Whenever I go out of town I charge mine with a usb cable and my cellphone's charger, it works just okay. Just don't get the cheapest one because after all, the quality of the wires does matter, it could set your house on fire and in the worst case scenario, it might take longer to charge your 3ds.

I just got the $4 one from gamestop that charges the 3ds and the regular ds, works fine for both.
