Fighting games are dying, that much is true.
But is there any real way to save them and make them relevant again to the mainstream?
Fighting games are dying, that much is true.
But is there any real way to save them and make them relevant again to the mainstream?
Mortal Kombat and the LoL fighting game.
Why do you keep making this thread?
Were they ever mainstream, outside of SFII?
Yes, but you always whine about lol casuals every time I bring up a solution, so fuck you.
tag team fighting game
Reduce the amount of animu fighting games
You could stop making this thread, that might work.
Make them 3D with different modes (including team modes).
Elitism kills games. You gotta switch up the formula a bit so fighting games don't always play like other fighting games. Make fighting games actual games again and not some sort of esport bullshit or something.
but fighters are the most gameplay focused genre there is
wrong genre
Only if someone makes something new and exciting again.
How do you make fighting games more game-y?
only way to make them relevant to the mainstream is to make them irrelevant to the hardcore. Mass casualization across the board while showering the users with praise.
Let them die otherwise you will end up with the fighting game equivalent of Thiaf and wish for the sweet, sweet release of death
They're fine, I don't get why people aren't comfortable being niche. Mainstream acceptance only brings casualization and idiots (which is really fucking awful I'm such a community focused genre)
Stop dumbing them down for starters.
Fighting games are the games are the highest skill ceiling of vidya, there's no joy to be found playing casual shit, because casual will always be bad at them. Just go look at rising storm vids, casuals still bitch.
You basically need to lower the skill floor of fighting games to make them acessable to new players. This doesn't mean completely casualising them, there can still be a high skill ceiling. But I think what turns a lot of people away feom fighting games is the training required to git gud at them. Compared to something like a rhytm game, online fps etc. Fighting games almost require a studious approach to them: learning and memorising combos and practxing them alone while other genres of games often can be played normally by new players who gradually develop the skills and reflexes required for high level play.
This is actually a really valid point, there's a reason melee is so popular right now
Fighting was never relevant
But what little fanbase is dose have is dying because of rampant elitism
It stifles developers looking to expand the genre
It drives away new players
At it makes your average normie looking in on a tournament steam just turn it off and walk away
So unless the entire fanbase changes the majority attitude, (they are not, fighting is all they have in life) its just going to keep slowly dying until dev costs outway any potential profit from sales
Then every fighting game will be casual trash because they last people who cared will have stopped, because no money
playing fighting games online only got me bullied continuously and mercilessly, like fighting games are mostly about making sure your opponent feels bad about losing / locking them into combos so they cant play. regardless if you ask for them to go easy because you are new.
the only time the bulling stops is if I sent voice messages, tho it was a coin flip for whether they feel a little bad or they double down and get even worse.
fuck people that are good at fighting games 70% of them are dicks and fuck fighting games.
How do you even make a fighting game that makes losing feel good?
It's impossible therefore fighting games are dying. You can't expect a millenial to man up a go to training mode either. See this:That means getting rid of dp motion then because casuals can't even do that. God forbid they tried it more than 4 times.
how does one go easy
Fighting games are alright.
Gay animu shit like BB and GG isnt selling but thats obvious.
Fighting games are the definition of game you fucking nigger.
>dude just stop trying too hard. just play worse.
>no combos please. fireballs are spammy and for fags.
>No supers, they're unfair. Can't you please stop blocking?
>Stop throwing me!
And then these people expect to get better at the game.
Persona 4 Arena has the best template for a simple fighter but fucked up by going hard in the anime mechanics.
If you aren't learning fighting games by playing with other people you are doing it wrong. Unless you are playing UMvC3. That is the only true lab monster game.
No you're a homo.
If you're a shit new player play against other shit new players.
It doesnt matter how deep the game is, casuals can have a LOT of fun with something like Virtua Fighter.
If anything fighting games should put a focus on setting up lobbies for beginners so that they can learn together and have fun together.
Optimally you should just play with your friends anyways, thats how people did it two decades ago.
Remember when people had friends and didnt just go into ranked instantly?
Mortal Kombat and Injustice sell buckets.
You need to create lots of compelling single player content, and lots of different modes. That's it.
People have realised that you can have just as much fun playing RPS
how does anybody get better at a game if they cant even get a button press in
This
Numales only want to play singleplayer shit and MK is a fucking dogshit game competitively
>attacking a stationary target makes you better
Nope because people keep on eating the shit that crapcom shits out.
First of all you need Warnerbros tier marketing budget.
Anything past that doesnt matter.
Soul Calibur games always shat on MK when it comes to single player content and they never sold as much as MKX.
Gotta have the marketing to reach the casual audience.
Also Injustice didnt even sell a lot.
Thinking about how to get in a situation where you can press buttons? Endless pressure does not exist. It's not that you can't press buttons, it's that you don't know when. And you can only learn against someone who is trying.
First you hold back to block. Then you work your way up from there.
Also makes me wonder what kind of people you play against when you just got the game.
You definitely wont meet good players when you start ranked from 0.
