Valve Fixing False Advertising Problem

oneangrygamer.net/2016/11/steam-now-requires-devs-to-show-only-in-game-screenshots-on-store-page/15584/

>Valve has apparently sent out word to developers to start to update their store page listings on Steam to remove concept art, cinematic stills or images of the game that are not actually representative of the in-game play.

>“We ask that any images you upload to the ‘screenshot’ section of your stoe page should be screenshots that show your game. This means avoiding using concept art, pre-rendered cinematic stills, or images that contain awards, marketing copy, or written product descriptions. Please show customers what your game is actually like to play.”

Why does Valve take so long to do shit like this?

>Why does Valve take so long to do shit like this?
too busy developing hl3 l4d3 and ricochet 2

Company structure and gabe being a fat lazy fuck

At least they're doing shit like this.

They take a long time to implement changes but they are beneficial in the long run. They get closer and closer to having most of the features Enhanced Steam does.

>Enhanced Steam
?

So many people will lose their jobs over this.

This is way too extreme.
The rule should be forcing devs to at the very least include pictures AND videos of their game but they should not be unable to release their own cinematics and art of it as well.

It's perfectly fine

A browser plugin for enhanced functionality on Steam pages.

>Why does Valve take so long to do shit like this?

Honestly, why do anything when you can wash your hands of all responsibility, sleep and still print money?

>cinematic stills or images of the game
Surely they'd be able to upload a trailer in addition to the in-game screenshots. It looks like that line is forbidding just screens from cinematics.

Bullshots like this will still be allowed so it's fucking pointless

>>Valve has apparently sent out word to developers to start to update their store page listings on Steam to remove concept art, cinematic stills or images of the game that are not actually representative of the in-game play.
Thats fucking funny cause they were the ones who changed it. Old items only show the set not the art

Game actually looks like that though. At least mine does.

yeah of course it does

but that picturei s bad and it tells me the game is bad

>muh small government

>Muh bullshots

Stop being a poorfag and you can get your game to look like promotional screenshots provided they're not from a pre-downgraded version of the game

Damn, finally something is being done.

>Stop being a poorfag
eat the rich

Fuck whoppers are good

Valve is one of the few companies that still cares about the state of the industry.

Valve only did this so when the next next mans scam comes out they won't feel even slightly obligated to refund money outside the usual window. Saving themselves money in the long term, though it helps the consumer in this instance.

das rite

>artwork section
>please don't upload artwork for the game

One of the benefits of being a private company. You don't have to give a shit about what the shareholders think because Newell is the sole shareholder. He can fucking do anything he likes (or do nothing).

The thing is, video games are a business now, which means it gets fucked up by all the things that happen in business like shipping broken garbage because you have a schedule to keep. A CEO can be installed who doesn't know the first thing about what the audience wants, only that you can use tools like DLC to bulk up revenues. There are benefits to having people around who know how to run a business, but the pitfalls are many and all too well known.

Valve does a lot of shit I don't like (actually it's more like they do nothing). But they do a lot of things that are pro-consumer and they're pretty much one of the few video game companies who are like that.

It's not just about the graphical fidelity. It's about the composition, the perfect placement of everything in the picture. You will NEVER see that scene in the game. It's misleading.

Also good luck getting the fire look like this in the game.

This is in the game.
It's the side quest where you save the elf woman.
It looks exactly like this in the actual game.

This seems to affect early access games and Visual Novels the most.

Fire doesn't look that good in the game. Prove me wrong.

>screenshots are the only form of false advertising
Valve hasn't fixed anything until they actually hire people to check the games they sell and remove all the trash from their store.

Of course they will never do that, because having quality control and rejecting games means that all the affected publishers, devs and their customers would go to other distribution platforms, which would result in more competition to Steam.

Yeah, they depend on people to refund in mass before they take actions.

Not like it doesn't happen, there is the N1Z1 thing, I forget the name exactly, and also bamham 3

Will they fix the false screenshots from CSGO too?

:( >:[

There is going to be a another gallery for all the non-screenshots? Something like a separate artwork section for the artwork, concept art and cinematic trailers, right?

just visit the game's website, they all a media section
use google search

>>Why does Valve take so long to do shit like this?
no man's sky triggered them

So will they finally stop devs from advertising their games as early access when really they're full releases?

Why do that when you never ever have to? Valve don't even make games anymore because they can take shit from the community and sell it back to themselves and make far far more money. Its been building up for fucking years but we are now at the point where there enough fake bullshit economies running that Valve never really have to do anything ever again.

if it means the con artists and thieves get put out of business and forces more honest treatment of the customers, then they are a necessary sacrifice for the greater good.

>The thing is, video games are a business now

Too true. For a vast majority of companies, video games are a way to squeeze a much money out of the consumer, and spend as little as possible doing so.

That's why they hire the CEOs you describe; because they are good at achieving THAT result.

Which is sad.

it's called the screenshot box. there is no artwork section on steam pages.

