What do you think makes a good character design?

What do you think makes a good character design?

I personally think that they have to fit within the context of their respective game/setting. I like a lot of the designs in The Witcher 3. Ciri, Yennifer and the Nilfgaardians in particular catch my eye. They don't feel at all "overdone" in anyway, yet some of their designs look really good and pop out (to me anyway)

I think a lot of the Overwatch designs are nice too, also within the context of the game/art design. Also, not sure why, but I always liked the Phoenix Wright characters.

bump

Quality thread OP. Pity it won't get many replies.

I liked Ciri's design too. I think keeping it simple, and adding a few memorable details is what makes a design work. Ciri's eye makeup and startling green eyes are memorable yet simple. Glad they went ahead and made her sexy too.

Use of color, silhouette, the path your eye follows as it focuses, not being too busy.

Really OP character design is a big long topic that couldn't really be covered in a single Sup Forums post.

Agreed
I know it's a broad topic, that's why I made a thread!

The only thing I didn't like about Ciri's design is that she has white hair, I know they tried to defend it by saying Ashen blonde but let's be honest her hair is white.

Because they mostly stuck with the book descriptions except the fact that Yennfer would have curlier hair, Ciri would have grey ashen hair instead of the goddamn white hair she has in-game also her heels are just fucking stupid and Geralt would be less handsome than he was in Witcher 3.

But I agree, they mostly stuck with historical designs that actually existed in our world, that is why I find the nilfgaardian armor to be porn for me, but even though Ciri's "outfit" is impractical for protection for a girl on the run from goddamn plate armor space elves on space horses, it suited the world she was in.

>if you haven't noticed already, I don't know shit about design because I am not an art fag

>straight bangs haircut
>full body pantyhose
>the best boingy bits in the country
>outfit for a sorceress living in the desert
>creeper yandere personality
>is always looking at the MC with that crazy bitch look
>she's definitely into some crazy shit
>like drugging you and then smelling your dick while you sleep

I don't even play whatever game she's from but this pantyhose succubus hits 10/10 of my fetishes.

>What do you think makes a good character design?

The number of belts and zippers.

*teleports behind you

Which book states Geralt isn't pretty yet? I just read Times of Contempt in which two sorcereress' say Geralt is handsome and they wouldn't mind a go at him to which he is thankful he doesn't blush.

pssshhh ... nothin personnell, space elf ...

The sorceresses said that so Yennefer would be able to hear that shit, sorceresses are so bored and petty they just love to piss each other off for fun.

For fuck's sake, Triss met Geralt for the first time by using magic on him to fuck him just to see what the whole fuss was about between him and Yennefer and she was her "best friend".

Goddamn mages.

>western female character design

I think venoms design is tight becuase it's simple soldier dashed with an eye patch, robot arm,2 metal horns and tons of scars. I felt it was a drastic change to what snakes used to be when they just looked like average guys.

I'm glad Hillary Duff stayed pure.

bunda

So what's better? Making a girl look like 10 years old with bulging tits for your anime-loving ass?

I also like him just because I love the way 80s military uniforms look - almost modern, but still traces of that old-world ruggedness remaining. Uniforms today might be better but they're not as aesthetically pleasing.

I'd duff that Hilary.

You know I thought something like that but still I feel for an "ugly" freak he gets way too much pussy like the temple chick in the first short story, dandelions lady bard friend and even shani and triss is basically a horny school girl around him in the books. Non of these are paid to Fuck him, I feel the ugly thing was just patched on to make him not appear like a Gary stu by the writer.

Well... can you link to any favorite guides or articles?

>creeper yandere personality
>like drugging you and then smelling your dick while you sleep

I can see that you have not played Fire Emblem Awakening, Tharja is a very sweet girl but just a bit weird.

I hate the fact that any military who tries to add some style to their military will be associated with fascism.

Witchers are often ugly, but they're also rugged mysterious supermen that are often only around for one night and are std-free thanks to the mutations.

I assume you mean for combat uniforms right? Because some countries still got it

Nothing wrong with that.

That's why police officer riot outfits should be in pink, that way no one can complain about a police state.

Like other user said, they have incredible stamina and they are STD free, not to mention that their skin causes a slight tingling feeling when touched, so their dicks would be like vibrating dildos.

belts

>Cirilla will never teleport behind you and hug you
Life is suffering

Less stupid heels.

So are 30 year old virgin wizards and yet women don't want them.Im just saying that for Geralt it's an oddly not an inconvenience for someone with an avid appetite for the flesh. I hold by what I said it's an artificial flaw.

>30 year old virgin wizards
>rugged mysterious supermen

>Looks like a Mary Sue
>Written like a Mary sue

Pinnacle of storytelling

At least she was a Mary Sue that had a fucked up childhood.

That's really not the point you should be criticising.

Jesus fuck those legs are impeccable.

I like the fact that the Witcher is so down to earth game / world with girls having scars and not just pretty anime faces. I don't really know why she needs heels on her boots, it doesn't look necessary to me since she's walking in all that dirt of Velen and Skellige.

A Mary Sue in only the sense that she gets all these amazing powers and abilities.

She trained most of her childhood at Kaer Morhen with Geralt. Same sort of goes with her powers. Later on she spends a lot of time training.

Do they just not let guys with weak chins join the marines?

>Mary Sue
>raped
>facial scars

I don't think you know what you are talking about you worthless shitstain who neither read the books nor played the videogames.

Barefoot girls are patrician, lad.

I really love Zero's design. When you're an overpowered immortal corpse, you can get away with anything.

to add on, I think they did a good job of making venom look like a tragic character, despite how "cool tough guy" he is, his facial expression and overall design is very frankenstein-y

He's handsom as fuck in this game. Really puts other snakes to shame.

I think the general rule of thumb is that each (important) character should have a certain palate that they can be identified from. Yennefer had black and white, triss had red and white/green (depending on the costume) ciri had white/brown. Or for a better example, look at ghost trick. You could identify every character from 2 or 3 colored lines. They each had their own style of hair, clothes, way of moving (also very important) but you could be nearly blind and still easily recognize every character by their colors.

Functionality and style

Ciri is Mary Sue.

Ask fromsoft and they'll tell you in moonspeak

Storywise a character that has a past and a future, not just someone dropped into the world to be a tool for the player.
Clothing that complinments the characters past with imperfections that make the character feel more real. Anything that would be impractical in reality is a minus, like ciri wearing high heels makes her less credible as a real person in a world.

I remember her got milk ads in my cafeteria growing up. I always wanted her to have my milk.
