As someone who wants to get into the series, whats the best way to play MGS 1? The playstation original, or the twin snakes?

Original

both

Which should I play first? I've never played an mgs game before

The original.

Not a Sony fan boy btw, I'm just telling you the truth.
The PS1 and 2 qre probably the most overrated consoles of all time, but the most pure experience is to go from beginning to end in original release order.

Original only. Ignore Twin Snakes.

Original.

ORIGINAL.
The TTS version is a butchered, god-awful joke remake. You can maybe give it a shot after the series, if you want to laugh your ass off and wonder WTF were they thinking.

Besides that, rest is simple: Play them in release order! The MGS Legacy Collection makes acquiring the entire series very easy.

Remember to read up the short summaries of MG1 and 2 in the MGS1's main menu, and also watch the "Briefing" videos. Reading the games' manuals and trying some VR Training before jumping to the campaign would be very recommended too.

whichever is cheaper, Twin Snakes is a perfect remake, no different, no better, no worse

really just depends on whether you want to play it as it was originally debuted or not

although there's a certain quicktime minigame I find much easier on a Gamecube controller

I was pretty much going to emulate the games up until 4, so acquiring them was never an issue

original.

release order, starting with mgs1

this guys on point, except (imo) dont bother with the vr training

>Perfect remake
Then why is the Voice acting, music, cutscenes and direction so much worse then Nintenyearold?
Nobody, NOBODY, can objectively refute this so get fucked

The voice acting wasn't recorded in somebody's apartment for starters.

theres a PC version of 1 & 2

I've seen this claim many times in the past, but what the hell is the source for it?

Bullshit. It's fucking awful:

-You start with maximum HP and ammo cap, instead of "leveling up" after each boss fight.
-the new voice acting and soundtrack suck.
-the new localization sucks ass, and is pretty much direct Jap-to-English shit now.
-The MGS2 controls and moves, in unaltered MGS1 environments and enemy placements = the game becomes piss easy. The bossfights took the biggest hit, since you can now simply snipe them with your handgun.
-The added Dogtag collecting has no purpose at all, unlike in MGS2.
-The cutscenes are way too fucking crazy, being filled with 5 meter 360 double backflips and Matrix slowmotion. Oh, and tons of added "humor", which just ruins the characters and mood.
-To be honest? The Twin Snakes also looks fugly. Everything's just gray and cyan now, ruining the cold and dark industrial mood the original has. And the 3D models look waxy.

Original with top tier german voice acting.

>read up on MG1 and 2
No. Just no.

PLAY METAL GEAR 1 AND 2!!!
Don't listen to anyone that tells you to skip them. Most likely a Playstationbabby

This so much.

Play original, but DO NOT SKIP the metal gear games

you do know that the only way a typical westerner would've gotten to play the REAL MG1 and 2 would've been via MGS3:Subsistence's bonus disc, or the HD port?

So what has that to do with Playstation fags?
MG1 has aged terribly. MG2:SS is pretty cool though, but not really necessary this day and age either.

MG2, in special, is really fucking great.

I used to be of the opinion that you should play the original first and then play twin snakes if you just want a different experience.

However recently its come to light that hideo made twin snakes everything he could've wished for 1 to be. People complain about the cinematic differences in TS but the cutscenes follow the same direction hideo was headed as noted by future MGS games. The voice acting is still great with all the original voice actors back.

One of the greatest reasons to play TTS is for the better English translations. Back with mgs1 the team was small and translations were rough. In TTS they knew how better to translate so that no story was lost. This is specifically important in the cutscene with psycho mantis where a line was changed from "nice" in mgs1 to "nostalgic" in TTS. This completely changes the history we now know of the character and confirms certain things that were left up in the air.

The upgraded visuals aren't even a factor, I personally like how mgs1 looks. But you cannot pass up on the more true translation that TTS offers as it makes more sense to the series entire story.

Original for sure, it may look like ass but it's a classic, twin snakes messes up the voice acting and gameplay

Kojima can go fuck himself if any of that is true. Which I quite doubt, to be honest. Otherwise, it's George Lucas all over again.

People claiming that TTS is anything like the later sequels have no understanding of the themes and balance of the characters in the series' stories. In the main-series' MGS games, Snake is always the "normal human", going against a bunch of circus and tech-freaks, winning only because he's so good and tough.

