They began being that early in the crystal dynamics era.
>platforming, exploration, and puzzle-solving ever again.
Well of course. Those things are ableist
The early TR are way too video gamey.
I know they're mobile games. But Lara croft go and Lara croft relic run are the best tomb raider games we've had since 2007.
continuously locking the butler inside the mansion is one of my greatest vidya experiences
Just play the Lara Croft games you fucking idiot.
Oh wait, you won't because you never were actually in it for the gameplay.
ol-Lara was a right cunt desu
nu-Lara is a qt pie

Tomb Raider didn't have good platforming, exploration, and puzzles in the first place.
Sure the the shitty reboots have auto platforming, but they just streamline the lack of depth the originals had.
I was in it for those dinosaur levels. If you don't think finding a colony of surviving dinosaurs while adventuring is the tightest shit, then get outta my face.
>tfw
Why does Lara look like she has facial paralysis.
Early, early CGI. Tomb Raider was one of the very first big 3D games at the start of the PS1/N64 generation.
It's funny how marketing tried to sell her on how sexy she was, considering how trollish she was in the first game. They improved her significantly by the second, but the first is what made her famous for being a sex symbol in the first place.
So Sup Forums...
Favorite TR from PS1 era?
>TR3
Favorite from the first reboot?
>Anniversary
Tomb Raider 3 disc 2 was too spooky for my early teen self so I never finished it.
Best in the series though, except that London level.
there are people that complain about lara's control
I remember my local funcoland had a Lara croft mannequin they were using to advertise tomb raider 4. I was 15 at the time and the guy who managed that particular store was my friends brother and let me have it. I didn't w at my parents knowing about it so I kept it a secluded wooded area on our property. I had big plans for it. But then we had a huge storm and a tree fell on Lara and she was never the same again. Rip.
It takes 4 highly trained men to control a Lara, literally a tank.
They abandoned tank controls for a reason.
No square based exploration game never ever
What about some kind of "Tomb Raider Generations" game that incorporates both gameplay styles?
and what reason? lara's controls were tight and precise as fuck
>I had big plans for it.
Go on.
Too bad Lara's fetish for horses will be her death.
Pic related, it's from the future

take me back
too bad it was made to early for a mod community to grow
>what is TRLE
...
Do those work with nude mod?
The Last Revelation
when those mummies came alive i shit my pants
Probably.
I was going to drill holes in it. But looking back it would have probably cracked or shattered since it was made out of plaster.
gameplaywise the series peaked with anniversary and underworld, I really like the new lara though.
thanks already trying a tr2 level, I didn't know it was a simple as an exe.file
Original Lara:
>intelligent, confident, badass, owns a giant mansion, goes exploring ancient tombs all around the world for the fun and thrill of it
>considered a sexist, negative character
New Lara:
>weak, timid, constantly getting in life-threatening situations, always crying and complaining, hates adventure
>considered a strong female character
kys.
>actually wasted a shotgun shot on the bat henchman
DELETE THIS
I have just started playing Underworld after a fresh playthrough of 1-4 and you are fucking wrong.
The gameplay is UTTER ass compared to the classics.
Movement feels weightless, jumping is done alost automaticly, lots of collision errors and overall floaty controls.
It's really amazing how people claim the older TR games have shitty controls, but the truth is the reboots are inconsistent, unresponsive and imprecise while replacing entire mechanics with automated systems.
Has ANYONE ever played the gbc tomb raider games? I never see them mentioned anywhere.
Why did new Lara threaten to shoot pilot man, and then force him into a storm which resulted in his and her friend's death despite him warning her?
I agree. controls were great in anniversary, but feel off in underworld. I blame the new engine. plattforming is competent overall though and I really like the game for its atmosphere and story.
automated jumping really is the worst thing to happen ever though
worse than qte
I keep trying to play Underworld so I can masturbate to that round ass stuffed into a wetsuit but I keep stopping before I can even finish the first level because something about it just feels really garbage and unfun to play. I didn't get the feeling at all with Legends and Anniversary, although I can't put my finger on what exactly the problem is.
What else would I use the shotgun for?
Okay, I'm gonna break this down.
>intelligent
Feminists would probably find this to be a bad thing. Why? Because they wouldn't be able to identify as an intelligent woman.
>confident
Again, this is problematic. Feminists doesn't have any confidence.
>badass
This is usually criticized for being too "manly" one way or another. It gets a pass in movies, though.
