Is it a mario game?

Is it a mario game?

Is Donkey Kong Country a Mario game?

Why wouldn't it be?

>You don't play as Mario
>Said Mario doesn't even show up until the very end and even then just for a few seconds

What do you think?

the first vidya game i ever played

exquisitely designed

I remember every level

I still remember the "cheat" input to give yourself infinite lives/score/power up. Fun times.

game is pretty unforgiving without cheats

Sure. Same way Yoshi's Island is

Dr. Wily vs Captain Syrup

Yeah. Wario just stole it.

Was one of my favorite Gameboy games, but never played the following Wario Land games. Are they any better?

Wario Land 4 is probably my favorite GBA game of all time.
God tier controls, visuals and music.

No, it's a Wario game.

So not at all? Gotcha.

Takes place in the Mario canon.

Warioland 2.

You are invincible. There are no powerups. There's no timer. There's no LIVES. The game focuses more on exploration and puzzle solving rather than fighting. Unlike the first Wario game you don't want to have to worry about having to make it to a certain point of the level with a certain power up to get a treasure. Default Wario has the super shoulder charge that breaks multiple bricks in one shit. Wario can butt stomp.

So does Wario even exist in Mario's world anymore? Awazon Basin? Wario driving to Mexico to plunder a Mayan temple? Diamond City?

None of this stuff really screams Mushroom Kingdom.

Wario could butt stomp back in 1. You just needed to get the horned helmet.

The Mushroom Kingdom is just that, a Kingdom. Actual worlds are huge, you know?

Everything in Mushroom Kingdom has eyes. The rest of the world is somewhat normal. Then you have Diamond City which is pretty normal.

NAH, it's a Wario game.

no but Donkey Kong is and so is OPs pic.

there was a lot if heated autism in that 'core' mario game thread earlier. guess one of you got so ass blasted you're still thinking about it and made another thread kek.

oh my god

this whole time I thought Six Golden Coins was "Warioland 1" as a sort of joke that Wario was trying to take over like in the game, I didn't know that Warioland 1 was actually the game directly after it

might as well throw myself off a bridge now

Every two Wario Land games changed up the formula in some way.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 and Virtual Boy Wario Land both had carryovers from the Mario games preceding it. Lots of the hat powerups, Wario getting hit would turn him into a smaller, weaker version of himself, and exploration in stages wasn't quite as big of a focus as the later games.

Wario Land II and Wario Land 3 both made it so that Wario no longer takes damage when getting hit. There's no way to die in either game, with WL2 only taking away some of your coins when you get hit and WL3 not even doing that much. The games have a massive emphasis on exploration, with a ton of alternate routes and levels to stumble upon in 2 and a huge map in 3 that had you going back to previous levels with newly discovered items/abilities to enter new areas in each one of them. Platforming was a bigger focus here as well, with enemies being placed in ways that would knock you off of platforms. Instead of hat power ups, getting attacked by certain enemies or environmental hazards would change Wario's state, allowing you to solve puzzles or platform better.

Wario Land 4 and Shake It! made Wario vulnerable again, this time with a life bar. Less of an emphasis on exploration and more on fast paced platforming and action, with every stage ending with you having to run all the way back to the start at lightning speed before time runs out. Since enemies could kill you again, these games had less emphasis on transformations, though a few of them still remained. These two are the fastest paced of the games.

Then you have Wario World, the only 3D game, which was less of a platformer and more of a "beat the crap out of everything around you with wrestling moves". It's a great action game, but extremely short.

Master of Disguise is underwhelming. Feel free to skip that, one way or another.
