I honestly don't know how you old fuckers do it.

Playing on Chapter 2 level 5 and I'm getting lost and confused. Some of the level design is too complex for a 19 year old like me who's played too many modern games.

tell me how casual I am.

Play another game, DOOT is not for u. kys

this

>Chapter
Are you playing Freedoom

zdoom

>tfw playing Ultra-Violence E3M1
>low ammo the whole time
>beat level with a few shotgun shells and pistol ammo
>E3M2
>run out of ammo almost immediately
>have to fight 2 Demons barehanded at once with like 40 HP

I made it through but fuck the beginning of E3 and E4.

>tfw there are so many options in doom that you wonder if you really are getting the true experience

I'm probably in the minority but I enjoy thy flesh consumed.

There has never been a human being in this world who never got "lost" playing Doom for the very first time. There will always be some form of a head scratching moment for everyone no matter if it was 1993 or 2013. You are only a casual if you give up and let the game defeat you, but until then, getting "lost" in the Doom labyrinth is perfectly normal.

>doesn't know the difference between engines and game data

Are you playing Doom (from id software) or the community remake Freedoom (which calls its episodes "chapters")

He clearly meant Episode 2 Map 5.

Wait until you get to E4M2 ;)

No it's not a remake it's just doom.

anyways i can't find the yellow skull.

i'm only 18 and i beat all the episodes on this game on hurt me plenty when i was fucking 7 or 8 years old. (my dad was always showing me older games) get fucking good

I'm pretty sure Thy Flesh Consumed is considered the 2nd best episode by most people.

Just watch the videos. They will help you.

Okay go to the far end of the corridor where those two passages that meet at "no entry" signs are, there is a door hidden between them. You can sort of see it at the top left of the map in your screen shot.

>my dad was always showing me older games

shit you must've played suck the dick on get me hard mode plenty of times too.

babby's first non-linear shooting. don't come to /vr/.

>hmp

9YI23-WV6Y2-DHRMI-SPHH6-4XBL2

I sometimes play it when I am bummed often while drinking. It is also what I use to test gameplay mods.

don't summon him

I'm not OP and I beat it already user. E4 in general is anus-tier shitbaggery though.

Was E4 the one where it wanted you to backwards rocket jump with invincibility onto a platform or was that some secret in E3?

I never knew Rocket Jumping was even implemented outside of unintentional skips that is fucking bonkers

E3 secret exit.

It's my personal favorite episode. I love E1M8s music in E4M1. Hell, I think E1M8's music is the best in the game. Also, Into Sandy's City from Plutonia

youtube.com/watch?v=PkhCNx-8Qos&fmt=18

i found it thanks user. i wish there was screen reccording because i would show you some cool stuff

secret exit to e3m6 and you can strafe run it.

Id you're talking about warrens, you dont need to rocket jump for that

His bronyfaggotry is below 5%, you should be safe.

if*

Nice trolling you nigger, the exit is here but there is no exit holy fuck

Someone post a picture of a level from Descent II, just to be an obnoxious fucker. It'll be worth it.

I probably am. I think there was like a lava floor around the whole map and there were like 4 different buildings, one of which was like a green crypt or mausoleum. The part I'm talking about has like this raised ring of geometry around a teleporter and all the guides I saw said to rocket jump to it.

Yeah that's a fake exit.

You've got the key, now go back to where you came from, there's a chain of three locked doors of different color, the exit needs all three.

Does anyone even know what's wrong with this screenshot or is it just me?

the "true experience" used to be pushing the meaty button on your CRT, hearing that "KA-CHUNK" noise, waiting minutes to dial up on a brand new 14.4 modem then waiting a few more minutes for the match to set up, then hoping you wouldn't get disconnected mid-game

The point is, don't worry about the "true experience" because a lot of that comes from the time the game was released.

There's nothing "wrong" with it unless you think no-one should be playing with high resolution, widescreen, overlaid automap, and other modern source port features.

>not playing pistol start

>widescreen
>transparent automap
800x600 best

sup bitch
what difficulty you on

>gh resolution, widescreen, overlaid automap, and other modern source port features.

that's exactly why it's wrong , doom wasn't intended to be played like that

the one before the highest

Ultra Violence is the only way to play Doom

The only thing that alters the gameplay is the overlaid automap, and that alteration is so negligible it's like it has no effect at all. Being a Doom purist to this extent is just silly

i hope you play at 35 fps as well

Thanks guys , I finished the level. Almost got ambushed too.
is that the highest one?

Nah, Nightmare is the highest. Makes the enemies faster and they all respawn. The one before that is Ultra Violence

yeah I'm playing on UV then

Why isn't your ammo depleting when you fire?

Originally the highest skill was Ultra Violence but players found it too easy so in an update they added an extra skill level named Nightmare which was meant to be unplayable. It doesn't add more monsters but it makes them faster and they come back to life when killed.

just finished e2m3, im also playing for the first time and im also 19, and the level design is amazing, by far one of the best if not the best ive seen in a long time. should i play doom with mouse or is it meant to be played with keyboard only. quake is more fun with mouse+keyboard but doom feels easy.

well...yeah. i was a little kid. sure, i can do it on nightmare now, but i probably would have quit trying on UV or nightmare at the age of 7.

>but players found it too easy
This wa sbecuase the designers largely tested the maps playing from a pistol start (i.e. no weapons beside pistol + 50 bullets)

every level? or just the beginning?

every level
its way more fun that way imo cause finding secrets is actually relevant

Mouse was supported in the original game but feel free to play kb only for the challenge.
Every level

some weapons are mandatory to pick up though

What do you mean by "mandatory"? They're placed so that you can't avoid walking over them and picking them up?

