I liked that Fujiko anime spinoff series done semi-recently. Bretty good.

I heard the Fujiko spinoff was somewhat violent (since i started with cagliostro) so i never watched it.
In Cagliostro One cope does die, from what I remember, and his death happens quick and clean so it's not really a big thing.

Honestly, I've watched most of it, and can barely remember half the names. But there are some great ones, and the new Blue Jacket series is fucking fantastic. Operation return the Treasure was great. Episode 0, Missed by a Dollar and Stolen Lupin were all really fun. Also once you're really familiar with the characters and series go check out the new live action movie, it's not 'muh lupin' but has some neat shit in it and it's worth a cursory watch.


I always considered Cagliostro to be the First in the unofficial Ghibli Castles trilogy, Cagliostro, Laputa and Howl.

Also if you want a pretty good non Sup Forums lupin game, pic related is highly recommended if you can scrounge up a gang. The gang make a plan (whoever plays zenigata has to leave while they plot the theft) and whoever plays as fujiko can betray the gang for a solo win.

I remember wanting to watch all the Lupin episodes I could find but discovering there was pretty much no way to do so, legally or torrenting. No torrents were up. That was like 7 years ago and I never bothered to look back into it. Maybe torrents are up now

Manga Lupin is a serial rapist and murderer that will fuck over anyone to get what he wants. Also the manga doesn't have a continuity. Each chapter is a different continuity. In the same volume you can have three stories of lupin and jigen meeting for the first time, one where they kill each other, work together or one hires the other etc. But in general the characterisation is tweaked for the movie such as

actual spoilers of cagliosto follow

- Lupin revealing the final treasure of the flooded roman village he then describes as 'a treasure too big for his pocket' which means nothing to manga lupin, he'd charge a door price or steal all the bricks and rebuild it on land he owned.
- Lupin and Zenigata work together rushing the castle to take down the lord
- Lupin literally gives zenigata the illegal printing press while (i think fujiko) films him to 'accidentally' reveal the printing press to the world keeping zenigata out of legal shit. Fujiko would charge him and lupin would never help zenigata.
-Lupin acts more like robin hood, a dashing gentleman instead of a 'EVERYTHING IS MINE INCLUDING HER VIRGINITY, YOINK' of the 70s lupin mangas.

To mention a few. It's still a great characterisation but Miyazaki softens Lupin a lot.

Probably the biggest reason I like Cagliostro was because of his character change.

Lupin's mostly in character. The main girl of the movie is jailbait, so he had to refrain from being his usually pervy self.

Lupin III part 4 is fucking great.

Rebecca a total cutie, and needs to be added to the roster as a regular fucking stat. They actually introduced a sixth to the gang and she works well with everyone, adding a new dimension to the gang after 50 fucking years is a goddamn feat and I hope she sticks around. She totally plays off each character differently and really adds to the character dynamics. I can't recommend Blue Jacket enough you guys, check it out.

What of Lupin III is worth watching? All I've seen so far is Castle of Cagliostro, which I thought was great, and a little bit of the first two series, which I honestly couldn't get into because of how old they felt.

Well Fujiko is an opportunistic cunt, and they both easily see through her shit. Lupin simply suffers from battered wife syndrome.

I'm not too wild about her, she takes too much screentime away from the action.

Cagliostro is certainly the best of the movies, but in a way it's not a very good "Lupin" movie, if you get what I mean.

He kills people in Part I. Hell, he was never above killing people in the anime.

It was really pretty to look at, and the OST was fucking A.

The only thing I disliked is how the ending went full retard; but at least it's only like 2 or 3 episodes long and it never really affected the rest of the show.

In a lot of the old manga he's identified as a thief, rapist and murderer. In the west you're looking for the tokyopop lupin mangas called Lupin III and Lupin III: World's Most Wanted.

I can't find any direct scans online but here's the closest I got. For some reason nobody scanned any of the lupin mangas. I've got a collection but not with me at the moment.

But yeah the old mangas were pretty raunchy and full of murders back in the day.

Yeah there was a LOT of goofy slapstick shit in the early books, people getting blown up, thrown out of planes etc.

Plus gags like hands coming out of vases pointing guns at lupin kind of thing. Fun fact, Lupin getting a spinoff that got cancelled is what lead to a contract opening, so they quickly threw out a series and it was Inspector Gadget.

So IG wouldn't exist if Lupin got a spinoff (lupin in space I shit you not) So Chief Quimby's thing of appearing in stupid places like a safe to deliver an exploding note to gadget is likely entirely a reference to the lupin series that is responsible for IG's existence.

Last one, sorry for spamming the thread with images. The PS2 game isn't bad though. I've tried some of the japanese games but to be fair there are hardly any really great lupin videogames.

He could be, though one has to remember Scooby never had any kind of continuity. Even MI was kind of vague about how it starts off as a pseudo sequel to Where are you? and then ends as a meta-prequel.

Sort of. They imply the gang will go on their Where are you? adventures before reaching the school Harlan Ellison is teaching at. Obviously, things would be different as the gang have their memories of the previous universe that got wiped. Funny thing is, the creators were spitballling some ideas for a hypothetical third season in which they solve a big mystery before reaching the university.