Infiltration became one of the best at SF4 despite having to play alone because SF wasn't respected as an Esport yet in Korea. He explained his method in an interview. All he could do was think about situations and test them.
Training mode is just a feature though. Some top players don't go into the lab at all. Tekken as a community says you can't even really learn anything in the lab until you just sit down and play some real matches.
Rising thunder proved this is wrong. People will always find something to blame for their loss. See the video of the guy raging at Chell.
The truth is casuals couldn't give the slightest fuck about gameplay. The success is determined by stuff like appealing characters and style and single player content, which is why mk is such a hit with gore and story modes.
Training mode is useless in any game if you are just starting out (outside of learning your bnb and moves).
soul calibur 5, only played against people that had 500+ games played against my 0
you say that but I played for 3 hours and could hardly touch anybody
Online training is bretty good though.
And if people got some pointers they could actually utilize training mode in a way that benefits them.
Like, so many dont know how to anti air and its not hard to set a dummy to jump attack.
People just arent aware of it so they dont use it.
Training mode is mighty but underused.
>3hours
lel
>3 hours
Just give up, you don't have the attention span for it
3 hours is literally 0 time especially if you are new. That's like learning how to play an instrument and complaining you can't play a full song after 3 hours.
That said, if you play something like sfv there's a lot of people rookie/low bronze level which you should at the very least be able to press buttons against and win rounds against in the first half an hour of playing unless you're mentally handicapped.
>3 hours
You have got to be under 18 years old.
Change it up from the classical 2d with invisible walls on the left and right and a stamina bar.
Smash brothers, for instance, shook the genre up and brought it back to the limelight, until nerds started saying it's a different genre because it's not the same thing that's been done 1000 times before.
that really is the reality of it huh, no thanks I dont want to come home from school studying to study fighting games for all my free time to even stand a chance at it then go to work.
Any competitive activity will have this exact same
"problem".
The only way to avoid it is to introduce random elements (so that someone who is worse can sometimes randomly win). Make it a team game (the sum skill of the team will sometimes allow you to win, that is, to be 'carried'). Lower the skill ceiling so much that the flailings of the uninitiated have the same strategic impact of a good player. Or to introduce mechanics which lopside the game enough that someone of lower skill can, at least for a moment, FEEL like they are being able to hang with the better player.
>tfw I realize I just described blizzard games
Either way, Rising Thunder showed that even with near zero mechanical barrier, good players will still utterly crush weaker players. Because the skill is not in the mechanics but understanding the game. Which takes time, effort, and practice.
Competitive games just aren't for you. Which isn't bad. But this is why they won't be mainstream so long as they maintain true competitive quality.
Literally this, I have no idea how a beginner matchmaking would work without being flooded by smurfs but fighting games are only ever fun when both players have roughly the same skill level
If you're both around the same skill every match is fun, with different shit happening as you try and beat each other.
If one guy's better than the other though, the guy that's worse will want to kill himself while getting punched in the corner, and the better guy is either having a laugh about it or feeling kinda bad if both people know each other.
Because you faggots take the bait everytime and all these (You)'s :D
Dunno man. It's so much easier for someone to play something like Overwatch, play like a tard and let their team win the match. Score a few kills, ignore the objectives.
Fighting games, by comparison, are fucking hardcore. You have to learn complicated inputs, master combos, footsies, and shit's 1 on 1 so failure is always on you. People will be psychologically more inclined to the other shit.
Stop focusing on an ever shrinking audience of ultra-hardcore fighting game enthusiasts who cut their teeth on arcade cabinets in the 90s. Not everyone can full parry Chun-Li's super in 3S. Do you know why Smash is so goddamn popular? Accessibility. Do you need to know all the advanced tech to have fun? Of course not. Does it add to the experience? Definitely.
Open up your game to players of all skill levels and watch your audience grow. I hate to make the comparison, but it's what worked for MOBAs.
Yeah, but Mobas are the fucking cancer of the industry
Rising thunder begs to differ.
Even the creator says it's not a fighting game.
Smash is not a fighting game, nintentoddler
This.
We live in a generation where everyone is a weak cuck who blames others instead of blaming themselves.
Smash is popular because it has Nintendo characters and items and stuff.
I would rather have it dead than turning the genre into a casual fest.
I'm gonna go full anectdotal, but I feel like it's not even the items, just the nintendo characters. Most the games of smash I wind up playing with casuals tend to be no items(except Smash Ball), 4 stock, 8 player camp fests.
It's by far the most boring shit in existence.
Gundam and Dissidia are the future of fighters.
>blaming yourself for your failures
I bet you voted for Trump, you bigot
They are not even popular outside gundam in Japan because it's gundam in Japan.
Fighting Games are shit because they are barely even a 2-player game.
It's a 1 player game where you both take turns doing your combos and shit. So if you're fighting someone better than you, you don't even get to play, you spend the entire match watching yourself get juggled, It's a stupid genre that needs to die.
Smash Bros is the only fighter that did it right.