Doom originally had mouse support but it was weird, moving the mouse forward or back would move the player forward or back, it makes precision movement a little harder. You can probably turn that on if it's not already if you want something more authentic. That said, mice weren't universally used until some years after Doom came out, so a lot of the really oldschool Doom players beat it using only the keyboard.

>tfw ultra casul
18yo youngfag, just beat E2M2. Kept running out of ammo as I navigated the maze of crates, shotgun shells were harder to find than I thought. It's at least nice that the game gives you the plasma rifle, rocket launcher, and chaingun all in a single level, though.

>artificial difficulty BS games/bullet hell shooters/other modern garbage
"GOTYAY THIS IS GREAT"
>actual fun, genuine difficulty games like Doom
"BAWWW OMG THIS IS TOO HARD FUCK THIS SHIT WHERE'S MY DANK SOULS GAME"

I could beat this game when I was 8.
You are less vidya-capable than an 8 year old.
Let that sink in newfag.

wait doom didn't use a mouse? were mice not invented yet?

>all these kids crying about doom 1 and 2 being hard while not pistol starting and using quicksaves

who are you quoting?

Mouse was optional.

I honestly can't do it anymore either, I don't know what happened. When I was 10 I breezed through Doom and never got lost, wasn't even aware of the map feature because I never even considered the need. These days whenever I replay old shooters in general I get fucking lost all the time and have to constantly reference maps, even then I'm still usually hopeless.

Mouselook wasn't a thing.
>Remember being afraid of the spider mastermind.
Nigger looked creepy as hell.

Doom didn't have z look, so mouselook wasn't as necessary. Doom is actually a 2D game.

What wads are people currently playing?

Pirate wad is my new favorite after Sup Forums.wad.

How do you reach the secret in the jew lair in Sup Forums.wad?

>19 year old me
triggered

>Doom is actually a 2D game
wut

Windows was optional back then. If you only used DOS command line you might not even have owned a mouse. Mice ownership was common but not universal.

>what is novert
It wasn't mouselook as we know it now (looking around in all directions) but you could move your mouse left and right to turn; moving up and down moved you forward and backwards, but the novert I mentioned was a program that removed that. And there was a program to rebind keys so you could do WSAD+ this limited mouselook. So yes, there kind of was.

They use map layers and other tricks to simulate the 3D map.

I should do a Tyson of E4M2 one day.

Episode 2 of Doom 1 is pretty maze-like and directionless. Most of the maps in that episode were designed by Tom Hall and were intended for a different type of game, probably something more RPG-ish since Doom was originally supposed to have NPCs and even multiple playable characters. On the other hand, Episode 1, while still many times more complex than modern FPS level design, is fast-paced and has a flow that a player can easily follow. If you want to play more levels like that, follow this user's advice and play Quake.

are E3 and 4 like that as well?

E3 is a bit more weird and puzzley than straight action.

E4 has its first two maps which are an infamous difficulty spike (the sixth is also hard but you have all weapons by that time), the rest is variable, in fact it was mostly made by third parties, it was a bonus addon you got for rebuying the game when it was rereleased in stores as THe Ultimate Doom, after Doom II came out. For this reason you can choose to stop playing at the end of E3 and do Doom II first, then come back to E4, as by that time you will be better prepared for the difficulty spike.

E3 to me is too mazelike and makes it frustrating at some points.

E4 is more like E1 except more shit on the screen and relies on your knowledge of engine exploits to complete at some points.

E3 is not as maze-like since only a couple of its maps were originally designed by Tom Hall, but Sandy Petersen's original work can lean towards being pretty maze-like as well.

E4 is pretty different. Hall and Petersen had no involvement in that episode. It's no longer maze-like like E2 and E3 were but they're pretty inconsistent in difficulty. Some maps are ball-bustingly hard while some are trivial.

Yea but looking up and down in games before any proper of 3d mapping was a pain in the ass.
Especially in build engine and the like.

any tips on how to git gud?

>can't even handle regular doom 1 and 2
lol, i made a slaughter .wad with over 30k enemies in 1 single map that took another speedrunner almost 3 hours to UV-MAX it. if you really are that casual maybe you should just stick to the trash you are used to.

pic unrelated, but is what my map looks like generally

practice a lot. then you can be like me and people will hate you and call you a liar every time you post anything.

Post it, I want to play it.

That's a lot of agitated skeletons.

wad-archive.com/wad/dea64cd00e22b78c80569995268c6df5

good luck, i have not met another human being that has UV-MAXed this map, including myself. the only completions I have seen are all TAS.

Oh, I've played that already. I figured it was either Holy Hell or that map. Are you ever going to work on it again, or is it as finished as it ever will be?

i might also add it's best to play the map using Boom. I've heard you can do it in gzdoom but I would still recommend Boom.

the only tip i can give you, learn how to kite and abuse monster infighting, you will never have enough ammo to kill everything. knowing when to shoot and when to kite is key

Yes, I ran it in PrBoom. ZDoom can't cope with anything over 3K active monsters or so.

to be honest, i'm not really a mapper. this is why i made a slaughter map, because it tests different skills of the player, namely combat related ones. i initially started work on it 5 years ago, just because i thought "what if someone made a map with more enemies than holyhell?"

so to answer your question, probably not. that version is how it will remain, even though i myself have had problems doing a UV-MAX completion, because the map was more of a joke and not a serious challenge i intended to overcome.
