So this game is $5 right now on sale, I'm interested, but I'm not 100% on what type of game this is. I've heard it's similar to Diablo, like grim dawn is. I just bought grim dawn and I'm figuring if it's fairly similar I shouldn't bother getting it just yet so I don't get burnt out.
Could a kind user quickly describe what kind of game this is? I can't seem to find an actual answer

As such, it's inferior to Grim Dawn since GD improved from TQ in a lot of ways.
You should play TQ before GD if you want to appreciate it more.

It simply has worse mechanics than Grim Dawn.
The reason is that you will be going from a good game to great game instead of downgrading from a great game to a good game.

Graphics-wise, Titan Quest actually held up really good for a 10 year old game. And thankfully WoW hadn't taken a firm dominating hold of the industry yet so you didn't have the WoW/Torchlight aesthetic ruining everything like it did with Diablo 3.
Like, compare TQ to PoE. TQ is actually crisp and varied colors, where PoE is just muddy brown and not really very remarkable wallowing in that sweet, sweet Diablo2 aesthetic.
Gameplay isn't that bad, but yeah it got dinged a lot for making you use something like 64 skills points into just pushing your Skill Mastery bar up which did nothing but provide passive stat bonuses instead of giving you wham, pow, something awesome happened!
