Gaming Monitors

What are the important specs and features I should look for in a gaming monitor?

My computer monitor died this weekend so I'm in the market for a new one and with black friday coming up quick I need to get informed.

>wtf is IPS and does it matter for gaming?
>1440p or 21:9 1080p?
>is 120hz a meme?
>Are monitors with built-in speakers a thing yet and are they worth it? (not HDTVs)
>Any neat features or conveniences worth mentioning?
>Was 3d a meme and is it dead?

144hz 1920x1080 minimum.

>21:9

LOL

>is 120hz a meme?

If you play arena shooters no, otherwise yes

IPS is in-plane switching. It basically means that viewing angles are improved over the average TN panel and color accuracy tends to be much higher. I personally hate TN panels and can't buy anything other than an IPS.

I would say go 1440p

Above 60hz is nice for response time, and you can see the difference. However, any significant improvements are placebo. Also if you get a Gsync or freesync monitor it helps to have as high of a refresh rate buffer as possible.

No monitors speakers are worth it.

Gsync and freesync, it makes playing games on mid-high range graphics cards like the RX 480 much nicer.

3D is a meme and dead

pic related iis my monitor at home, it's a 1440hz 1440p IPS monitor from Acer. Does me wonders

1080@144 hz tn panel min for shooters. If you don't play fast shooters than get 1440 ips panel. Don't get speakers. The sound quality is shit. Get external speakers if you really want them or just headphones. Don't bother with 3D. Freesync or gsync are nice features depending on your card and if it can run it.

>Above 60hz is nice for response time, and you can see the difference. However, any significant improvements are placebo
The most comfortable thing about my 144hz meme monitor is how smooth the mouse feels for regular ass browsing the internet and shit

144hz @1080p or 1440p everything else is a meme and not viable in this day and age

1440p 144hz is the best you can get currently. In the future it will be all about 21:9 but they're too expensive right now.

How many years do you think it will take before 4K 60fps becomes the norm?

>is 120hz a meme?
No, it's probably the most noticeable upgrade you can get for a few bucks.
It only works as long as your rig can pull 120 fps consistently on all games though.

4 console generations

>>wtf is IPS and does it matter for gaming?
Type of display panel, affects colour accuracy and viewing angles, the better one on the market right now.
p or 21:9 1080p?
What video card do you have? I have a 970 and a 144hz 1080p (Asus VG248QE) monitor and I can get all my games to benefit from it no problem. If you have a 1080 I'm sure you'd be fine with a 3440x1440 100hz+ monitor, if you have the money for it.
>>is 120hz a meme?
Absolutely not, the only bad thing is that you will get spoiled and it will sometimes seem like 60fps isn't smooth enough. All games will benefit from it in one way or another, even if it's just smoother looking animations
>>Are monitors with built-in speakers a thing yet and are they worth it? (not HDTVs)
Yes, my monitor has 2 watt stereo speakers, they are not that great but can be convenient if you ever need it.
>>Any neat features or conveniences worth mentioning?
My monitor is on a swivel and the angles can be adjusted. Apparently not every 100hz+ monitors have this, my buddy's Acer 144hz monitor is literally just a stand, no swivel or angle adjustment.
>>Was 3d a meme and is it dead?
Yes, some 100hz+ monitors support it though, so once again also convenient to have if it ever comes up.

>wtf is IPS and does it matter for gaming?
It doesn't
>1440p or 21:9 1080p?
Depends on what build your PC can put out
>is 120hz a meme?
Yep
>Are monitors with built-in speakers a thing yet and are they worth it? (not HDTVs)
Yes they're a thing. Very few are worth it
>Any neat features or conveniences worth mentioning?
144hz, IPS for a super glossy aesthetic display(not necessary at all though)
>Was 3d a meme and is it dead?
Yes and no. There's like 2 people who still use it.

I hope never. I got a 4k60hz 40 inch monitor and after playing with a 1080p 120hz monitor I wish I would have gotten a 1440p 144hz monitor instead. Shit is like cheating in FPS.

You want IPS. I've gone from a good monitor with it to a backup monitor that doesn't and the inconsistency in light is just FUC:LK#$J)_Q@*#R$%U annoying.

Tfw 16:10 1920x1200 60hz comfiness

Nice Trips.

Guess I should share whats in my rig... I just built it this year so I have a 1070, i7 (4790 I think? It was the popular one)

>What are the important specs and features I should look for in a gaming monitor?
At least 1080p.
Good color.
1ms response time and

Its not a meme at any point. Every game feels and looks so much better at higher framerates. Heck, just locking some games to around 80fps and then comparing it to 60fps makes 60 feel choppy as fuck. even in 3rd person games.

Also G-sync/Freesync is something any 144hz monitor user should get. Screentear is a bitch.

This.
I'm using a 75Hz because this monitor happens to support it, and even that is a clear improvement over 60 with shooters.

Join me in 3440x1440 100hz master race, friend. It is a nice place to be.
