H5 proves that Cortana has not "cured" rampancy, only stabilized it, and shows that the Forerunner process toward AIs is fundamentally flawed.
Notice how every Forerunner AI is psychotic in some measure, and each one descends to rampancy.

Cortana was coded from DNA but most likely wasn't initialized as an infant. Halsey programmed her to start off as an adult with military expertise, and her base programming was probably meant to support the original purpose of the Spartan program, ie. "Behave or we'll fuck up your planet". The Covenant war forced Halsey to alter the programming to let Cortana assist with the war effort instead of helping with imperial peacekeeping.

Rampancy probably split off those different motivations to separate processes, and what the chief meets in Halo5 is the original Cortana base program, trying to do what Spartans were originally meant to do. Peace by any means necessary. Chief's friendly Cortana might be really dead, or just lost in the forerunner domain. Maybe the authoritarian Cortana locked her up.

It's also possible that the Gravemind gave her a Logic-Virus when she was stranded on High Charity with it for 30 something days. Here's hoping there are Flood on that Halo she has now so Prometheans can fuck back off.

You do know that Bungie had mulled over a villain turn in Halo: CE for Cortana, right?
They admitted as much in a dev commentary playthru of Halo 2. They decided not to because it was "too generic", but I do think that after the trilogy, it was something that could work.
Like I said, every Forerunner AI construct went rampant, with no exceptions, save the new one (don't care about it's name), and that is because it's supposed to be the spunky, air-headed Cortana replacement.

It turned Mendicant Bias on the Forerunners in a couple days iirc. By the time the Gravemind had Cortana, it had absorbed so goddamn many Marines. It's incredibly possible it was able to worm its way into Cortana's mind. That's kind of it's whole deal.

This Cortana is a fragment of the Cortana that sacrificed herself for Chief at the end of Halo 4. Cortana is probably "dead". This version is all that remains.

It's not caused by running out of space. It's kind of vaguely explained, but IIRC the longer an AI exists, the more it learns and the more complex its mental structure becomes. Over time, they tend to develop unstable feedback loops that make them unpredictable and highly emotional, usually climaxing in a typically violent existential crisis.

Rampancy can be accelerated by various factors like stress, over- and under-stimulation, exposure to certain kinds of information, etc.

Rampant AIs have the potential to become "metastable" when they become able to control their rampancy (but definitely not cured of it). This theoretically chills them out a bit, but I'd argue that metastable ones are potentially more dangerous.

An AI's thoughts will begin spiraling out if control, going crazy for awhile before shutting down. This is often due to the logic resources being used up, which is usually timed to be about 7 years. At that point rampancy begins and the AI's sanity begins slipping.

They effectively think themselves into insanity and death.

Some things can be done to offset this, such as attaching to mainframes for supporting logic resources and removal of old memory, however the only thing that can permanently stave it off is Promethean tech, which Ramp-Cortana has apparently found and is using for any AI who join her.

Or so she says. Considering the way she's acting for the entirety of H5, I'm inclined to disagree that she's cured anything. Just stabilized it, if that.

I don't think it should be real Cortana because it would nullify one of the very few good things of Halo4, which was the ending.

More sentient than humans, in my opinion. We can't directly manipulate our own neural network like a metastable AI can.

The current metastable Cortana had hopes that Chief and the other Spartans of Blue Team would agree with her, but she also knew that it was very likely that they wouldn't. So she lured them in to take one last shot at convincing them, but had a backup plan in hand in case she needed to confine them to a Cryptum.

Thay's the key, is if it's actually Cortana or not.

The most likely theory is that Cortana axtually did die in 4, and the Promethean tech 'revived' her in 5, however it made her into a Forerunner AI with just hints of her old self.

Oly Oly Oxen Free was the 'All Clear' signal Spartans would use in training and later for extraction.

The humming is Halsey's favorite song. If you pay attention, it's actually playing in the background of the opening scene when Halsey is talking to Cortana. It's meant to further show how Cortana is losing her sense of self and basically just becoming, or trying to become, Halsey. Since one way for AI's to become rampant is dealing with the reality that no matter what they do they will never truly be human. Never truly be alive.

The Ring is basically nuclear deterrence in that universe. At least that's how I see it. "I have the Mantle now and you're going to listen to me because if you don't, I'll reset the biological universe since my fellow created will be fine." Unless she DOES have a Logic-Virus, in which case she may be planning to unleash Flood, since all Halo Rings were also containment and research stations specifically for Forerunners to learn about Flood in an attempt to stop them without having to resort to wiping the known universe.

I love how in Halo 3 Cortana is all "I have defied God and Demons" and you know, talking in a cryptic vaguely schizoid way that a deteriorating AI would, and in Halo 4 she "gets slightly mad" and then straight up tells you "chief I'm going crazy" in the most boring expository way possible.
