What entries do you consider to be part of the 'core' Mario series?
What entries do you consider to be part of the 'core' Mario series?
64 maybe
2D and 3D Mario games are part of core Mario series, named Super Mario.
Any game that's a platformer. Excluding fringe examples like Super Paper Mario
The ones that have "Super Mario" in the title and are platform games. Donkey Kong and Mario Bros are canon, but I'd say the "core" series is the Super Mario series.
So the Land series is included? What about Super Mario Run? I'm planning out a playthrough.
Pretty much any game that isn't Doctor Mario, the ones involving Donkey Kong(Jr), the sport games or Mario Party.
So yes I consider Super Princess Peach and Luigi's Mansion to be core Mario.
Yes. They hold the same gameplay, so they are part of core.
Yes, SMR too, despite having some differences.
Those have got to be spin-offs.
Is there even a story in these games? It even seems like the world is different in each game, just look at princess peach's castle and the area around it.
All the "Super Mario" games. There are some that at first seem nonsensical to include, but they should also be included. These are: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land, and every New Super Mario Bros. game, including New Super Luigi U.
>SMR
I disagree, it's a runner, not a platformer.
>Super Mario Run
No, that's a runner game. It's similar but not the same as a platformer.
SPP could possibly be considered core because it's a platformer, but Luigi's mansion is not.
Yes, but there's not much going in in it because these games aren't very plot-heavy. There's certain events that impact later games in the series, like the appearance of Bowser Jr. And there's a couple games that tell the backstories of certain characters, like Super Mario World 2 and Super Mario Galaxy.
I'm including Luigi's Mansion because it's a unique IP that is only linked to Mario.
SPP is a Peach game, not a Mario game. Same reason why you souldn't count Mario Land 3 nor Mario World 2 either because they're Wario and Yoshi games respectively.
>that is only linked to Mario.
It's a Luigi game and it's not a platformer.
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2 (JP) / Lost Levels
Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA) / Doki Doki Panic
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Land
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
Super Mario World
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
New Super Mario Bros.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
New Super Mario Bros. 2
New Super Mario Bros. U
Super Mario 3D Land
Super Mario 3D World
The ones that follow the established canon of Shiggy the Godfather of Gaming Miyamoto. So:
SMB1, 3, World, Yoshi's Island, 64, Mario Kart 64, Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Galaxy 2
>B-B-BUT MUH KOIZUMI!!!
Koizumi wanted Mario to speak and say "Where's my mommy" at one point before Miyamoto cockblocked him. Shut up. You know nothing about Mario.
Mario Bros 1 and 3, World, 64, Galaxy.
>Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
See:
I swear I've seen this same thread before with the exact same discussions about Mario runner and platformers. hm
>Mario Bros 1-3 and World
>64, Sunshine
>Galaxy 1 and 2
>3D Land and World
>NSMB 1, 2, Wii, U, and Luigi
>Mario Maker technically
Yoshi's Island is a Yoshi game and its own separate thing, Mario Land is a handheld spin-off and prequel to the Wario series, the All Star/Advance remakes are canon but 64 DS is not due to the differences, Run is a mobile spin-off much like Land.
Though the core Mario series may share bits and pieces of canon with Yoshi, Wario, Donkey Kong, and other various spin-offs, they're all separate from the core itself.
The absolute must plays are
>2D
SMB3, SMW, NSMB, NSMBU
>3D
64, Sunshine, Galaxy/2.
psst
the only people that had a mommy in Galaxy were Lumas
Miyamoto is just an idiot
Ok
There's sidestories, but little. They are there as a plus, and were never the main attraction.
>It even seems like the world is different in each game
Mario's world is heavily inconsistent. Mario's house constantly changes between games, Toad's cities/villages and Bowser's castle also changes completely. The devs. never really cared any of that. The only thing that looks like it has been consistent is Peach's castle.
No, you're an edgy retard. Why the fuck would you ever put something so dark in a fucking Mario racing game?
There's a message block in the first Yoshi's Island game that implies the Super Mario team worked on it. Therefore, it is a Super Mario game.
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
That's it.
You probably think Sunshine is the best one
So what? You play as Yoshis, the gameplay has nothing to do with Mario games, it's a completely different game. It's not a Mario game.
Super Mario Bros
SMB 2
SMB 3
SMW
NSMB
NSMB Wii
NSMB 2
NSMB U
3D will never be a part of mainline mario.
