Silent Hill 2

Fuck, I love this game, but I need more shit just as psychological and symbolic as this game whether it's a game or a movie.

Also SH thread

Nothing's going to hit that symbolic/psychological note as nice as silent hill 2 did user.
No other vidya ever will.
It was one of the best rides around.

The only thing these game have in common is the "symbolic" aspect and the unnerving atmosphere, but OFF is something that really stuck out to me.

(Here's a copypasta as well)

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" is a all-in-one fix, that works as a no-cd crack as well. It is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW fix mentioned in the guide, you can use the sh2proxy's EXE as the no-cd crack!

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

SH2-4 do not support Xinput gamepads. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.

play downpour, it's just as good as sh2
all the games after the room are copying the second game actually, and all of the turned out great..
>based hulett

Post your favorite Silent Hill monsters.

...

SH4 came close, but it didn't receive the full love and care that SH2 did. It was rushed out the door before it could be completed.

This guy knows the pain

This game hits an emotion in me I haven't felt in any other game. I just hope Hideo Kojima's upcoming game does everything I hope.

>I just hope Hideo Kojima's upcoming game does everything I hope.
It's an open world, co-op third person shooter. If The Phantom Pain taught me anything, don't trust Koji to hit you in "the feels".

>late night Silent Hill threads

The last haven of nu-Sup Forums.

So is it generally accepted that Heather is a slut? Because my head canon is

>at the start of the game she's already pregnant with some random guy's baby which becomes the vessel for the new god
>by using the aglophotis at the end of the game she essentially instigates a natural abortion (not this vomiting shit)

Kind of goes without saying that all this would have been far too much to portray in a video game. As a side note, Heather's pains during some of the Otherworld transitions could be interpreted as her body trying to naturally reject God or simply it beginning to react with the outside world, the possibilities there are numerous so I've never come to a solid conclusion.

All that said Heather is still my waifu.

Ah shit, I haven't been keeping up to date with it. But... You've got to be shitting me...

Shattered Memories.

You forgot the other half.

here's the recommended emulator settings for SH1. Works great on all other games too.

The plugins used are:
-Pete's OpenGL 1.78; (more options & better performance than 2.x version)
-Eternal's SPU Engine.

alternatively just use a software renderer for very 1:1 PS1-like graphics, including 240p only.
...OR just buy the game from PSN Store for few bucks.

You could also try the new PGXP emulator, that adds Perspective Correction to PS1 textures.

I always found the Lying Figure to be incredibly unsettling.

It's not quite as flashy a design, but the way it moves in the first cut-scene, like it's trapped in a strait jacket made out of its own skin? It's a perfect embodiment for so many of the themes of the game.

>So is it generally accepted that Heather is a slut?
No, there isn't a solid conclusion about the pregnancy. I always read it as a "virginal birth", going along with the bastardized Catholicism-undertone throughout the cult in this game. Though it is possible that it's the case: Would need to see some evidence.

>201X
>still using any plugin based psx emulator
>not using mednafen beetle psx core (in libretro)
>being this retarded
how is this shit still possible with mednafen around, for fucks sake nigger

Underrated.

>playing any "silent hill" after the original series

Shattered Memories is the only one I'd say is worth it. It's a very interesting kind of sequel, to say the least.

SH3 and Room were utter trash.

No,origins is the only one that should be played, only because it remains very close to the original source material.

So much for being a spiritual successor to PT.

Ah well, still might see something interesting come about from it.

>SH3
>trash
fucking newfags.

SH2 = SH:SM > SH1 = SH0 > shit > Room > poop > SH3 = HC

Origins treads too much on the original lore, and feels like lazy SH2 rehash at times. The way melee combat was handled in the game is also an issue.
Don't fall for it.

So which ending seems to be the best in SH 2?
I figured it would be the Leave ending because he's able to move on with his life instead of just killing himself. And the Maria ending would just neglect everything that James was supposed to learn for himself and just repeat what happened to Mary.

How so?

Like I said, this is simply my interpretation of it. And although the Virginal Messiah thing may have originated from Christianity there aren't a whole lot of references to Catholicism.

One thing I applaud Shattered Memories for is exploring paranoia and confusion in a way that didn't make all the side-characters into mental cases.

Every other Silent Hill helps establish an atmosphere of unease and mistrust by making most of the people you meet act in increasingly unstable ways. While Shattered Memories starts that way, but you slowly realize that everyone else is actually pretty normal, but you're the one who's probably lost their mind.

where the hell is the right pic from?

