I don't get it. You're upset that they didn't Americanize "it can't be helped" and "as expected of x"? Both phrases are extremely common in everyday Japanese speech so it makes sense that Japanese characters would use them.

A localization is supposed to let you enjoy the original work in your language, not teach you fucking Japanese. Literal translations are unprofessional and a chore to read through.

It isn't teaching you Japanese, not a single line is in Japanese. Also the meaning is perfectly clear for anyone who can read English and isn't retarded.

Yeah I agree that the DR games have some stunted translations in places, especially in SDR2 when some lines of dialogue aren't even placed correctly in the text boxes and go off the screen, but the two that were posted are fine.

The guy responsible for translating MGS1 added a lot of military acronyms and terms that weren't in the original script at all, to make the game better accessible to westerners who might be more comfortable with Roland Emmerich action shlock jargon, to the point where if you replay the games now it arguably stands out compared to later games.
So I guess what I'm saying is; would you rather have the dialogue stick strictly to the creator's vision even if it alienates some with concepts or phrases that culturally don't translate, or would you rather sacrifice that for the sake of marketability?
Translation is a tricky thing I'm sure and something I've often wondered about, especially for literature, where a line has to be walked between literal translation, or making adjustments for the sake of legibility.

No but the Japanese do speak using phrases that have been ingrained into their dialect and reflects a large part of their cultural outlook and way of thinking.

As a writer, I'd want as many people as possible to enjoy my work, and would be okay with a few things getting changed to accommodate cultural differences and the like. Of course, changing the message of my hypothetical work would be a big no-no.

You say that as if Kojima wasn't fine with the localization. It wasn't even the last time either. Also, 'literal translation' isn't sticking with the creator's vision because if the words flow and make sense in Japanese, there's no reason why they shouldn't in English either.

Because that's pretty much the only good thing about NISA. 99% of the time they make sure the stuff they localize has dual audio.
