Is Justin Wong really amazing at fighting games, or did he just used to play against shitters. How come he wasn't in any of the last EVO top 8, let alone finals.
Is Justin Wong really amazing at fighting games, or did he just used to play against shitters...
He was in top 8 for UMVC last evo.
justin is a good player because he has strong fundamentals but doesn't practice game tech as much as other people do, which is why he gets outpaced by others
He used to be good (Moment 37 from EVO 2004 actually ended with Justin winning, the video was just the first game), but eventually he shifted from SF to MVC as his focus.
They didn't call it the Wong Factor for nothing.
Basically this, with the added refusal to play other characters.
He started SFV as by far the best American, and a top 5 international player. He's now been replaced as America's best, and is severely outclassed internationally.
His Karin is fucking ugly, he never uses the jump back OS, and he refuses to learn a counter for Chun. That matchup is about 6-4 for Chun, but the way he plays it, it's more like 8-2.
Justin is grandfathered in to being really good and skilled. During MvC2 he was legitimately unbeatable for years but now a lot of people have caught up due to playing getting much easier. He's still very strong and cream of the crop but now fighting games is a world stage and not just a east coast vs west coast one.
LET'S GO JUSTIN

I mean who are you trying to fool?
who was in the wong here?
Lets not forget SFV is also such a pathetically shallow SF game that there are less variables to master and dumb shits can close the gap more often.
When people like Anbu Punk get top 8 at tournaments something is very very wrong. Dude was dogshit in USF4 and played nothing else before that. His play style was netplay as hell but SFV abides by that.
Oh so you're diamond I'm guessing?
This. They might as well replace SFV with Rock Paper Scissors and you'll still get the same amount of depth.
story?
After Chris G won evo, this guy waltzed on stage, plugged in his remote and wanted to try and play him.
I bet you could do better amirite?
The ghost of Marvel 2, iirc
The true final boss of MvC3
Chris G makes it through the microwave hallway and finally wins MVC3 at EVO.
This nigga crashes the stage and tells him it's not over yet.
Wong for not accepting the challenge. Those are the rules, man.
...
too busy with his new gf.
Idk man he's a frequent top placer and has been for years, are you really gonna call him a shitter
He's okay.
He really shines on a streak, under pressure he tends to do decently.
>Is Justin Wong really amazing at fighting games
He is, he simply has no tech, which is why he is always a world class player during the early months of a game's life and quickly gets outshined as the game REQUIRES you to have tech.
context as to why security is "escorting" that young colored individual off the stage?
was this guy trying to Akuma him or some shit?
dumbass nigga
chris g demanded that he not be forced to share the stage with "those damn blacks"
>NOW FIGHT A NEW RIVAL
Tech?
Like gear?
Tech is short for "technique". That's basically shit like option-selects, tricky mixups, etc.
Technology, as in in-depth knowledge of the game's situations and exploits, like said.
Oh Justin's good at stuff.
He knows how to do kara's and all sorts of metagame. I think on a winning streak, there are very few players that come close to making him sweat. Not like Daigo who will take a streak and lose it over a small guess. Or even, MOV who wins decisive matches, and takes no win streaks.
esports.yahoo.com
everytime I think of Justin Wong I play this song:
Post them.
oonga boonga this is rock stop
There are no kara grabs in SFV. Justin is lazy. He doesn't learn tech (still not using jump back OS), doesn't learn new characters, and he pretty much never plays optimal.
He's a legit god at marvel 2 and 3. i think he did well in other fighters because he was decent at a time when the overall american fgc skill lvl was really low
Kek
>There are no kara grabs in SFV.
TECHNICALLY, there are. Ibuki actually has one using her st.HK.
youtube.com
Switch Rashid with Balrog and I think this is spot on.
>He knows how to do kara's and all sorts of metagame
the true mark of a top player desu.
you can always tell that saucy knows what he's talking about

Is there any player better than Mike Ross?
Is Urien all that difficult to use? I enjoy him mostly because he's so easy. Sure his Aegis combos take a little more to complete but it's not like he's got insane damage or anything like that.
Laura and Zangief are being slept on, like every command grab character in SF, one day you guys will realize this, I am still dumbfounded at how accepting of a "low tier character" with a full on vortex on wake up that fucks shit up, it's like calling DJin low tier because it takes a good player to get results.
I wouldn't put Juri that low, simply because she has a 3framer and an invincible reversal -even if EX- while Bison is fucked in the defense department.
Mika goes above Nash every day of the week.
I strongly believe Urine is better than Karin, since he has equal if not better footsies and a far superior v-trigger and, to top it all of, he can convert from his CC st.fierce like no other character because of his mac sped dash.
