I've been wondering about something. MGS V is an amazing game. The working conditions and Konami's bullshit has made the game into someting "incomplete" but while actually playing the game GZ and TPP back to back, without knowing ANYTHING beforehand, it was an amazing fucking experience. Best gaming experience I've ever had. Many things like ho the ending was handled were weird but only AFTER finishing. First the ending just came out of thin air because I was not expecting it to even happen. And that also felt fantastic. It took me over 100 hours the first time and it was fucking tense, felt amazing and I think I had zero seconds of boredom.
Only after playing the game, I looked things up online. Oh the shitposting. I also watched the trailers for the first time. They were very emotional but really spoilerific. I can't understand why they were released. I felt so fucking bad for anyone who ever watched any of them.
Then I checked the theories. A lot of fun stuff I think but they also build up expectations. I understand many of the problems, I now know the game was unfinished. But it's amazing how much it DIDN'T FEEL UNFINISHED. That's an amazing feet on KojiPros part.
You have to understand the situation the game was made in and how much you are ruining your own experience with the internet and the marketing material. Think about the theory of Venom being Medic. It was around for like a year. In the end, it wasn't even true. The twist is that Venom is you. And that's fucking powerful. No one saw that coming. But I understand how thinking about it for a YEAR can ruin it for you (although it came about by cheating. It was conceived from hacking the gaming and checking out the assets. It was actually concealed well in the game). I'm sure people like that felt fucking cheated. But it's your own fault. We are living a sad world where consoles are dragging technology and the internet is ruining stories. And I guess nothing can be done about that.
Levi Morgan
I didn't watch and read about anything till both games came out. The reviews and discussions feel like people are ruining their own experiences for every game they play. I guess it's hard to not do that? This game was one of the best ever and I've also found the controversy to be very interesting. Many discussions about how the game could be better made me think like "hey, it would be awesome if it was like that!". But just think about the creative process at KojiPro. It's almost impossible for us to think of something they haven't discussed during development. You write a 1000 pages to create 100 good pages. There are reasons for the game being like this and Konami is one reason. No one at KojiPro is perfect but they also made an amazing game while being treated like fucking prisoners. It's mindboggling. A lesser team would have been crushed by such a burden.
Many of the theories were created by cheating. The Medic=Venom theory was conceived from hacking the gaming and checking out the assets. It was actually concealed well in the game. Hundreds of theories were false. Some were true. Some were more interesting than the stuff we got. But wouldn't you really have more fun without reading such bullshit? Of course if you have 5 years to think about something, you will probably guess many things correctly. It's just how the world works, how collective intelligence works. You know if you have ja jar with 6835 peas inside, if you ask a thousand people to guess the number, you'll get stuff like 100 or 10000 peas but the average of all the guesses will be very close to the truth. That's just how peoples minds work. It's not magic.

This might not be the right place to post this at all. I just kind of feel bad for Kojima and the team for all of the shittalk and I also feel bad for players for ruining their own experience. Are people enjoying it? Maybe the rage and hatred is fun? But I just kind of think that people are a bit harsh on this. Like you probably made mistakes in your job at some points and you would probably be pretty annoyed if there were a gazillion Sup Forums posts about how that makes you the worst person ever. I just hoped people would enjoy things for what they are and try to see the good and try to learn from the bad. This game was thematically better made than most games ever made and the gameplay was really fun. Even with it's problems and cringy moments. It was just a weird experience to play the game and emerge into the internet community to see so many people with the exact opposite of my experience and it truly seems like that would not have happened if for example there were no trailers released or if GZ was not released beforehand. I could be wrong and my taste in games could be shitty. But that's just how I feel.
Whatever, discuss or disregard. Had to get this out of my system.

>page 9 >I didn't watch and read about anything till both games came out. The reviews and discussions feel like people are ruining their own experiences for every game they play. It's called being hyped. People get too excited for a game and raise their expectations too high only to find the game couldn't reach it. It was an interesting read, I'll give you that op.
Joshua Gray
nah the game was shit and your opinion is shit

Venom is literally the medic. Figuratively he is you, but he is literally the medic. Those people were absolutely right.

>your opinion is shit Nice opinion user ;^)

never post again
Evan Clark
Thanks. And I just think that pushes the fault at the marketing team and developers should really try to misdirect in the trailers, like MGS2 did. Not sure what went wrong in V.
Just saying that's not the twist, nor in any way an interesting part in the story. I would have been ok if it was left vague and there was no "medic" in the game at all. But you are still missing the point if you think "Venom is the medic". Sure.

