I've only played that game once and it was like 6 years ago, but looking at the description of play on Wikipedia, It's kind of similar.
Each round an enemy card is revealed, and at the end of the round it runs away if it survives. Boss types stick around until they die. Then everyone reveals 1 card at the same time that they play that round, usually weapons, and then the monster attacks, anyone who survives attacks back, and dole out blood echoes and loot as applicable.
The strategy comes from swapping out your starting gear for gear from the Hunter's Dream, which either have more damage, giving you more echoes and limiting the available amount for people after you, or have special effects often based around fucking over your "friends", like the Flamesprayer that doubles the damage hunters in melee combat take that turn.
Games are only like 30-45 min long but fun.
