Now that the dust has settled...what's Sup Forums's opinion?
very very good game, despite it's flaws
a must play for anyone
Story: good
Music: good
Gameplay: playable
Music: good
everything else: average at best, terrible most of the time
the story is so fucking overrated
Legit best review I have ever seen.
Never played it but I'm excited for Automata
Nier can be kind of a mess, with a lot of filler and fluff, and it's obvious that aspects of it were cut down before release, but the actual combat is adequate and the overall atmosphere, music, and final impact of the story make for it.
Genuinely glad I played it. But hated that I was a completionist about it.
I think people kind of overstate it's flaws. The combat was hardly excruciating or boring, it just wasn't particularly remarkable (granted, it also felt like there was no reason that it couldn't/shouldn't have been better).
Apart from that, rather than an "identity crisis," it felt to me that it was really just creating new perspectives on the same thing, which meant it was constantly new and different yet cohesive. That is, rather than annoying unrelated minigames (e.g. the motorcycle and bullet in Bayonetta), they melded well by applying the same mechanics in different ways, so I thought it was always cool whenever it switched to something like 2D, top-down, isometric, or RE-style camera work.
The story, soundtrack, atmospheres, etc. secondary characteristics were undeniably the main draw, but I feel it would still be a fun game without them (for the first playthrough at any rate)
I thought the combat was fine really. It just wasn't varied enough to carry the hours of grinding that are necessary if you care about completing any of the side-quests.
Starts to grate once you've realized how many times it wants you to go back and forth through that junk heap battering down the same handful of enemies for the right piece of scrap.
>Never played it
There's still time user
Pretty much the old Sup Forums opinion. I don't understand how people like the story when it's so forced.
The writing and story are solid, especially character dialogue. Combine it with "Grimoire Nier" and it has some great lore, too.
The gameplay = standard action rpg stuff. The overall performance, lack of balance and lack of enemy variety just make it seem more sucky than it actually is. Some spells are fun, some bosses are good and the genre mixing keeps it somewhat interesting. Overall not bad, but definitely has problems.
The music is amazing.
The visuals make it look like a high PS2 game/low PS3 game.
I personally love it and would give it an 9/10, but objectively it's like a 6.5 or 7 at most as a game. Definitely worth checking out, at least. It's a unique experience.
It felt like it lacked proper direction at a lot of parts which could've elevated the sidestories or cutscenes to have a much higher impact. The right ingredients are all there, they just aren't used in the most optimal way, they aren't as fleshed out enough to be absolutely compelling. Most of the time I opted to simply ignore the flaws as they didn't impact my enjoyment too much but it still makes you wonder what could've been.
I usually describe Nier the same way I described my time with Gravity Rush.
A lot of the individual elements are flawed, but there's a sort of, charm and creativity to things that makes the game feel like more than the sum of its parts. You can tell there's passion behind it, and it shines through the imperfections.
The real question is: Nier Gestalt or Nier Replicant?
Daddy Nier is the better character but its written like Nii-chan Nier which kinda sucks.
Daddy > Fuckboi
>Gestalt or Replicant
I've seen people make an interesting argument for how young Nier shows a more definitive change in his character development during the time skip, but I'm more attached to Pappa Nier.
I thought it was nice change of pace to play an jrpg as a grizzled yet kind-hearted father figure, as opposed to the standard awkward pretty boy.
Ending C is the worst ending. You can't disprove me.
>still makes you wonder what could've been.
Cut out that damn seed hybrid quest and give me a fishing map that doesn't require the internet and I would have been happier in every regard.
overrated on Sup Forums underrated everywhere else
I thought Ending C made the most sense for Daddy Nier. Granted, I was still bitter that Kaine was the only one of Nier's crew I could sacrifice myself for when she was like, my sixth best friend at best.
I agree, but the kiss suited Brother Nier more in my opinion.
Yeah, I saw Pappa Nier as a father figure to everyone in his group rather than a romantic interest. Brother Nier and Kaine had more of a love-hate sado-maso thing going on.
Gameplay is fun for a while but is just flat out boring later. Music is fantastic. Story was pretty good, jaw dropping plot twist for me personally. A good few moments where I had to just pause and process what was happening. First time I've ever stopped a boss fight to read in game documents
Overall I liked it a lot. NG+ bonus dialogue was really well done
Is there a reason why the 360 version of this is more expensive? Does the ps3 version just not run well?
Feminine dicks.
I loathed the fishing side-quests. But the final outcome of it hit me harder than it should have.
How much is the ps3 version? I got a 360 version got 8 bucks at fucking gamestop
I gave up on the fishing quests. What happens?
>Want to play it
>No digital version
>Have to spend 20 bucks for it because people think thats what its worth
Gonna still get it but fuck do I hate this jewery.