Guys, I'm crying right now.
Just looking at him makes me feel something strange inside. I guess you could call it "love". I'm in love with Big Boss. I've lost interest in all guys, besides him. Guys who are considered "hot" by the general female population don't cut it for me anymore.
Big Boss really is all I think about all day, every day. I really do cry myself to sleep at night thinking about how I'll never be with him. If only he knew I existed in this life, if only he knew my deep profound love for him. I know that will never happen though. That is the thought that makes me so sad when I look at him. I'll never be with him, but I'll continue to love him until the day I die.

This is not the right forum for people seeing the good even in the bad, the huge majority of this forum's posters are insanely negative and refuse to deviate from the opinions they've already formed.
But despite all the games flaws, it does do tons of really impressive things, and we also can't really say how much more shocking the game would've been without 2015's internet culture. Nothing gets away without being spoiled nowadays, you have to purposely try to avoid things which is hard if you go to any vidya forums.
I avoided as many spoilers as possible then went to Sup Forums and accidently clicked on a 24 thread and someone posted the ending to the game.
I think it'll have that mgs2 hindsight is 20/20 thing in a couple of years. people will get nostalgiac and realize despite all the issues the game had, it does tell a cool story about fighting globalism with 1984/moby dick motif's thrown in. A lot of people haven't realize this game is very much a spin off that tries to throw in a bit of relation to the canon, kojima has implied it himself on twitter.
Ayden Barnes
Think about it this way, Venom knew all of this and didn't care.
Jason Campbell
>The working conditions and Konami's bullshit has made the game into someting "incomplete"
Kojima certainly shares equal blame for it turning out as it did.
James Ward
Have you played the previous games in the series OP?
Zachary Wood
Maybe, maybe not. But based on pretty much every interview and everyone who has ever met the guy (mind you, none of us have ever met him and know nothing about him) he is very smart and sincere and works hard to make the best game possible while being very tired of the series. Just based on that and by knowing how Konami executives don't have much understanding of video games and simply think of the financial stuff (this also based on multiple sources, not just random blabbering on the internet) I'm pretty sure Kojima didn't want the game to end up like this and did what he can. Like for a gamer it feels like we have been cheated and lied to but it's not like the creative team wants to announce features and tell us about the amazing things they have planned and then down the line understand how they can't be made. Sucks for both parties. So I think the blame on Konami is about money and resurce management and the blame on Kojima is more about wanting to do something and failing to do that. That's still sincere effort at trying to break the boundaries of an industry. Admirable if you ask me.
Yes, all of them since MGS 1 came out.
Gavin Barnes
Like clockwork.

The truth is always on point.

>expecting good things is the player's fault >expecting good things from a developer AND a series with stellar track records is the player's fault

You can survive a shot to the head, but a broken heart always kills.