>(still not using jump back OS),
As someone who doesn't use it himself, I can understand where he is coming from, they said they would take away option selects, so it makes sense that they would take the jump OS away, making people who rely on it take a severe hit.
Brace yourselves for the strong/tech OS that was found basically at launch that nobody uses "because it's too difficult to do" to become the new tournament standard.
How the fuck is Ibuki "OONGA" if she doesn't even have any damage output?
That's right, in order to be allowed to criticize something, you have to be number 1 beforehand.
Didn't like star wars 8? Well that's too bad, you haven't made a movie thats made more money or gotten higher reviews so you aren't allowed to criticize.
Didn't like the harry potter series? Unless you've written a series with more books and gotten more acclaim then you need to shut the fuck up
Her stupid command dash enables oonga boongas. Have you not run up to Ibukis that wouldn't stop doing it regardless of getting jabbed out?
>learn a counter for Chun
There are no counters to Chun, her worst matchup is 5-5
hey man be careful about what you say about laura.
She can meme you up real bad.
Doesn't help that the dude that keeps winning at my locals is none other than Mr Crimson and his laura is god tier.
Excuse me, you are posting with MY name
That Ibuki is probably me, I'm trash with her ;-;
Have you played an online Ibuki?
All they do is press buttons
>the dude that keeps winning at my locals is none other than Mr Crimson
PARIS

Isnt Crimson a Sim main now?
Justin, is that you?!
>most basic character in the game
>will be hard reads to win forever
>gets raped harder and harder by every new zoner release
>being slept on
Stop acting like Gief has the potential to be this games Gen. Hes not remotely as hard to play, pros spent time on Gief, and theres just nothing to find with such a basic, slow character.
it's actually Lyon.
He plays both. I'm pretty sure he was playing ryu earlier today too.
um..
lol?
>outfootsie mister Russian bear
>make 1 (ONE) (UN) mistake
>get meme'd to death
Again, you just need to be a good player, specially in terms of reads. You can make tons of mistakes throughout the whole match, then hit your opponent once into the scariest vortex in the game.
DJin wasn't the best example, I should have said kazuya, since DJin is actually Chun.
Help me, Sup Forums.
Fuck, forgot the link.
strawpoll.me
More like
>make one mistake (doesnt happen to real pros, let alone four times in a bo3)
>get the right read every single time
>if not, back to square one
Again, nothing to sleep on here. Capcom is currently fulfilling the wet dreams of zoner scrubs, and they hate grapplers - just look at any SF games tier list.
Well you're saying the game is so easy that even a fucking retard can be the best, so I gave you the benefit of the doubt in thinking you weren't worse off than a literal fucking retard and able to reach the top rank.
I guess I was wrong.
Urien's antiair takes way more forethought since you have to figure out which one is actually going to connect at which ranges, then if you want to use HK you have to make sure you're not holding back so you don't get that fuckass command normal, and then you can finally do the antiair
Basically if you're not completely anticipating the jump you end up having to block
Also, getting even close to winning his unfavorable matches (which is half the cast, anyone like ryu karin birdie nash mika etc anyone who is considered to be a good character) requires knowing a lot of crazy setups and mixups, ways you can get an aegis going and then surprise your opponent to get a lot of damage out of it.
Urien has a lot of strong options but is still kind of at a disadvantage against really good characters until he gets aegis, and then it all comes down to whether your aegis shenanigans are good enough to get you the W.
How do I into anti air with karin ?
Swear to god it's impossible to anti air with her.
jab
Do that one move that looks like she's shrugging her shoulders
It'll beat most things, at least trade with others, and then you basically get a neutral reset from which you can start your fucking bullshit autopilot pressure game again you karin fuck
There is literally no reason not to learn it when it was obvious that it wasn't going to be removed during the tournament season.
>back to square one
Nah, it's more like back to square "I'm basically in your face regardless of you getting the read so you better start backdashing like a madman and praying I didn't press roundhouse".
I cannot say much about zoners, since I play Bison/Balrog and those don't give me trouble -not even Guile- but simply seeing Sim get destroyed in 4 seconds makes me see a very strong character under a thick layer of being good.
I have to think you have not played against one of those Zangiefs that hits every SPD. I just cannot consider a character that can block punish my st. hp with an SPD "low tier".
Justin "I'm not just too lazy to exercise, I'm also too lazy to practice" Wong
I don't know, man, just think about how tough it'll be for the players that relied on it too much, it's such a strong tool that those who use it regularly are sure to see their performance drop significantly.
Look at Daigo, for example, in regards to AA: he doesn't do jab, he actually goes for the DP, so he isn't going to be "nerfed" if they finally take AA jabs out of the game.
>tfw accidentally posted poll results in the wrong thread
You asshats are still useless.
