Tecnhically if you don't care for an extremely compressed summary then Centralfiction is the only game you need since it has a 30 minutes recap of everything that happened before till then.

If you care about care the characters then you are out of luck, the best you could do is get Continuum Shift Extend that offers a summary of Calamity Trigger then Chronophantasma Extent and finally Centralfiction.

3 games is the minimum if you care for the story, although it is not a bad deal since there were 7 releases of the game series till now due all the updated versions of the same game.

I get what you mean but some scenes that are just dialogue ended up being my favorites. Like when Sol is chilling in Ky's office and the two talk over whiskey (next game better have Sol teaching Ky how to drink). Mostly because of how much changes each character went through in the series but also because it's fun to be reminded that the player has more information about the world and characters than most of the cast. Ky acknowledging that he doesn't know Sol's real name in Xrd Sign for example.

i personally didn't like it. it's one of those cases where knowing too much kinda ruins the mystique of it all. then again, i'm not a fan of Xrd's near complete drop of the rock aesthetics from the old games (except some stages, like bedman)

Yeah, I liked those scenes, Xrd was amazing for Ky in that it really showed the result of his growth. Hard to believe the old boy scout from GG1 grew into this kind of cool man that he is in Xrd.
