What do you guys think? Are guns holding video games back?

What do you guys think? Are guns holding video games back?

Yes. Yes they are.

Swords and melee weapons have the possibility to be infinitely more fun to play with boomsticks.

I really want an open world with just a camera.

No, you just have to think up of new creative guns

>I really want an open world with just a camera.
Got you covered bro

Watchdogs 2 would've been better without guns.

HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS

WHAT IF

ARE YOU LISTENING?

WHAT IF WE

GUYS

WHAT IF WE CREATE A GUN THAT SHOOTS OUT MORE GUNS?

Watch Dogs would have been cooler if you just had non-lethal options like mace and tasers and sick nasty hand to hand combat. Why the fuck is a hacker killing people with an automatic rifle?

Yes. We need more brawlers like God Hand

>liberals have become so overbearing, they're trying to grab guns in fucking video games now

That's not the point of the article though.

...

yes guns are holding games back

instead we should have violent and brutal melee hack and slashes with realistic decapitation and limb severing systems and buckets of blood.

Also sound effects should be visceral. Crunches of skulls being smashed by skulls should be audible and in the front of the mix

you should have to beat a character for five minutes with your fists in the face to kill him, his broken teeth flying about and snot and tears going every where.

yeah guns are holding games back

So Borderlands?

>Is violence holding games back?

Yeah, I've always said we should replace guns with rape

It's more that gun gameplay mechanics have stagnated without innovation since casuals have such low standards.

YOU MIGHT BE ON TO SOMETHING!

There should be more power fists in games.

Yeah, that's mostly true. Finding an enjoyable FPS is a rare thing.

The second one can be played entirely nonlethally tho.

>most prominent figure in the graphic is from a game where shooting things is discouraged

When will Deus Ex bring back melee combat? MD brought back biocells and choices about augments, when are we going to get the prod back?

FUCK FIRST PERSON I FUCKING HATE FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS, I FUCKING HATE FIRST PERSON ANYTHING JUST FUCKING TAKE YOUR FUCKING FPS AND SHIT IT OUT YOUR FUCKING DICK

Yes, guns themselves are definitely holding gameplay back, and totally not the lack of creativity of the developers who utilize gun gameplay to appeal to the wider casual market.

>Are guns holding video games back?

Yes. Someone needs to think of a new creative mechanic to replace it. But that's just it, doing something like that is really hard, because it's a thing that is ingrained in a portion of video games.

Like, here's an idea. A video game without combat. How the fuck could someone do that, without making a boring fucking game. And i'm not talking about being able to avoid combat, like Deus Ex, I mean not having any at all.

It's hard, because combat is so ingrained in the video game formula. Even Mario had combat.

>1996
Duke 3d had creative weapons like the freeze ray, shrink ray and the devastator
>2016
Everything is still a variant of pistol, assault rifle, SMG, LMG and sniper rifle

It's a Frank that shoots Franks

Fuck no. This type of shit is though.

spot on

you could make interresting games even if the playable character only use guns, but devs and publishers are only here for money, not trying to found new technology to improve or new inovative gameplay

>A video game without combat.

Skate series. At most, you can fall down and get hurt, but calling that "combat" would be like calling a walking simulator a racing game.

if its not guns its magic, swords or fists or spears. there will always be a murder button or nobody buys that boring shit.

No, hitscan low ttk instant gratification is holding it back.

Exactly this, the problem is that all gun games boil down to COD or GTA now. That means corridors and scripted sequences or uninspired killing fields.

This is one of the reasons why I liked Bioshock 1 and 2: weapons served more of a purpose especially when combined with plasmids. Same for the original Deus Ex and augs.

No. Guns are fun and always will be.

You can make already make a very successful game without guns, so I don't see how they are "holding video games back"

Yeah, we need more simple games. All these bullshit puzzles are just there to frustrate the average gamer.

I read most of the article. Basically its a complaint that shootan in certain games doesn't fit with the narrative. Short answer to clickbait title: no.

>very successful game without guns
dream more bitch boi. even wow has guns

no. What you need to do is get creative with guns. Stop turning every single fps into a shooting gallery with a story and give me a variety of guns and weapons that are fun to use.

wait a minute that card

>Why don't we just have a game where we can walk around and be friends?
You are a gargantuan faggot.
>>>/clubpenguin/

>What is Skyrim
>What is The Witcher 3

PINKIES GET OUT

desu Doom wouldve been interesting with no guns, like what now bitch

Watch Dogs 2 would've been better as a game with no guns where you have to use your hacker powers to fuck with people.

>What is Tetris

It can? Fuck I might pick it up then.

Does pop'n music count as having "combat"?
Umihara Kawase would be better without bosses. Abe's Oddyssey have a punch useless as a fighting tool.
Rhythm games, platformers, Simulation games,
Puzzle games, eroge, Keita Takahashi's games, Racing games(Outrun)...
They're a minority, but there's a lot.

There's a time and a place for everything, including guns. The idea that guns are "holding games back" is ridiculous, but it is true that many games are good without guns, and some games that do have guns would have been better without them. As said for example, Watchdogs 2 would have been a shitload better if the game didn't just let you shoot your way through your enemies.

Yes. We should first try to get some super advanced melee combat mechanics so that video game fights look and feel like the shit you see in anime.

Then, building upon that, you add guns. Think Vanquish but even more over the top.

Ideally you'd get to the point where fighting with muskets and matchlocks is more fun than fighting with machine guns.

This logic doesnt apply to FPS games btw.

>haha swords
> not both

>pass user since 2016
What the fuck is that?

Nope. What other weapons are you going to use other than melee weapons, bows, guns, lasers and plasma?

Until the critics think of something, they need to shut the hell up.

Back in the day it was conservatives.
Religious and muh children types.
They wanted to ban GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas.
They wanted to ban Pokemon for teaching kids to summon demons.
Now it's liberals who want to censor video games for some reason, I don't fucking get it.

Anyway I'm strongly against that bullshit and believe in freedom so I'd never support it.
Yet, when I think about what would happen if a ban on violent video games were to be put in place, I feel like this would force developers to come up with more interesting ideas.
Most of the games I enjoy now don't feature guns anyway.

But still I wouldn't make that kind of design compulsory, I just feel like it could improve things.
The fuck do I know though?

As long as they don't come after my sexy porno games I won't fight anyone.

Yes. But not for the reason IGN says