Thanks for posting these, familia!
However, there's a newer version of that guide already, with links to some fancy, new fog-fixes and shit.

Oh look, mednafag shitting up things as always.

PGXP > all PS1 emus.

some claim these are from some Shattered Memories VN, which I've never heard of. Might be fan-made.

Reminder that there will never be a good psychological horror game ever again.

Enjoy playing SH forever.

In Water.
Goodie goodie ends do not fit the game's style and message.

sm visual novel

Whoever is STILL updating guides to fix these decades old games is a saint and scholar

It's between Leaven and In Water for me. Both are emotional resolutions that tie into the theme, but I'm partial to the Leave ending. It's the only one that ties up Laura's arc as well, and makes it so James, Eddie, and Angela all found a different solution to their personal demons. Self-destruction, the destruction of others, and forgiveness.

The Maria ending is just James indulging his delusion long enough for Maria to get sick and start the cycle of loss again.

>Someone updated this again.
>Even better and more organized than last time.
Bless their little soul.

>Shattered Memories VN
Is it JP only? I've been wanting to replay it but then I remember the Otherworld segments. That and I don't feel like setting up my PS2 just for a walking/running simulator

I actually found the Leave ending to be the worst one, from a character POV, simply because it was too clean. I've always been of two minds on SH2 having multiple endings, but Leave feels too happy to be the conclusion to James' arc. To quickly summarize my position, Silent Hill 2, and the character arc of James Sunderland in particular, is the kind of story where a "happy" ending feels insincere. The way James was portrayed by the very end was a pathetic man who couldn't own up to his own actions, and it's left ambiguous whether or not James actually mercy killed Mary or if it was out of spite. In short, James is a man who either refused to move on, and only did so after incredible strife from what was essentially a third part, being the town of Silent Hill itself. The three other endings, "In Water, "Maria", and "Rebirth", fit this to a tee: He either accepts his crimes and gives himself the punishment he (arguably) deserves, lives in his own delusions rather than living with the hard truth, or tries to amend it in his own disturbed way.
The way the cult is portrayed, especially the church section, has a Catholic vibe.
Saved, I'll spread this as much as I can.

yer welcome

the PS2 port of SM sucks ass.
Play the Wii original.

>otherworld sections
you literally run thru' them in couple minutes usually, fortunately.

>the PS2 port of SM sucks ass.
>Play the Wii original.

I tried to emulate it a while back but I had trouble with some of the environment textures, it was borderline unplayable

Dolphin's made some large improvements in the last couple of years

Angela did nothing wrong.

No one's claimed she did, I don't think?

She did.

What?

Russian initially. Zackcat translated it to the English.
This game is SM sequel.

alchemillahospital.net/shattered-memories-fanmade-visual-novel/

no wonder it looks like something made with Source film maker

>The way the cult is portrayed, especially the church section, has a Catholic vibe.

I know, but Christianity itself borrows a lot from pagan beliefs, so it becomes a question of who influenced whom. I'm trying not to implicate too much from my own understandings of the series but I would think a religion that precedes a pale imitator of itself would hold more truth than a pale imitator

She stabbed her father to death in anger because of all the abuse he's done to her and I believe she also killed her brother.

So again, nothing wrong.

I know that. Her father molested her, and it's implied her brother did as well.

And by the end, you realize you're normal, and they're normal.

It's the whole world that's gone insane. And there's a reason for that.

OK anons, what's your favorite ufo ENDING?

I think they're all great in their own respect, but Shattered Memories is great on so many levels.

I regret that the 'SH4 UFO ending' is fake, because Harry vs. James in polo on numb bodies is fucking amazing

No, no, I meant that Angela was the one who always insisted that she did something wrong.

Despite the fact that she was clearly the victim.

Well yeah, all she did was shout at James about him abandoning Mary for another woman and, also kill herself.

I'm tagging this thread so I can read it tomorrow morning.

Tag.

Oh, well you're right there. What a great fucking character.

>SM sequel
Any good?

SH3 is always a highlight, considering they blow up the town itself.

We're talking outside the scope of the game though. I don't recall anything about her killing her brother but killing her father in retribution for years of sexual abuse seems entirely justified.

>we will never get a silent hill 2 spin off where we get to play as Angela and experience her version of the town
Why did Konami have to ruin everything I love?

Oh, then nevermind, you're right in why she acted like that even though she had an abusive father/brother.

I don't think I noticed it on my first playthrough, but I love how some of the characters and their issues clearly parallel the issues that Cheryl is trying to overcome in relation to her father.