>weak, timid, constantly getting in life-threatening situations, always crying and complaining, hates adventure
One way or another they want it to be more realistic. Original Lara Croft was a total babe, modern Lara Croft? Eh, looks like the random girl I meet in the store all the time. I prefer the original Lara Croft. Sure, she's an escapist character but what's wrong about that? Most male protagonists are escapist characters and I don't mind.
>stand on anything the enemies can't climb onto, like the red ramp thing in or literally anything Lara can't just walk up to
>switch to unlimited ammo gun
>hold "fire button" down as the dumb as shit enemies walk back and forth in and out of your line of sight until they die
>if slightly elevated platform isn't available, hold down fire button + backpedal if enemy is melee or has limited range, or keep rolling in their face as they attempt to do the AI equivalent of a console player turning in an FPS game trying to shoot you
>win
boo fucking hoo no more classic TR games what a fucking loss
I don't like legends either due to its annoying and clunky focus on cinematics and QTEs. anniversary managed to hit all the right buttons for me: focus on plattforming, great atmosphere, little action, tight controls.
I'd suggest to give underwold another try. the atmosphere and story is really worth it. also it's the last tomb raider game before the franchise turned into uncharted.
How to revive this style of puzzle and exploration without relying on flat geometry? Is modern technology and level design at odds with this kind of game play?
No & No.
None of it matters though, Uncharted has set the trend and everyone else just craves to be exactly it.
Uncharted is done though and they'll have to change up things for the 3rd Reboot Raider.
...
that music for the vehicles
youtube.com
Uncharted is done, but that doesn't mean ND doesn't already have a game in development ready to pick up the crown. People are claiming it's TLOU2, but who knows.
Tomb Raider: The Second Reboot series is probably going to either lag behind whatever ND releases next, or it'll be the same old thing we've gotten twice now with minor improvements (ie more hubs, or more crafting).
Essentially though, these games will be pretty much the same. And then we have a game like, yooka laylee which is supposed to be a return to form (true form - not a 3D World type revisit), but it's not what I'm looking for at all in a revival of this genre.
I mean really it feels like there's so much that can be done with this genre but everyone's either going the ultra realistic route, or the ultra childish route.
Legend, Underworld and Anniversary are all good though.
>People are claiming it's TLOU2, but who knows.
It's TLOU2 guaranteed. It's already been semi-confirmed.
That's really disappointing. I really want to see them introduce an entirely new franchise.
>TLOU2
>not that Space Opera Comic that Ellie was reading
Dissapointment.png
The general audience is.
I suppose expected, but I'm still disappointed. Naughty Dog has trouble telling fans and Sony, NO (hence Uncharted post 2), but I kind of at least hoped they would have changed their minds post TLOU and after wrapping up Uncharted.
I'm sure they're also working on another IP, their team is quite large by now.
Tomb Raider was always shit tho. Not saying the new games are great, but it's not like tank-controls lara are anything to fret over lmao.
Seriously, I know that nostalgia is a thing and all, but if you seriously defend tank-controlled platforming then you are out of your fucking mind. It always controlled like shit, even back then. There's a reason everybody moved on.
Did you just implied the series will last till the ongoing "origin story trilogy" will ever end?
user, they are barely making profit on those games, while selling shitload of copies. The timed exclusive bullshit hurt their sales so bad there is even smaller chance for the final entry of the origin trilogy to happen at all. And I will remind you they were seriously considering to boot the franchise after just making TR'13, since it was unprofitable for first two months.
I'm with this franchise since the very start. It's not the first nor even second time it's mishandled by the execs and just raped by bunch of accuntants selling "current trends". Nothing new for me.
Especially since the current reboot is so extensive, it's hardly TR at all, so I wouldn't mind it just dying quickly and get 3rd reboot in next 5 years.
The only thing I really miss at this point is Core-era comics. Those were great. Because if I want to play Core-era game, there are 6 of those and shitload of fan-made mini campaigns. Hell, there is even Underworld for some modern feel in the franchise.
...
"Tank-controls" is a buzzword at this point.
It means absolutely nothing.
user, don't want to break it for you, but Underworld's is the closest you will ever be to Core-era TRs.
Also, Thailand and Mexico (especially the first part of it) are literally epic and the best thing that ever happend in official TR game since Alexandria levels of The Last Revelation.
But true, the tutorial and first level of Underworld (especially Kraken) are really bad.
>video game
>too video gamey
This is a ruse.
The original TR games weren't about the combat.
How is this even a complaint, classic Tomb Raider is the closest videogames ever got to realistic acrobatics. Nothing else valued momentum building and precision like it.
Here is the thing you want so bad from me.
That was just how things were at the time. Poeple can visualize the concept of the design for themselves and, as a result, she becomes a sex symbol.