>waaaaah, this company with a monopoly is allowing everything to be sold
>I'm not being exploited enough

I will never understand how retards like you can cry about a lack of quality control. Any game that wants to sell on PC needs to go through them. I'd much rather they be impartial and allow people to sell what they want than start picking and choosing of blatantly shady self-interest.

Well I woke up this morning
On the wrong side of the bed
And how I got to thinkin'
About all those things you said
About ordinary people
And how they make you sick
And if callin' names kicks back on you
Then I hope this does the trick
'Cause I'm sick of your complainin'
About how many bills
And I'm sick of all your bitchin'
'Bout your poodles and your pills
And I just can't see no humor
About your way of life
And I think I can do more for you
With this here fork and knife
Eat the rich
There's only one thing that they are good for
Eat the rich
Take one bite now - come back for more
Eat the rich
I gotta get this off my chest
Eat the rich
Take one bite now - spit out the rest
So I called up my head shrinker
And I told him what I'd done
He said you best go on a diet
Yeah, I hope you have some fun
And a don't go burst the bubble
On rich folks who get rude
'Cause you won't get in no trouble
When you eats that kinda food
Now they're smokin' up their junk bonds
And then they go get stiff
And they're dancin' in the yacht club
With muff and uncle biff
But there's one good thing that happens
When you toss your pearls to swine
Their attitudes may taste like shit
But go real good with wine
Eat the rich
There's only one thing that they are good for
Eat the rich
Take one bite now - come back for more
Eat the rich
I gotta get this off my chest
Eat the rich
Take one bite now - spit out the rest
Believe in all the good things
That money just can't buy
Then you won't get no bellyache
From eatin' humble pie
I believe in rags to riches
Your inheritance won't last
So take your gray poupon my friend
And shove it up your ass
Eat the rich
There's only one thing that they are good for
Eat the rich
Take one bite now - come back for more
Eat the rich
I gotta get this off my chest
Eat the rich
Take one bite now - spit out the rest
Eat the rich
There's only one thing that they are good for
Eat the rich
Take one bite now - come back for more
Eat the rich

the fire in question really does look retouched

Related.

>Offering your customers good products is shady
Reminder that PC gaming was a lot better when it actually took effort to distribute a game.
The first early access games (Mountain Blade, Minecraft and KSP) were huge successes because they could only spread through word of mouth and therefore needed to be actually good.
Since Steam took on the early access business model it's 99% trash because all the dev needs to do to turn a profit is to put a 80% discount on your game and have it on the front page of Steam for a day.

>as adults we know
>vidya is mostly bought by kids and manchildren who don't know
yeah, shlomo, that doesn't work in this case.

>have indie dev friend
>helped him out a fair bit with his game since two people quit
>he never paid me due to not having the "funds"
>releases on steam selling for $5
>he sells a bunch but then game dies off
>uses concept art and deceptive footage to advertise it
>today he complains to me about steam saying he must change it to actual in-game footage otherwise his game will be removed from the steam store
>laugh my ass off
>tell him it's bad karma
>he deletes me off all social media
>he makes some long ass fagbook post about people stabbing him in the back and wanting to see him fail

Valve can't even curate the stream of shit indie games while it wants to curate screenshots.
I hope it won't end up with lot of old games being removed due to spergs losing their shit over bunch of bullshots.

fucking kikes

The game actually looks better than that. Shading and shit is all completely off, it LOOKS like it's shopped.

Even on Ultra, the lighting is fucking drab and horrible. I've to mod the game to make it looks glorious like in the trailer.

Wow, amazing. For once, the game industry raises the bar, instead of lowering it.

Too bad the bar is still near the core of the earth.

That's an extremely - EXTREMELY light case of bullshot, compared to the usual shit we see from the AAA industry.

You just want to be a contrarian screamlord, because W3 wasn't up your alley, plus you're probably a massive fucking snob with a warped and narrow sense of what is and isn't good. But I ain't having that shit, sorry.

And everyone of course has an universal idea of good quality right?

toy makers literally do have to disclose if they use stop-motion, special effects, or even scenery that is not included.

I don't know what BK does nowadays, but the last time I got a whopper it looked exactly like the advertised version.

Because it takes games like NO GUY BUY to make people realize where problems are.

Honestly, they should regulate the sales pitch of the store entires at least as much. There's some blatant lies on the entires sometimes.

jews

They're still allowed to put them on the store page, just not in the screenshot section.

>9 out of 10 ads on Cartoon Network made the toys seem so fucking hype, I'd constantly beg my parents to buy me most of them, or just fucking any of them.
>Looking back now, I clearly would have picked a lot of those up, played with it for a day and then never touch them again, possibly.
>Glad I my parents knew better.

Yeah, you know what, I agree with that fucking proposal.

>you're just a witcher 3 hater!!!

holy shit kys

protip: witcher 3 was my goty last year

So here is the question. Is this a gameplay screenshot?

is this a gameplay screenshot?

