Shit, one might just as easily have argued that Light would have gotten away with it if he just killed everyone with a trickle of accidental deaths, like the corp did. The whole POINT was to have it be visibly obvious that mass killing was happening, because that's what sends the message.

If Mello hadn't kidnapped the reporter Light would have won. Near didn't know about the real hidden notebook and would have been btfo if not for that.

What happened was Mikami broke his autistic schedule while being tailed and used the real note to make the reporter off herself thinking Light couldn't do it while being so closely watched. At the same time Light solved the problem himself using a scrap of paper. He didn't notice Mikami had done anything because they both wrote the exact same thing.

Near didn't force mikami to do shit. If anyone forced mikami it was mello. Near assumed that the notebook mikami was using was the real notebook, he had giovanni replace the page that mikami would've used on the day of their meeting knowing that lights name wouldn't be written down essentially proving that light is kira.


Light however was one step ahead of near and knew this would happen so he had mikami send pages of the death note to takada to continue the killings that he was pretending to commit in the fake note book and to put the real note book in the bank, only to bring it out on the day of the meeting to kill all the SPK and the task force members.

Enter mello who fucks everything up by taking takada. Mikami thinking that light is unable to act takes the initiative and goes to the bank to kill her with the real note book. Giovanni who has been tailing mikami for the past few months realizes how strange it is for someone of such a strict routine to break it. Giovanni then breaks into the safe deposit, finds the real note book with takadas name in it and lets near know. Near then has giovanni replace the entire note book in one night, and take the real one, foiling lights plan.