The english translations are also nothing but a huge downgrade. I don't give a fuck what the nips think, a literal, direct Jap-2-Eng google translation does NOT work well 99.9% of the time, and is one reason why MGS4 sounded and felt so horrible and a slog.

Also, the visual design and overall looks of TTS are nothing but a downgrade too.

Go ahead doubt that's what any idiot does when confronted with facts. Kojima handpicked the guy he wanted to work on all cinematically for TTS and also was constantly around to quality check the game.

>snake is always the "normal human"
Except literally not since he is a clone of big boss and basically a super soldier.

If you actually think they used google translations for something like that then you must be 12 years old. I don't know why I'm trying to reason with a 12 year old.

>game is called "Metal Gear Solid"
>If you actually think they used google translations for something like that then you must be 12 years old.

>Kojima handpicked the guy he wanted to work on all cinematically for TTS and also was constantly around to quality check the game.
Oh, you're talking about THAT guy.
Kojima literally gave him free hands with TTS, just to make the game "not be too similar to original". Too bad said guy was in total Matrix-fever at the time.

>If you actually think they used google translations for something like that then you must be 12 years old.
How to spot a real 15 year old:
1) They don't know that Google Translator did not even exist back in early 00s
2) They don't understand methaphors, nor sarcasm.

Bye bye now

>tfw MGS6 is going to be a zombie shooter

Twin Snakes is fine. But it hurt Sony pride, so of course it must be shat on.

The Twin Snakes injects over-the-top cartoon action all over the place for no reason. It turns the gritty look of the original into messy pastel colors. A few of the voice actors just phone it in for TTS. The new gameplay elements clash with the original level design. The guard reactions are all fucked up, patrolling like they do in MGS2, but then instantly appearing without having to radio in like they do in MGS1 leading to very frustrating moments. Achieving Big Boss rank is a piece of cake in TTS.

On the plus side, it makes a tedious end game objective far less tedious and makes a couple of bosses more challenging (while also making others a complete joke.)

Oh, and the music is shit in TTS.

Play the original.

MGS1, MGS2 HD, MGS3 HD, MGS4, end

And if you like unnecessary entries play Peace Walker, GZ, and TPP after MGS4. Don't play Twin Snakes ever. Shit's just embarrassing.

Twin Snakes. Much more accessible and enjoyable.

>Oh, and the music is shit in TTS.
Lies and slander.

It's pretty fucking generic dude

Especially when compared to the sick drum beats and atmospheric setup of TAPPY

>Snake is always the "normal human"
He's a literal super soldier on the genetic level. If anything, Snake is the freak, and the Foxhound gang (guessing you're ignoring MG1 and 2, because Snake was certainly the circus freak there) are just somewhat okay.
>Also, the visual design and overall looks of TTS are nothing but a downgrade too.
Delicious butthurt. Or was it really improved by characters not having faces?

>FOXHOUND
>somewhat okay
>the team with the drug addicted sniper, telekinetic homicidal gas mask freak, shaman that seems to be able to communicate with birds, quadruple spy that has a crazy obsession with his husbando, guy that perfectly disguises himself as other people DOWN TO THEIR FUCKING BLOOD, and a British cry baby that can teleport out of exploding helicopters and survive a thousand explosions
>somewhat okay

What are you even saying? The very first boss in MGS had arcane bullets that bounced off walls at unreal angles and the second one literally threw telekinesis at you.

The Playstation original. The game is far better balanced around its mechanics, and the voice work (a large part of the game) is much, much better.

>you will never be Operation Intrude N313

>you do know that the only way a typical westerner would've gotten to play the REAL MG1 and 2 would've been via MGS3:Subsistence's bonus disc, or the HD port?
>Implying emulation wasn't a thing in 1998.
I played the MSX Metal Gear 1 and the fan-translated version of Metal Gear 2 just before MGS1 came out. There's even more options now that pretty much every version of MGS3 that matters include them as well (even though I prefer the original character portraits traced over from celebrity photographs).

>MG1 has aged terribly.
It holds up as well as Zelda 1 if you ask me.

Yea. A sniper chick, a big Injun who's a bit loopy, a mimic, Ocelot, and a psychic. The last one is the only really weird one. And Liquid used the ejector seat. Did you not see the parachute? Otherwise he just has plot armour.

