Exactly why i only consider games that have both, a focus on a branching story, driven and affected by the players choices, and character progression through talents/abilities/items as an RPG. The genre used to be defined by the level up mechanic which has spread to 90% of all AAA games so since we can't call almost all games RPGs we have to narrow the definition for the term to have any meaning in the future.
