it's weird kind of limbo, but for the most part it works out. it'd be nice if there were more games that truly built upon SM's flawless formula and made something new and exciting instead of just something similar.

Prime was so good because Retro fought back and called Tanabe out on his stupidity. Wayforward could make a pretty good 2D Metroid if given the chance I think.

The current people at Retro made DK Returns and Tropical Freeze, which are the best fucking platformers in many, many years. They definitely still have the requisite talent.

I liked Metroid Prime's lore. The universe is full of interesting locations, and it's not wrong to want to explore that. They just keep probing the least interesting parts of the world such as the Adam backstory and the Federation.
