WW1 is a mess as far as things go. Everyone had so many alliances that when one country declared war they all took sides and went to war despite none of them really wanting it. Germany made the mistake of promising the Austro-Hungarian empire that they'd support them regardless, so when AH declared war on Serbia (and they were looking for absolutely any excuse to do so) so did Germany and then Russia declared war on both of them because they'd promised to help Serbia. The French are big babies and wanted an excuse to kill Germans. UK would've stayed out of it if neutral Belgium didn't get invaded.