Tp be fair though, simplistic designs are usually the best and most iconic.
I like the reboot series better than the classics.
I've only played 1 and 2 of the original series though.
>new Lara
You know the reason
Hopefully you don't keep it that way forever.
>Legend
Annoying cinematics and even worse QTEs. Worst of all, constant chatter and the game can be easily finished in 4 hours, with actual timer set for 5.
Still pumped fresh blood into the series.
>Anniversary
Only good if you never played the original. It's not just nostalgia, the levels are simply butchered, theme-park version of the original
>Underworld
Crystal Dynamics best game so far, finally grasping how to do a proper TR. Shaky story, but story never was strong part of this franchise anyway.
However, most of people involved with this game were fired soon after due to low sales. The reminder was fired upon SquareEnix buyout.
Now low-paid interns are the people responsible for TR franchise.
>The original TR games weren't about the combat.
No, oooof coooourse noooot. They were about the platforming. Because it's soooo fun and challenging to platform with tank controls.
I'm still playing the first Tomb Raider in between other games.
Once I reached St Francis Folly, every level since that point has just been fucking golden.
Honestly I would prefer it if the Tomb Raider games had as little combat as possible and focused more on environmental exploration and puzzle solving. Combat should be reserved for bosses and wildlife. Like in the original.
You hate it because it's challenging, so really, what is even your point?
Try The Last Revelation.
No, really, try it. It's the best way to know if you like the series or not.
If it's too old for you (I'm not judging, my friend is incapable of playing the old ones when using keyboard), then try either Anniversary or Underworld (thou if you are planning to even grasp what the fuck Underworld is about, it's better to play other two Crystal Dynamics games first) and see for yourself.
The 2nd reboot is just horrible piece of shit, connected with the franchise by title and name of the main character.
Actually that's a good idea. I think the TR games could be the actual polished "survival" game everyone is looking forward to. I mean, all the ideas are already there, it just needs to be put together.
Too bad, won't happen.
Let's see... precise jumps on exact distance you want to have, with full control of speed, range and dropping?
What else to ask in a platforming game?
But how could you know, if you never played any of Core-era games?
Also, the main selling point of those games was exploration and getting where you shouldn't get, to find some secret. The very thing current reboot lacks.
it's called sarcasm you fucking numbskull
this is the easiest platforming series ever created no thanks to backpedalling literally taking you back the exact distance you need to perform a running jump and most jumps in the games being linear and having no obstacles whatsoever
Ammo is plenty in early Tomb Raider games.
>I never played any of those games
We already noticed that, thanks for continous confirmation.
Also, 2/10, try harder. This user already gave you the right idea for proper bait next time.
we will never have strong and sexy lara ever again
instead we will have to put up with frumpy whiny bitch lara
Streamlining for casuals?
>i have no counterargument so i'm just going to assume you never played the game
>BAIT ECKS DEE
(you)
I just beat Rise of The Tomb Raider. It's better than Uncharted 4 by a mile and the final boss battle is a Helicopter and an Army. No Fucking QTEs an actual honest to god boss battle with a helicopter.
All the upgrades were cool, the zones had a ton of explorable areas. Very well done adventure game.
Not in TR2 and not at this stage. Plus shotgun is perfect later on, against the jade warriors, so why waste it in Venice?
Then again, I know people who played entire TR3, probably the most combat-heavy TR from Core, using nothing else than basic pistols and picking Deagle only against Willard and Tinnos guards.
But those people had to replace their pinky finger after doing so due to extensive joint damage, so I don't recommend that.
>I can't into reading comprehension, so I will pretend there were no arguments
Also, it's you fishing for (you)s, so what the fuck?
Yet another TR thread winds up turning into pure bickering.
>final boss is a helicopter
Realistic settings always suffer from this. I'd much rather have the crazy shit like Flying demons and spider alien things like in old TR as final bosses.
Honestly I never liked Tomb Raider 2 and 3. Lara acted like a sociopath through a lot of the game.
>I never even played previous Crystal Dynamics TRs, not to mention those from Core
Literally the only way anyone could sincerely call Rise good game. It's not even better than TR'13, since it's a rehash of exactly the same game, gameplay and story, but replacing stormy island with snowy Siberia.
The moment they redesigned Lara into her latest form, I dropped the series.
The SJWs won, they ruined the most iconic video game babe in history.
i'm sure your commentary ups the thread quality by quite a lot
>"bwaah classic TR isn't like my Marios"
>"tank control and movement is shit even though the levels are designed around with them in mind"
You must be the same autist that complains about God Hand tank controls
