They readjusted their business model after Gen 2 and 3 failed to regain the popularity of one as the fad died down. They invest less in marketing and make more actual profit. It's still a pretty impressive amount of sales though.

Gyms and gym leaders have been replaced by trials and trial captains, but for the most part, it's the same damn thing.

The real question is what starter are you going for? I kinda wanna go for Litten, because the muscle cat wrestler thing it turns into is hilarious to me. On the other hand, it's the same fucking pattern of evolution that all other fire types have evolved into recently.

Gyms are gone but are replaced with trials, which are basically quests you do for a trial captain which culminates in getting to battle a totem Pokemon which is a buffed up version of a regular Pokemon except they're actually really fucking tough, which is surprising after how easy Gen 6 was. There's 7 trials spread across 4 islands, and when you do all the trials on an island you can fight the kahuna who is the strongest trainer on the island and if you win you go to the next island to do more trials. Once you've beaten all 7 trials and all 4 kahunas you get invited to the opening of the Pokemon League (the region in SM has never had a League before) where the kahunas have been elected as the elite four and you fight through them to become the first champion only for a repeat of Gen 1 but instead of your rival it's the professor. Beat him and you become the champion and every time you rematch the elite four after that you fight a different character with a different team who is challenging you for the title, including some of the trial captains and kahunas and even the Team Skull leaders.

It's half dark, not half fighting.

Hell, look at its signature moves. A spinning lariat and a body slam. Those look like fighting moves. Those ARE fighting moves, even if they might not be fighting type moves.

But Pokemon isn't Nintendo's IP and they had literally nothing to do with GO. They just have a big part of shares, but not significant enough for them calling Pokemon their own IP.

PWT has no trainers and those characters always have the same teams though.

The time of the Mewtwo movie was the golden age of the franchise and it will never regain that status nowadays, only on the basis that there's just so much children shit thrown around in so many channels plus children shit is directly competing with minecraft and FNAF let's plays, which is sadly raking in more profit and view time than anything else.

That being said, Pokemon progressively got more disappointing since after gen 2 which was the only valid improvement from one gen to another. They have been playing it extremely safe ever since.

Now in gen 6 and 7 the games are actively inferior to the previous ones because some things like difficulty, level design, postgame and progression are down the shitter.

So my point is that while they don't deserve to get back to their golden era height, they wouldn't manage to even if GF learned how to design games with an incredible miracle.

They have been improving at a similar rate Disgaea games are improving, the one difference being that Pokemon sells several million copies and Disgaea is a niche serie from a poor niche company that sells 200k, plus merchandise of any kind.

They really need to pour at least 1% of the profits back into the games so the new versions don't feel like DLC, that should help.

There's no fucking difference between the two outside the PWT having characters you know.

Gym battles are replaced by Totem Pokemon, which are powerful pokemon who get an increase in stats and who summon ally Pokemon to perform combinations with. They also all hold items (for example Totem Lurantis holds a Power Herb so that it can use a one-turn Solar Blade). Also once you begin a trial you can't leave until you finish, unlike Gyms where you can just leave whenever.

After completing all of the trials of an island then you'll face the island's Kahuna in a battle, and they all have pretty good teams for the points in the game where you fight them. They'll also all throw Z-moves at you.

Eventually in the story the Elite 4 is formed from two Kahunas, one Trial Captain (since the Kahuna of that particular island is a lazy asshole) and one new character, and the "champion" fight is against Kukui, although you become Alola's first-ever champion.

If you're in North America, Midnight EST.

Those are the only things that make a trainer different.