The first one is technically doable. Just very difficult.

>and the voice work (a large part of the game) is much, much better.
Flat out lie.

>holds up as well as Zelda 1
So, not very?

I'm
And I hadn't actually fully read your post, I didn't realize you're just a shitposter. Props for getting me to give you a (You), fampai.

>Flat out lie.
I can understand dropping the accents, but the line changes are just stupid and I don't know how anyone could argue for them as improvements.

>You of all people know that he died in Zanzibarland
>You yourself... In Zanzibarland.

>It's not a weakness, I prefer to think of it as a character flaw.
>It's not a weakness, it's a weak point.

Can't address my point, so I'm the shitposter? Classic.

>but the line changes are just stupid
Most are improvements. The two you pointed out are not. I can't actually recall the latter, though, and i just played it two days ago.

The PSX version's voice work flows much better and isn't as stilted. It also has more natural emotion, and the script isn't as awkwardly written as the remake's script.

Also, the lighting in the PSX version just felt more engaging in my opinion, even if stuff like the sniper alley being green might not make the most sense.

>Also, the lighting in the PSX version just felt more engaging in my opinion
Probably because you played it first? It's still plenty green in TTS. And Otacon is lousy in both, but i think that's just because i'm spoiled from Huey in TPP having actual character.

>To be honest? The Twin Snakes also looks fugly.
Thank you.

The models are so fucking weird and gross in Twin Snakes. I've thought this long before I ever got into MGS. What were they thinking?

It was after MGS2, which looked fine.
What happened?

>Most are improvements.
No they aren't. They're baffling changes made for no reason other than to avoid paying royalties to the original translator by claiming it's a new translation.

>It all went down five hours ago. Heavily armed soldiers occupied Shadow Moses Island, a remote island off the coast of Alaska.
>About five hours ago, A Island in Alaska's Fox Archepelogo called Shadow Moses Island, was occupied by Special Ops soldiers.

>As usual, this is a one-man infiltration mission.
>As always, this is a one-man sneaking mission

>Which means that the president must be meeting with his top aides in the Map Room about now, huh ?
>So there's alotta crap hitting fans in the White House basement.

>The six members of FOXHOUND in charge are all hardened veterans. They're tough enough to eat nails and ask for seconds.
>I wouldn't expect anything less from FOXHOUND.

> The six in charge are plenty tough. After all, they're FOXHOUND people.
>Hey, you're gonna make me blush

Having played MG1, I would say that reading a synopsis is fine.

MG2 is where the magic's at.
MG1 is... kind of just for fans now. Not what I would call a strong entry point.

>What happened?
MGS2 was developed in-house. TTS was outsourced to Silicon Knights.

>Mods delete the other MGS1 thread because it was too critical and we can't have that

Venom didn't care about Quiet.

I will point out this fact in every single mg/s thread until all mg/s discussion dies.

Metal Gear 1 can be utter hell to get through. Metal Gear 2 is worth more of a playthrough, especially since its story is far more than just "Big Boss screws you over in a radio call/Jennifer has pixel-hunt places you have to call her from".

If you want more of a summary than the one MGS 1 provides for what happened in MG 1 and 2, you could probably watch the final stretch (not just the final boss) of each game on Youtube after reading up on what Outer Heaven is and watching MG 2's intro.

>until all mg/s discussion dies.
But nobody fucking cares about Venom

What are you talking about?

Kaz did, Quiet did, all of Diamond Dogs did, Big Boss did, D-Dog did. No one cared about Quiet.

Twin Snacks was garbage.

I mean nobody talking about Metal Gear gives a single shit about Venom

I only played the first one long ago and just got the HD collection. What do difficulty settings in MGS2 do, anything meaningful or just shit like boss health bars?

That's nice.

Item placement and whether they can respawn, enemies are smarter and do more damage, generally more limited ammunition, more enemies in some segments, longer/more arduous torture sequences, etc. Also, IIRC an Alert is an automatic game over on the European Extreme difficulty.

It starts you off with less items, changes soem guard locations I think, and also the enemy health shit. MGS2 is already a pretty challenging game and has some hard bosses, so I'd say stick with Normal.