Spoilt the twist about the Shadowlord but I'm not sure how it would even be possible without Time Travel or Id from Xenogears hijinx.
the only jew here is (you)
Unga Bunga Rockstop has the 360 version at 9.99, the ps3 version is 17.99
Story: Top-notch
Music: Top-notch
Setting: Really subjective but I love the post-post-apocalyptic concept.
Characters: Great, lots of hidden depth
Gameplay: Some good boss fights but otherwise the gameplay is serviceable yet uninspired.
It's on my 3x3 I love it so much. I can't wait for the sequel.
The old man teaching you sends you out to capture the fish that he never could. When you finally do, you bring it back to him at Seafront only to find out that he died from an old war wound while you were away. The old man was a mercenary, that apparently did a lot of harsh things in his youth during times of conflict, and everyone avoided him because of it.
He had no friends or family, but he was happy to have spent time fishing with Nier during his final days.
Anyone else feel like some of the tragedy in NG+ is a little cheap?
The part that sticks out to me the most is about Kalil and Beepy. Its a touching and sad story but I cant help but feel that its kind of cheap. It feels like the game is trying to make you feel bad for something that you couldnt stop and isnt your fault.
It's been awhile since I played but I'm pretty sure (HEAVY SPOILERS) Shadowlord is the original Nier, albeit in a spirit form. The Nier you play as is an artificial husk intended to be a future host for the spirit Nier once the Earth can be repopulated by real humans.
You DID tell the lighthouse lady the truth, right?
>Sup Forums likes 10 year old weeb game literally no one's ever heard of with 0 marketing
But of course.
> the Nier you play as is an artificial husk intended to be a future host for the spirit Nier once the Earth can be repopulated by real humans.
That didn't go too well now did it?
>Nier
>10 years old
n-nani?
>2010 was 10 years ago
Wow... I feel so old
Shit, my bad dog, I meant 8 or 9 years *shrug*
Iirc, [spoilers]all the "humans" Nier interacts with over the course of the game are the husks of real people or straight-up AI's. Those "humans" started developing consciousnesses and souls of their own while the real human spirits started going feral and attacking them. Shadowlord's motivation is literally to reunite the body and soul of his daughter.[/spoiler]
I thought the Beepy subplot fit thematically him and Kalil are practically the most innocent characters in the whole story, and the failure to communicate fuels how pointless the vengeance is, similar to how futile and terrible Nier's attempts to slaughter all shades turns out to be.
If there was any part of NG+ that I felt was a little forced it was the fight with Gretel. It's a big bombshell, that the shades are capable of communicating, but the fact you bust in right after his huge power-of-friendship speech kind of made me chuckle at how overtly and blatantly tragic it was.
I hesitated at first, but I told Everyone the truth during that quest.
Good intentions or not, the people in town were pretty messed up trying to pull that shit. Keeping her waiting in the lighthouse all those years for someone who would never come? She could have moved on with her life, but never got the chance...
> the failure to communicate fuels how pointless the vengeance is
Personally, I felt the story of Roc told this story much better. I would even say that Arc might easily be the best part of story, barring the endings. The wolf's dying flashback of the old man who cared for him always gets me, it really great part.
"Thank you for being my friend."
It's 6 years old, but looking at the visuals it does seem a lot older.
The same thing seems to be applicable to Automata, the visuals look subpar for a 2017 game.
at what point does something looking "subpar for x year" stop being a thing because I look at nier and I only a see a pretty game.
I guess the wolves' story resonated with me a little less, because I loved those weirdos at Facade.
So I ended up feeling more pity for Fyra and the king, who had nothing to do with the initial slaughter of the wolves, than I did for Roc, who was continuing the cycle of violence.
Still a sad story from all perspectives though.
This.
For me it was how out of the blue that shit was. I was NOT used to that kind of a plot.
Might be reading too much into it, but I thought the beginning of Nier was supposed to feel forced?
Like as standard as a JRPG can get, with a power-of-friendship fueled protagonist, a scantily clad action girl, and the magical mascot characters, grouping up to beat the big bad "Shadow Lord" and save the world.
Only to subvert everything into a futile and melancholy quest in a decaying world, where every step of progress you take seems to ruin the lives of those everyone around you, only to end with you finding out that everything you had romanticized as a "Save the World" quest was a lie.
Song of the Ancients, take me away...
Wow, that's exactly how I feel. Let's be friends.
Sounds like a plan.
Automata could be glossier, but it looks plenty good to me.
What's your phone number?
Everything else apart from the buildings look fine.
Eh, I don't have texting.
How about a steam username? Mikejamese
op here nice seeing that i made two people becomes pals today :)
Nothing brings em together like finding a flicker of camaraderie over a flawed cult classic.
Is nier worth 40€? It's very pricey for an old game
If Automata becomes very well reviewed and turns out to be an even better game than the first, would the people still like it? It's a cult hit series that goes mainstream.
>wtf I hate nier now
Is what I expect.
