How the fuck is Dark Souls combat good...

How the fuck is Dark Souls combat good? It's the most barebones combat possible yet people praise it simply because it punishes mistakes as every combat system should?

>as every combat system should?
But doesn't.

Dark Souls isn't technical or deep like some action games, but at any one moment there should be a lot running through the back of your mind. How much stamina do I have, how much will the next attack consume, will I have enough to dodge after that, does the enemy have poise, will I break it if they do, how long will my attack take, will I have time to dodge afterwards, do I have poise, should I block or dodge, can I parry, can I backstab, am I in range of their attack, are they in range of mine, how long will my attack take, what's behind me, etc.

You need to be fully aware of your surroundings. Combine this with unusually satisfying animations and tight controls and you've got a system that a lot of people just love.

how is it barebones?
most weapons have 4 possible 2/3 hit combos + jumping, running and rolling attacks, and they also get an altered moveset by two-handing
there are 16 different melee weapon categories in DaS1 with a unique moveset each and many weapons that have unique attacks
on top of that you have your stamina that you have to manage to block, roll and attack and all attacks make you commit to them, which means you have to time them properly to actually hit and defend yourself afterwards
all that together makes it important that you learn how to approach enemies and learn their attack patterns to use as little stamina as possible so you have enough to attack during openings
that is without even touching magics or ranged weapons
but let's not talk about PvP

That's why it's good, if you make a mistake you're punished for it. Because if you make a mistake it's entirely your fault for not inputting the right commands.

Maybe you're just shit?

in DS 1 I like the combat because it's satisfying desu. Just weighty enough without being too clunky -- you can feel the hits.

>if you make am mistake it's entirely your fault
not at all, there's definitely trial and error bullshit like not knowing what movesets your opponent has

>there's definitely trial and error bullshit like not knowing what movesets your opponent has
What, so it's bullshit to not know exactly how an enemy will behave and attack when you first meet it? What the fuck man.

The game's not literally going to tell you how to beat every opponent dude. For new enemies you just have to lay back, try to dodge, and see if there's any pattern to their movements you can take advantage of. But I guess most games are "bullshit" if you don't have a detailed guide next to you at all times.

"No."

It's a basic game with a few button presses as its deepest combo. It's paced and overpunishing.

awfully paced*

Why do you cucks have to write long sentences to excuse your awfulness

Modern games make it possible to be tanking hits left and right so little girls (male and female) can see the ending and are encouraged to buy the dlc.

>hit enemy 30 times
>spam invulnerability
>he hits you once and stunlocks you for the kill
>"git gud"
Shit game.
The thing that kills the game for me is iframe dodge, which is the most casual bullshit imaginable, and the fact you end up using the same weapon and watching the same animation for 70% of the game.

When you've been eating shit for your whole life, a simple loaf of bread tastes like the best thing ever.

Why bother when I can just summon people to beat the game for me
GOTY EVERY YEAR

Can't agree on the tight controls part. It's suboptimal how running, evading and jumping have all the same input on the first game. All four shoulder buttons are used for attacks when two would have been enough.

That's what a shield is for. I blame this on shitters on the other side of the fence that insist shields are not fun and all playthroughs should be without shields. Shields aren't meant to be turtled behind, but used tactically to safely assess your opponent and as insurance for late rolls (you can roll while holding your shield up).

If you don't know what your opponent's moveset is you hold up that shield and play cautiously until you figure it out AKA G I T G U D

>It's suboptimal how running, evading and jumping have all the same input on the first game
Fair, considering they did change it in all future games aside from Bloodborne

>All four shoulder buttons are used for attacks when two would have been enough.
What the fuck are you talking about? You want every weapon to only have one attack button?

Not less attacks, but other buttons assigned, perhaps with combinations and press length. Just look how Nioh handles it.

I might be in the minority but the combat is the least important aspect of Dark Souls to me. I play for the exploration and world.

I don't see people bitching about Zelda's combat despite it having even less options and attacks than Dark Souls.

I mean seriously, you don't see how that's your fault? You're gonna blame the game?
Or, if you don't like the idea of summoning, don't summon. I have never summoned. Shouldn't you be summoning? That way maybe you won't cry as much to strangers on Sup Forums.
Unironically this

>Not less attacks, but other buttons assigned, perhaps with combinations and press length
Which is fair, considering Bloodborne introduced charge attacks that actually come out totally different depending on how long you charge it and DS3 introduced hold-button stance modifiers.

>Just look how Nioh handles it.
Personally I thought having three different "stances" for each weapon was redundant, it's easier to pick the most balanced one and just keep it on that. Also having all the attack buttons on the shoulders is the one thing I applaud Souls for since it allows camera manipulation while attacking, which is something you can't do in Nioh. Souls is about mastering a simple moveset and choosing the right attacks at the right time, not having ten million billion moves per weapon and expecting to know them all like a traditional action game, which I feel Nioh is.

>that magical feel when you first find Ash Lake

>how the fuck is dark souls combat good
it's not, it's mediocre at best
