Why are games not difficult anymore?

Why are games not difficult anymore?

Games barely deliver any challenge, they are just streamlined and give the player a sense of accomplishment for doing literally nothing.

Where is the sense of accomplishment if you just get through everything on the first try?

Beating a challenge that took you several retries is much more satisfying than just waltzing through the shit.

Different strokes for different folks, there are still a ton of challenging games and different difficulty settings for those like yourself.

>what is dark souls

Dark Souls was a nice change for a while with it's rather unforgiving gameplay and a world that entirely hates you.

You would think that the huge success it had would had shown some devolpers that difficulty can be enjoyable, but we still get the streamlined bullshit into everything.

there are still difficult games, you are only looking at the ones marketed towards the idiot audience and ignoring the ones that are hard
also, for the love of fuck, if a game offers you to play in hard difficulty and you don't choose that option don't you dare to then complain about it being easy
example: stalker

Because you only play shit games.

Try Furi

>singleplayer "games"
lmao

People bitched about sunless sea that it is too hard for them.
Even nostalgia players actually don't want a challenge anymore.

Dumb Moco Poster

maybe you are playing too much western shit.

...

Here's why: It's because modern players think beating Mario Galaxy 2 is the same thing as beating NES or SNES classics. They see it as completing a game, and therefore, some sort of impressive feat, regardless of the actual difficulty of the game.

Something I did recently was I beat Castlevania 1 without dying. The average modern gamer would think that's no big deal, because they beat pokemon sun / moon. They don't see the difference.

...

Time. They're so many video games out there now that people don't want their time wasted.

Further, achievements doesn't even feel like one anymore. Most games give it to you so easily it feels like pandering.

Add to that what OP said and I feel less achievement than before, like when I finished Mario 3 for the first time. That felt really good.

Two things: The first one is the excess of content the modern world provides. There's so much media to be consumed that nobody wants to spend too much time on a single game. This is the main reason why games that thrive on replayability are the focus. See fighting games, shmups and rail shooters, etc.

The second thing is that the new generation of people no longer like putting effort into things. It's all about instant gratification, because caring and putting effort sucks and is for losers. This in turn killed the MMO genre, among other things.

...

Games were mainly difficult in the early days to gobble up players' coins in arcades. Nowadays, it's all about the content amount rather than how many times you have to replay a game to master it.

I didn't know my NES and Genesis and had a coin slot

>Why are games not difficult anymore?

Pandering to the casual audience = more sales.

They didn't, but the development philosophies went over because a lot of developers were working on both kinds of games in those days. However, even by the Genesis days, you can start to see the difficulty wane in a lot of places.

You're all fucking wrong, especially
(You)
And
(You)
Holy shit you're so fucking stupid. Get your smug teenage heads out of your superiority complex filled asses.

Games don't need to be difficult anymore because they no longer need to be designed to eat your quarters and they no longer need to be 200 kb to fit on a nes cartridge. Games were made difficult in the 80s and 90s because if they weren't people would finish them in 15 minutes.

Fucking teenagers holy shit. I wish there was some sort of oldchan where you had to be 30+ to post fucking Christ.

Junko is cute!

Chill out, guy.

Junko is dead

LoLK lunatic 1cc no bombs no focus
Or maybe I'm just shit at 2hu

>Different strokes for different folks
You're trying to frame this like it's just a difference of opinion or something. No, challenging games from the 90's is what attracted so many people to video games in the first place.
>there are still a ton of challenging games and different difficulty settings for those like yourself.
But what do you do when the hardest difficulty is easy, as is the case with most modern games? Most people act like you're some sort of pariah and you just shouldn't be allowed to play video games if you say this.

>there are still difficult games
This statement misses the point, because the problem is, most games used to be challenging, and you'd have a small portion of games that were easy, entry level stuff. Now it's the opposite, most games are easy, and occasionally we get a challenging game. For instance, some people brought up Dark Souls earlier in the thread. I'm not saying it's the most challenging game ever or something, but I think it's a good example of the medium-hard difficulty that devs should strive for. But how did the community react to that game? They said it was "artificial difficulty", they said it was one of the worst games ever, and they acted like the only notable feature of the game was the difficulty. Nevermind the amazing level design, all the different weapons and different kinds of characters you can create, the amazing bosses, the replay value, the fun PvP, etc. - Because some stupid little kid died, and dying is now seen as some sort of flaw with the game, instead of a flaw with the player.

But if a game is really easy and boring, the community reacts by violently defending it, and basically saying "how dare you criticize this masterpiece".

You just suck at games and don't want a challenge. You got proven wrong here:
And you failed to debunk it here:
You don't know what's good for you.

>no focus
That's just silly

Just tryina make it challenging man.

Hurrr its just that people these durrrs dont want to wurrrk furrrrrr anythurrrrrrnk. All they want is instant gratifurrrrrtcrrrrtion.

>I'm 14 and think I'm better than everyone else. Also I spend hours daily trying to suck my own cock.

That's what these dumb fucking children like sound like to me.

Dark souls isn't hard stop this meme

See:

God I hate this meme. DS is not even that difficult. Fucking normies I swear.

Why is someone so angry over facts? Are we being raided?

Get to perfecting UFO instead of LoLK then

At the same time, there's a wide landscape between quarter-eating hard and the basically impossible to fail that is today's normal mode.

Granted, the games aren't the only issue, those of us that have been playing most of their life have know games on a level most people don't.

I was playing with someone recently, who was stuck on a puzzle that I solve in a few seconds just by looking at the room. Not because I'm particularly good, but because I've solved so many of those over the years that I know the pattern. There's grammar to it all, and we're too fluent to be satisfied by what once was good.

You seem personally insulted by this.
Do you really like instant gratification ?

CARTRIDGE CAPACITY you dumb fucking teenager.
>you dont want a challenge
Nice fucking strawman retard. You dont know shit about my taste in vidya. All i said is that games these days dont need to be artificially lengthened through difficulty.

You grew older and games got easier for you, but you assumed it was the games themselves and not just the fact that child you was an idiot like all children.

Hell the first Zelda game felt extremely hard to me when I played it back then, but now I reckon it wouldn't be as hard to finish.

I don't think it's that different, but maybe there are just more options and platforms now compared to then.

>artificially lengthened
You mean be of normal length because they provide a challenge and it's natural that you wouldn't succeed the first time through? Instead of being a bloated cutscene mess

Get Rabi Ribi and put it on hard mode nigger

>CARTRIDGE CAPACITY you dumb fucking teenager.
Not relevant
>Nice fucking strawman
You don't want to stand by your implications, so you call it a strawman argument
>retard
lol you're the retard
>You dont know shit about my taste in vidya.
Oh really? Because you're talking up instant gratification and talking about how great it is and how everybody should love it. >All i said is that games these days dont need to be artificially lengthened through difficulty.
What the fuck is this? A strawman argument of your own words? You're strawmanning yourself? I'm done.

I call bullshit on that children being idiot thing. Less educated (in this case in gaming patterns) doesn't mean stupid. Hell, looking at all the games, kids will clear games, and the ways they clear them, I(d say most kids are pretty much smarter than adults.

This is a typical excuse, but have a non-gamer play the average modern game, then play an NES or SNES game. They'll complete the modern game within a few hours, and feel a false sense of gratification, but they won't be able to complete the old game.

>not relevant
Hahahahaha

You can't physically fit a 10 hour long action game on a 500kb cartridge. You could make a game last a respectable length by either killing the player a million times and giving them game overs, or you could make a slow, grindy turn based rpg like final fantasy.

>I'm done
No, I'm fucking done.