>That's an amazing feet on KojiPros part. You fucked it up
Ethan Butler
Big Boss approved.
Leo Cook
>The Medic=Venom theory was conceived from hacking the gaming and checking out the assets No, it wasn't. It was conceived from the jarringly conspicuous concealment of the medic's face in the GZ cutscenes, and the "What about him?" line in the GZ trailers. You'd know this if you'd taken part in the discussion as it happened. But I guess it's a lot nicer to pretend you know what you're talking about just because you googled some bullet points years after the fact, and also having the smug self assurance of hindsight.
Ryan Collins
Also because Medic was voiced by Keif in GZ
Nicholas Kelly
>"It's Konami's fault that Kojima had FIVE (5) YEARS and millions & millions of dollars to work on the game, but it still turned out to be unfinished."
Fuck off.
Benjamin Martin
Not really sure if anyone can have a reasonable discussion here, but whatever, here goes. Maybe some are interested.
It's not the players fault. Many players expected it to be good, some were disappointed, others not. That's normal. I'm wondering about where the disappointment comes from. Whether you like or dislike something might have nothing to do with some "objective reality". Sometimes you hate something and love it later or vice versa. You might have a bad day or your expectations might fuck your experience up. I thought MGS2 was the worst in the series till I played it again after 10 years. The meantime I played all the others like five times. Think that's pretty normal and it was kind of my fault for being a judgemental asshole based on one playthrough. What I'm saying here is how easy it is to screw up your own personal enjoyment with overanalysing and listening to other people.
Charles Ross
I ain't reading all this shit cause you're just blaming me for being mad I was expecting a game that didn't rehash the same missions during the second half as obvious padding for unfinished content.
Chase Murphy
Not trying to be smug. Well they did download the voice file and pitch it up to find out about Keifer. And just listen to yourself. How does any of that actually confirm some amazing plot twist? Medic could have been grayfox or whatever, "what about him" could have been about Chico. It was through datamining the medics face and finding out how much it resembles Solid Snake that finally started the rumor. And even then I'm still talking about how such rumors create the idea at the end of the game that "what the fuck, we were right! It is the medic" while you should be thinking about Venom being a representation of the player. It screws up with your mind, you can't really deny that. And if GZ and TPP were part of the same package, you would not for one second during the game think about the medic. Maybe someone would. But I'm still talking about how people had years to wonder about that shit.
Yep, that simple it is. Well I think it sucks that they had to make the Fox Engine too. The game would have probably been more complete if they had used an existing engine. Not sure whose fault that is. Also it's not like the amount of years and money is not shown in the final game. It's fucking polished as fuck and looks great.
Nathan Campbell
Not blaming you. During those missions I actually started wondering about why we are playing these again. I thought maybe it's about some kind of hypnosis on Venoms part. Like we are slowly playing through the same missions with minor changes until we actually find out the truth about some events that were screwed in Venoms mind through Mantis' hypnosis. Not that far from the truth to be honest but I loved guessing it. In hindsight I know that it is padding but it doesn't really take away the hours of fun I had guessing stuff during the game. And the missions are also great anyway.
Aiden Edwards
basically anyone who says "MGSV wuz shit lol" or thinks it's bad or didn't enjoy it is a contrarian edgelord
Nathan Morgan
>people watch the trailers and gameplay demos >people want more of what they saw in those videos >turns out almost every cutscene in the game was in the trailers, a lot of the "cooler" lines of dialogue that sounded like they'd be in some cool cutscene were relegated to cassette tapes or just sounded worse in context, and most if not all of the mechanics were shown off in the gameplay demos, and both maps were also shown off in the demos, leaving very little left to be surprised by >the big 3 characters in the game, Venom, Ocelot, and Miller, don't have much development in the game, and most tapes they interact in are expositional >Quiet goes through a character arc I guess, but I don't think it's that well done, and the ""romance"" stuff between her and Venom seems awkward and forced >Code Talker is just there to explain plot points and plot items later in the game. Also hamburgers >Huey is probably the only interesting character of the bunch, but he doesn't do enough after you rescue him. He builds you that useless quadraped walker gear, though >Afghanistan and Africa are pretty empty and barren and the side missions sprinkled in them between main mission points are really repetitive and lack the fun PW and GZ had with some of their side ops. >game is structured in chapters even though it only has 2, with one of them being noticeably unfinished >very few boss fights, and what's there is generally uninteresting >Story missions often provide very little story >story loses a lot of focus after Skullface is gone >Skullface is also pretty uninteresting as a villain. Not around long enough to make an impact on people except through dumb memes >story threads like Huey, Quiet, Eli, and Volgin are all quickly and unsatisfyingly tied up in Chapter 2 >Big Boss/Venom twist is quickly thrown in at the end of Chapter 2, even though everyone already knew from moment 0 because Kojima made it way too obvious The game would have benefited from being smaller and more concise
Jeremiah Cruz
Yeah, they showed too much. I didn't know beforehand cause I didn't watch them. Pretty much everyone would have had better time finding out stuff on their own. That's also what I'm saying. I have no idea why they chose to show every fucking thing.
Bosses were pretty lackluster except a couple but even those weren't exactly on par with previous games. But I do kind of disagree with the story stuff. I have no idea how to better show the the arcs of these characters especially in contrast to the other games.
We see Ocelot when he is not chasing the love of his life, Big Boss. He's more like a guy at work, not the megalomaniacal showman. It was fucking weird but made sense the second the ending came up.
Miller from Peace Walker to killing Skullface, thats' fucking amazing story arc.
Quiet was interesting, not perfectly made but a full story for a new character and it did carry emotional weight. Rain dancing was cringy but come on, it had the John Woo pigeons and whatnot, it was cheesy by design.
Code Talker was a plot-device.
Huey was fucking amazing with his madness and sense of right and wrong. Also it was interestingly made a bit vague like how mad he was or was he at all. His PTSD from GZ was very well made.
Venom as a man-made Big Boss was great. He was slowly assuming the role of Big Boss. It was a full arc of something where you don't even know what his arc is before the end of the game when it makes sense. His confusion throughout the whole game is amazingly done cause you don't really know why he goes in and out of being Big Boss and from being this weird stiff guy who has no idea what his doing.
The game made Big Boss into what Zero was and that was fucking great. The guy who works in the shadows, manipulating others to do his dirty work, controlling money and resources through proxy. There would have not been a better way to show his descent into "evil". Zero was also well presented in the game, although I wish we had a cutscene of him.