For the people who STILL harps on Valve for not having a good curation, Valve's position is basically:

• You can sell in our place
• But do it honestly

They don't care about quality because quality is subjective.

This is actually bullshit for very low profile indie devs. I have a friend who put out an RPG Maker game for something like $0.99. He commissioned artwork for his characters' portraits during dialogue. He didn't think the RPG Maker screens would give a good sense of the plot, so he had a bunch of related artwork on the store instead as approx. half of the screenshot reel. Just because he wanted to get the style and feel across, not because he wants to rip anyone off.

Idunno. I hate it when a AAA title has ONLY bullshots and bullshot trailers on the store page. Like, that's some proper cancer bullshit. But I don't mind bullshots if they're accompanied by a good amount of actual screenshots. Bullshots should be optional as additional promo.

How will Japanese devs handle this?

PC received the last gen version of Pirate Warriors 3 but the store page shows PS4 screenshots.

>A Chrome-exclusive browser-addon for enhanced functionality on Steam pages, which is necessary because the Steam-Support-bots are absolutely incapable of escalating bugreports.

"screenshot" is simply the shot of whatever your screen captures within the game.

just put them on "about the game" or something

Funny when you talk about minecraft while Undertale is a thing on Steam

> videogames are ruined because buyers are retards
> somehow Valve fault

Fuck off, user. Respectfully.
Playstation 2 was the golden age of modern gaming and it had the biggest library of shovelware consoles have ever seen.

And what exactly is your definition of quality control here
Friendly reminder that most top games on Steam right now are all considered shit by Sup Forumstards, and there are many emulators game in top 20 of Steam

h1z1 never had a mass refund. It was The War Z, which was a carbon copy clone of their other MMO shooter, which was a cloned cryengine game with some minor changes.

Check the picture.

These are also the people who literally copy-pasted their terms of service and EULA from league of legends. Literally ctrl+c/ctrl+vd that bitch, all of the relevant text still said riot games, league of legend, etc etc.

this game was a fucking disaster.

H1Z1, however, was a pretty solid game. They even offered no questions asked, any playtime refunds when they split the game in two (basically just said "fuck yall" to the people who played the base survival game, and they're now focusing 100% entirely on the battle royale type game mode. Which is fun, but still.

Really it's less about restrictions than it is about putting the proper recyclables on their respective bins.

What's the game and name of your friend user?

He just excommunicated you, so why do you care about protecting his identity?

what's more interesting is that the options to make the game look similar to the trailers are already there, if you can be fucked to mess around with the console and config files

What the fuck is going on with the reflections in the water?

that's the point. It's literally just a fucking mirrored image of the ground around it, it's not water at all. Which, is really, REALLY confusing.

Why are you spamming this thread?
You literally posted the exact same thing yesterday and the day before that.
You're just shilling for you shitty news site so you can get your daily click quota and be payed 10 cents.
Fuck off.

>Why does Valve take so long to do shit like this?
Because honestly 99% of the pictures were already doing it.
Actually, my problem is that most games show ingame pics without the UI, or badass promotional screenshots at impossible angles. But no one can know if it's actually a possible thing or not until the game is out.

I don't know if that properly explains how the water is showing the FRONT view of the sign.

If you never played it, it's a bit hard to explain. the water is actually static and didn't move, it's just a mirror type object, with ripple effects thrown on top of the image and stretched on to an area. You immediately died if you entered the "water", even. The game was a total fucking disaster. So much so that, like I said, they offered refunds, before steam refunds was an actual program.

It now goes by the name infestation survivor stories, and because of ANOTHER fuckup, the game is pulled from sale on steam, though the page is still up and you can check it.

Because all Valve cares about is money. Before they did not have to issue refunds. Now they do. They lose money on each refund. Because they are getting so many refund requests over this stuff they want to pat it down as much as possible. I expect many more changes that effectively remove the reasons people use to get refunds by doing stuff like this.

I'm surprised nobody has started some sort of "Bullshot police" curator to track all games not following the new rules.

Enhanced Steam is on Firefox too.

there are dozens, they're never featured on the front page for obvious reasons.

Here's a comparison between the promotional shot vs in-game untouched, and then with STLM at the bottom.
Quite different to say the least.

the only difference is the lighting
the lack of a horse and water on the ground

>The only difference is this one most important thing that makes it look different

Okay.

ok
sorry and the size of the fire

Keep carrying that water for CDPR, cuckboy

Pictures like this are always bullshit. Every time I get fast food it looks nice and tasty, but I guess the vegetarians just gotta spread their propaganda at all costs

You mean the game has differing time of day systems? Woah.

You just hate witcher 3, you contrarian edgelord!

Sorry, just imitating this moron

I was thinking about that myself. While whoppers clearly don't look as good as the one on the left, it does always seem like they try their hardest to hunt down the single worst fast food restaurant in the state just to grab a picture like that.

Or they intentionally make it look worse. Could be either or.

technically it is, but they are like posing shit for a picture rather than taking a screen shot while playing.