It's still a Mario game.
Being made by the same people and being part of the same canon doesn't necessarily mean they're part of the same series
1985 Super Mario Bros.
1990 Super Mario World
1996 Super Mario 64
2002 Super Mario Sunshine
2007 Super Mario Galaxy
Probably:
2017 Super Mario Switch
Peach is the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom.
Bowser is the king of the Dark World / World 8 / World Bowser / whatever. Basically, a place outside of the Mushroom Kingdom.
Bowser kidnaps Peach a lot. What does he do? We don't know. Bowser probably forces her to play Monopoly with her or some shit.
Mario and Luigi are brothers. They go rescue Peach whenever she gets kidnapped.
While you would think they would be enemies, they all make sure to team up when a bigger evil comes around, or if they just want to go kart or play sports.
The worlds slightly differ from game to game, but it's all similar places and plotlines.
Sure, but not a core Mario game.
2D
1,3,World
3D
64,Sunshine, Galaxy 1/2
RPG
thousand year door and superstar saga
spinoffs
yoshi's island, luigi's mansion
objectively best list
The full title is "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island". Notice the "Super Mario" at the beginning of the title. This means it's a main "Super Mario" game. You may not like it, but it's the truth.
And the full title of Wario Land is "Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3" is that a Mario game too? Of course not, don't be ridiculous. The name is just there for marketing purposes, but it's a Wario game, just like MW2 is a Yoshi game and not a core Mario game.
What defines a core Mario game is:
1. Mario is the main playable character
2. It's a platformer.
Nah, he wanted Mario to say it, as Miyamoto specifies that he can't because that's not something the player would ever say.
>edgy retard
I'm the OP of post he's responding to. What the hell are you even talking about pot calling kettle dumbass?
3, World, Land 2, the Galaxies, and 3D World. You might as well beat the original too since it only takes an hour.
a buddy of mine and I are going though the console Mario games in order. This includes both 2D and 3D Mario platformers games. In order:
Super Mario Bros 1-3
Super Mario World
Yoshi's Island (because it has Mario World 2 in the title)
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Galaxies 1 and 2
New Super Mario Bros Wii and U
Super Mario 3D World
Oh, yeah, sure, he wanted Mario to talk about his mommy in a game with absolutely no plot involvement of Mario's parents whatsoever
Meanwhile the Lumas constantly talk about how Rosalina is their mommy in Galaxy 1
Get your head screwed on right
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island strongly implied that Mario and Luigi were born to fairly normal people.
He's not Link, he's not destined for greatness. He's just an overweight plumber who's forced to solve problems he'd rather not involve himself with.
I was going to joke saying that only the ones with Waluigi count but then i realized that i've never seen him in a proper Mario game.
Is this right? Has he exclusively appeared on spin-offs and shit?
I'd say the progression of "main series" from Super Mario Bros onwards would be:
>Super Mario Bros
>Super Mario Bros 2/US
>Super Mario: Lost Levels
>Super Mario Bros 3
>Super Mario World
>Super Mario World: Yoshi's Island (The other Yoshi games are their own series)
>Super Mario 64
>Super Mario Sunshine
>Super Mario Galaxy 1
>Super Mario Galaxy 2
>Super Mario 3D Land
>Super Mario 3D World
>Super Mario Switch
I see the other games are all branches from the core series.
Yep. Now he has a legit chance though, since he's a meme character and the Frenchies are developing that new Mario vs Rabbids RPG.
smb 1-3, super mario world, 64, sunshine, gay, gay 2, 3d world
SMB
SMB3
64
Not him but he's right. The Mario Galaxy we played is different to what Koizumi was going to give us. Miyamoto took action because he didn't feel comfortable with Mario saying stuff like "Where'd my mommy go".
A lot of people like to shit on Miyamoto's approach but he very likely averted Galaxy from having the same kind of awkward cutscenes Sunshine had.
>"Where'd my mommy go".
That'd be orders of magnitude weirder than anything in Sunshine.
To be honest, I never thought how Sunshine's cutscenes were weird or cringe, until the Bowser's ones popped out, because he talks.
'core' just means what one considers essential and this is subjective
any game can be considered a core mario game that's in the mario universe. there's no rules to this shit. quit being faggots and just recommend the best mario games.
you're also a bunch of faggots for no one mentioning smrpg
