B if Shepard were to fail (this could have been easily retconned by now)

It's because of what's happening on the Developer Twitters. Now that they've removed the BioWare forums you have to follow a multitude of different Twitter Accounts and Tumblr Diaries from the Developers.

It all comes down to this, going by last thread. Whenever they refer to the Asari; not all the time but some/most of the time they always add Male/Female right next to the word Asari.
So, as an example, one someone in the other thread saw was along the lines of "Yes, there will be Asari Male/Female in this game"

This has gone into high gear of speculation as to what they mean. Usually whenever someone referred to Asari there was NO NEED to add Male/Female next to it because they could breed with anyone, anything of any sex and still reproduce. Now they're using this term and the Tumblrinas are freaking out that it's some new identification or species of Asari we uncover

This all comes from the last thread and the one before it earlier today as well as some light skimming from a few of the Developers I could find.

It doesn't make much sense. Their species doesn't need genetic material from other species in the sense of semen, so they'd have no reason to produce it. If they had no vaginas, their species also wouldn't evolve something to put into a vagina. Plus, while they don't engage in typical gene transfer, they do give live birth, so they'd need a passage to give birth.

Even if it's no-ball futa, the shit about them not needing to evolve or have penises for any reason still stands. Plus, we never see any women pregnant with Asari children, so it's not like they're capable of passing on their genes to other species anyway.