>Should I learn this technique that'll help me win Capcom Cup?
>Nope. It'll be gone next year and I'll have to take all of one month to break the habit when there's another 11 months until the next Capcom Cup
Your foresight is amazing. Option selects will always be in the game.
at a high level ryu is difficult to use
I'm not a competitor so my "foresight" doesn't matter, I'm just saying Justin is probably doing it to filter out bad habits.
>bad habits take a month to clean
YOUR foresight is amazing; you don't just take something you've been doing a whole fucking year and throw out of the window. It's fucking OS, it's not just a bad hand habit, it's a fucking exploit that wins the mixup for you, making your read muscle stupid in those kinds of scenarios.
Not really, inputs and combos stay the same, all his high level stuff is universal
Use s.Hp for far jumps
Use Jab for close jumps
jf Tenko for style
j.Mp beats a lot of things too if you want the a2a.
Remember, when in doubt, Sappo out.
cr.HP is trash unless you are going for a meaty setup, CC Shenanigans or stick a CC in the corner where you can actually get good damage out of it. It beats a lot of things AA, but you have to be further back than you think and you have to almost do it preemptively because of how slow it is raw.
>I'm just saying Justin is probably doing it to filter out bad habits.
Not that guy, but Justin has been doing jump back OS for a while now. No idea why you fuckers who don't pay attention to tournaments talk about them.
>YOUR foresight is amazing; you don't just take something you've been doing a whole fucking year and throw out of the window.
Worked with crouch teching.
I don't know about him doing it now or not, I'm going by one of his streams when this tech had been out for some time and when asked he said "I don't feel like doing it", so I took it he still didn't do it; I do watch tournaments, I just don't the borefest that is Karin, let alone a Karin without optimal combos.
>worked with crouch teching
But that habit still works unless you get shimmied, you are still doing a proper delayed tech that'll break tick throws, it's not like delayed teching has been killed, it's just more risky to do. If the jump tech OS is removed, then he'll completely lose that hand habit and will have a sleeping read muscle.
>someone voted for Necalli
OH FOR THE LOVE OF FUCKING CHRIST
If you don't watch Justin play then don't talk about how Justin plays. Furthermore, crouching teching is an OS. It has nothing to do with delayed teching.
I'm not talking about "how Justin plays", Jesus fuck, read the fucking thread, I'm just pointing out that if he isn't/wasn't using it I could see the reasoning.
Crouch teching HAS to do with delayed teching, you are doing the same thing, a tech on block stun, it just so happened that in IV you didn't whiff your throw, in V you do, but the hand habit of teching on block stun is still there. Are you trying to tell me both things aren't the same input and do the same thing but one is just a safe OS while the other can be punished?
>Dude was dogshit in USF4
Why would this even mean anything? To be good in USF4, the primary thing you needed was lab work. It doesn't speak all that loudly for someone as a player. Why the fuck would anyone use USF4 as an indicator over whether someone is good at fighting games or not?
Just go Alex
He has the most hype factor and is mid tier enough that no one can call you out for playing bullshit
>that fact that someone is willing to actually put in time and effort in the lab doesnt speak that loudly for them as a player
>Crouch teching HAS to do with delayed teching, you are doing the same thing, a tech on block stun
That's not crouch teching. Crouch teching is an OS that will give you a crouching short on whiff and a tech if you're being thrown. You do not have to be in blockstun to crouch tech.
>Are you trying to tell me both things aren't the same input and do the same thing but one is just a safe OS while the other can be punished?
They aren't the same thing because you can't tech while holding downback in SFV.
It does not speak for their skill as a player, it just speaks for how much time they're willing to put into the game to learn various OSes and shit which USF4 was very heavy in. Justin isn't considered a strong player because of stuff like that, they're considered good because they have a solid understanding of fighting games. That wouldn't take you far in USF4 unless you got down the tech part as well so you could actually implement said fundamentals into your gameplay.
Justin wasn't a strong player in SF4 because he was obstinate about sticking with Rufus because he got shit on for his lame style so he wanted to change it up to an offensive style character. He SHOULD have been playing Rose from the beginning.
>but eventually he shifted from SF to MVC as his focus
Wong STARTED as an Marvel player. He didn't lose a Marvel tournament or major from B5 in '01 until losing to Sanford at Breakpoint in '04 and if you look at the other tourneys from that event he took first in everything else (Super Turbo, CvS2 and 3S) except Guilty Gear. I think maybe some fo the newer games have passed him by a little bit although we'll see when/if Marvel 4 comes out since that's always been his main thing.
'09ers who don't really know of the scene pre-SF4 outside of shit like Moment 37 don't really know. Guy's legit probably the best all around American player of all time.
