Exposure due to pres from succesful kickstarter and e-celebs

Pixel art that actually serves as an aesthetic and is quality.

Solid gameplay and music

Available on alot of platforms

It's fun, the artstyle is good and has that old school vibe many try to achieve but few actually do, and the OST is great.

bump

He didn't. Shovel Knight is the same "tries hard to be retro but completely misses the mark" platformer like every other game in its cloth.

The only difference is that Shovel Knight's spritework and music are better than your typical "retro-throwback" game.

Opinion discarded, it did it's work ok

It understood what made 8-bit platformers fun beyond le pixel graphics.

He made a not shit game.

Nah, it didn't.

Yes it did you underage twat.

>Here are these things that I think.
>I will not actually clarify these points, just assume that I am correct in all ways, please.
>Please.
>pls

Shovel Knight is the only one that legitimately feels like you're playing retro game while still being modern

He did though, regardless of how you feel about him, he resonated with a larger audience than the typical retro throwback game. I was asking why he did.

>I was asking why he did.
And I told you. His spritework and music are better than your typical retro throwback game, but it's still a bad retro throwback game.

>that last one

Too true. You can get Shovel Knight on your electric toothbrush

Explain how it misses the mark.

Also I adore the game but the music isn't all that great, honestly. Overusage of that trumpet instrument or whatever it is.

Actually a good game with pixel art thats actually good and not just en excuse to be lazy.

I bought a SNES, a Genesis and a CRT a few months ago and i've been playing classic platformers, shooters and RPGs every evening. Why do i get bored out of my wits when i try playing Shovel Knight in about 15 minutes? It's fucking slow and annoying.

He had a shovel and hope. A potent combo.

Also the game is really good.

It focused on fun gameplay over trying to be something.

>underage
In all likelihood I'm older than you are, since I'm old enough to have played the NES games that Shovel Knight is trying to emulate when they originally came out.

Like every other "retro throwback" game, it emulates the look of games of the era but does not emulate the DESIGN of the era. All of these retro throwback games are designed through a modern video game filter that completely fail to understand that the NES games were designed within physical hardware limitations and oozed experimentation due to having very little in terms of prior video games to draw from.

NES games come from an era resembling the Wild West, where the games are wild and untamed, full of rough edges. Many of those rough edges are hardware-enforced, some are not. Those edges give games character and charm. Shovel Knight is polished to a sheen, it has no edges. It is captured and tamed. Compare Shovel Knight to Mega Man 2 or 3. Compare Mega Man 9 and 10 to 2 and 3. MM9 and 10 were developed by a company trying hard to recreate the games of a bygone era, but they failed due to completely misunderstanding the design conventions and limitations of said era. They looked at old games and saw the superficiality of spikes and pits without realizing that those spikes and pits needed to be thoughtfully placed and that enemies needed to be thoughtfully placed as well.

Also, I didn't say the music was good, just that it was better than your typical "retro throwback" fare.

It's a good game. No bullshit, just platforming, nicely done pixel art and minimal story.

This is the vaguest post in the fucking world

You have no real complaints other than "uhhh it's not like muh old games because I said so"

So it's not good because it's good?

Wasn't Shovel Knight made by veterans from WayForward?
Also to add to what others said, the reason the mechanics work so well is because the level design is stellar.

Someone made a youtube vid covering the subtle intricacies of the airship stage level design.

Post it or else

didn't use memes

p-pls don't hurt me

Do you want the video? He put it better than I really could.

sure

Here's how I know you're bullshitting.

gamasutra.com/blogs/DavidDAngelo/20140625/219383/Breaking_the_NES_for_Shovel_Knight.php

by being a good game with no bullshit

Nigga, MM9 has better level design and enemy placement than the NES games. Every enemy feels like a puzzle of it's own.

It was able to balance nostalgia pandering with good modern choice in game design and reminded everyone of their favorite things about Castlevania, Megaman, Metroid etc.
Also has the actual best ship in years.

Plague Knight becomes 1000x cuter if I imagine that his 'mask' is his actual face thanks to him fucking with alchemy so much(it would also explain how he drinks with it somehow)

also idea of using potions to turn Mona into a dickgirl and Plague Knight into a cuntboy for terrible things is super good stuff

Fun game with a free dlc campaign that is as fun if not more fun that the original game.

I'm happy with them just they way they are.

Mona's green skin is hot enough.

Your article is proving my point that Shovel Knight is a modern video game desperately trying to look and feel old but failing. It shows a lack of understanding.

The incessant mid-stage minibosses that bring the levels to a screeching halt and the entirety of Plug Man's stage vehemently disagree.