But the same thing happens in smash if you fight people who are actually good.
You made the same thread yesterday and I already told you the answer
VR controllers, so you actually have to perform or mimic martials arts in order to fight, kinda like a fighting simulator. Also realistic consequences, you knock them unconsciouss you rape them, giving a whole new meaning to fan service in fighting games, what's the point of having sluts like cammy if you can't screw their pussy/anus?
make inputs easy like smash or an action game
make the movement like dmc/gears of war if 3d with a 3d camera(ie. no fake clunky 3d shit like tekken)
add blood and gore cursing and nudity
no faggy looking bad designed anime characters(cool anime shit like jojo or kenshiro is allowed)
environmental interaction/hazards
congrats, people want to play fighting games now
Fighting games were never relevant ot the mainstream. SF2 was, and SF2 alone. SF4 met with success because it was SF2 with 3D graphics as far as most people were concerned.
t. casual babby who eats mobashit for breakfast
Best idea is to improve AI.
What you want to do is create about 10 different AIs based on real players for people to play against. Some will be crappy, some will be pro-level, but all will have their own quirks and reaction times. There's a level of variance that means sometimes they play worse than others, but they are definably a 'person with tendancies' that it feels like you're playing against.
This then saves single player modes in fighting games, prepares new players for online and thus saves the genre itself.
Smash Bros is a party game.
Fighting games are dead because the japanese were solely responsible for their survival, and the japanese are incapable of innovating, so after 20 years the most it's changed is minor tweaks.
It doesn't help that most western fighting games are homages to japanese fighting games.
So the only good fighting games you end up with are wildcards like injustice or the new MK, which could have just as easily have been irredeemable shit.
Fighting games suck dick because two guys "zone" eachother until one of them gets off his 75% life combo off.
Shit's boring, did that ever happen in a bruce lee movie? No
I want a fighting game where 90% of it is trading blocked blows until you can get a quick 1-2 out, a 4-5 hit combo should be an amazing feat, not rigmarole.
Add skills with cooldowns, add ultimates.
What fighting game should I play if I never played them before, and I only have a pc?
Mortal Kombat and Injustice are relevant.
Not because of how good they are or anything, but simply because of brand and characters.
The next big fighting game is going to be the league of legends fighting game. The next actually good fighting game is going to be whatever French Bread decides to create next.
The reason fighting games are not mainstream is because the netcode, majority of them uses delay based which is shit and most people wants to play online and feel the game as the same as the offline.
If they wanted an esports approach they should be correcting the netcode part, then implement a ranking system in a way that you will have low rate of pros or medium level players on the low ranks.
You're an idiot
Street fighter 5 is for babies and is played alot so that
If you have windows 10 try killer instinct
Yeah you can make it so that you don't have to be autistic in order to remember the moves. That Z-motion shit can go to hell too.
also, they should implement cosmetic rewards for playing and getting ranks, like the loot boxes in Overwatch, RNG rewards are getting popular lately.
Fighting games are having a hard time to adapt to the times and if they refuse they will just die out.
That doesnt work cause there isnt a big playerbase compared to mobas or fps and even if the netcode is perfect, even the slighties lag can be noticed since its interacting with the other player 100% of the time while in other games is interacting with the static enviorement most of the time as opposed to other players, thus it invalidates playing against people to far, so if you live in a country where your fighting game isnt popular and only a few tourneyfags play it, your doomed to either play it in unplayable conditions against noobs or play with good connection aganst gods that will stomp you 100% of the time
Make more fighting games fun
like melee
Literally a hadouken motion (qcf) with pressing forward in the beginning
If you cant give the time to learn that baby shit, how will you take the time to learn frame data, character matchups, setups, punish moves and all the other shit?
but isn't that also Smash after someone down throws you into several air attacks
post stage themes
youtube.com
They have a player base now, but that's because they created an environment for that, not the other way around.
Team based FPS was almost dead, and then Overwatch happened.
>Team based FPS was almost dead, and then Overwatch happened.
CS:GO? Hello?
>Team based FPS was almost dead, and then Overwatch happened.
Tf2? cs:go? Tribes a few years ago? Fps had always had huge playerbases, plus its fucking blizzard, lets wait till they make a fighting game, it could be more casual than fucking brawl and it will be the most played thing anyways
And as i say, lag affects fighters differently than fps, i can play people from other continents perfectly in any given fps, with fighters thats immposible
It's not even bait though, it's a legitimate thread with a good OP. Just that copy and pasting it makes it old.
I don't think this is impossible, Skullgirls has small international tournaments for example, and that would not be possible otherwise.
Wanna know how to make fighting games fun?
Singleplayer shit.
If SFV would've had the features of GG Xrd fighting game would be in an okay shape. Instead we got early access.
They need a full multiplat release for MvC4. And all that advertising.
Don't get hit
>GGXrd PS4 $17.99
No excuse, assholes. Go buy it. Support good fighting games.
>PS4
I'd rather wait 6 months for the PC version.