Like Michelle dealing with the fact that she loved the idea of someone, instead of loving the actual person, as she desperately tried to maintain things with her boyfriend after the relationship had already faded long ago.

>I don't recall anything about her killing her brother
It's heavily implied, but never explicitly stated.
That's what Born From a Wish should have been, to be frank.
She said he probably didn't love her anyway, and she's probably right, to some degree

Or how characters break the fourth wall explicitly, trying to keep the delusion going. There's some good shit in SM.

This.
Most other games just try to copy what SH2 did, but without going through the same thought process the dev team went through.
They there are the games that just copy the aesthetics.

This is when media blackout comes to bite me in the ass.
So much for that game being good.

Her disdain for her brother was based on him sexually abusing her as well, but that's explained in the novel rather than the game.

youtube.com/watch?v=4F86cYaCGyw

>and she's probably right, to some degree

I think that regardless of the ending, it'd be hard to say that James never genuinely loved Mary at some point of their relationship.

Though I also say, that regardless of the ending, it'd be hard to say that there also wasn't some form of resentment or desire to see the situation finally end.

I'll take your word for it, it's just been a while since I've played 2. But in that case she still did nothing wrong.

I love them all equally, but the punchline of the UFO endings always builds on the previous games so it's hard to beat. SH2 and SM are tied for me

By no means was I implying he never did, but it was clear that some resentment was there at the end. Whether or not it was towards Mary's situation, her herself, and how long he held it is up to the individual.

SH3 because town gets destroyed, Harry lives, and pic related.

Faggots made my fear of things being under my bed resurface.

>That's what Born From a Wish should have been
I'm not a huge fan of Born From a Wish honestly. The idea of Maria being tragic in her own right is an interesting idea, after all, she's born from a very dark part of a depressive and grieving man. But I could never get past the idea of her being consciously separate from the dark power behind the town.

The way she appears everywhere, knowing things she shouldn't while tormenting James with her constant and unavoidable deaths? It feels weird to me that she would just wake up in Silent Hill and be just as confused as everyone else there.

SH is one of those games I really regret not experiencing as a kid, because I know now it would have fucked me up something fierce.
But in a good way.

SH3's was great, with Harry being the angry overprotective father.

James's cameo in SM made me chuckle though.

I agree: Maria is an element of the town, manifested from James' own mind. Giving her an individual personality and adventure involving ghosts was pretty silly.

Admittedly, I do like how they portrayed her as being childish at the beginning of the scenario.

The "I Knew It!" in Homecoming's made me chuckle.

I hated how I got it on my first playthrough entirely by mistake.

Can't judge, I'm an author.

Part of me would have loved to see more of Silent Hill from Angela and maybe even Eddie's perspectives. But it might lessen the impact of how we just got a glimpse of their worlds right before their deaths.

The bleeding heart in me liked to think that the ambiguity of Angela's ending granted some small chance of her someday moving on from everything though. Even though her suicide is all but guaranteed.

Hah, I didn't know it was even available on the first run.

I got the, "you were being electro-shocked in the hospital the whole time" ending. Wasn't much more satisfying.

Yeah, If you forgive the mom but don't forgive the Dad, you get the UFO ending. Man, fuck Homecoming.

You made it?

I'm intrigued.

Kek What bizarre requisites.

I forgave the Dad and thought I could somehow save the mother without shooting her. I guess the ending requirements didn't make much sense outside of the completely good and bad endings.

It kind of felt like they were trying to expand on what they did with Lisa in the first game. Being someone who didn't realize they were part of the town.

But it doesn't fit Maria's character as well. Plus, the themes shifted from a cult/demonic manifestations story to personal psychological story in-between the first and second games.

I'd have to go for the Closer. Only monster in the series that actually unnerves me. It also is the first monster Heather encounters after her dream with it fitting the theme of impregnation.

It's 1.5 hours long, you can try it.

Might hold off until morning, but I'll be sure to check it out.

Still working on it, or is it finished?

My theory is that much of the world was under the influence of Old Gods, however, their power has greatly diminished. Only a few spots like Silent Hill they still have power. They feed off of emotions and can project them into reality.

She starts as a blank slate at first. But she slowly gets more of Mary's memories, and becomes more of what James desires. But that means she becomes more obsessive.

Also note that she seems to get nuttier each time she's revived.

Finished, but english version still in alpha. It's playable anyway.

Give The Void or Pathologic a shot.
