memetextures.
Carmack is a hack
Didnt they use some sort of voxel polygon technique for rage?
Did that affect its size maybe
Pretty sure he's done more in life than you'll ever do.
Mostly megatextures.
>a game from 2004
>4 games which reuse assets constantly
>a game which advertised itself on a new texture system and about a terabyte of textures when uncompressed
Gee OP I don't know why RAGE was twice as big as the next game on the list.
I remember how RAGE was supposed to be this ridiculously crazy visually impressive beast, but when I played it the textures looked kinda shit and they had horrendous pop-in. Even when doing some tweaks/mods to get things to look better I was not impressed. Could never fix the pop-in problems either.
Carmack is indeed a hack.
In Rage, the original uncompressed textures were even bigger. Something like 200 GB.
>tfw it took me a week to download gtav
But user, there is no gain in RAGE.
And thats why its a problem.
Its not sharper.
Its not more detailed.
There exists other novel solutions to fix tiling
Every surface in Rage has a unique texture
>Unique texture
>Same photoshop brush used to generate them
lol
What's your point?
>voxel polygon technique
Its still suffers 90% of the tiling problems because of it.
And there is no real gain.
So
1. Not sharper
2. Still has tile issues from the photoshop brush
3. Texture popping for no real reason
Megatextures bro
That chart's pretty fucking wrong. Skyrim for example says it needs 6GB of space, not only 6Gb.
textures in rage looked like total shit, like oversharpened shit
>Its still suffers 90% of the tiling problems because of it.
Not really
megatextures
It wasn't about improving the density of the textures, but about the artistry because they essentially make one unique texture rather than reusing textures all over the place. the end product would have looked better, but the end product is so fucking large they probably had to reduce the quality of the texture(s)
What about the fact that it looks beautiful
Somewhere during the PS1 generation some smart people figured about alpha blending.
Texture 1, texture 2, texture 3.
The most common example is surface as bottom texture, and wear as the texture over that. This eliminates extreme amounts of visible tiling, because the brush and textures don't use the same are area to tile.
Rage looks "normal" except there is also a lot more poor quality decals everywhere. And still has these really unsharp "texture objects" everywhere.
What part of RAGE texture is sharp?
The fidelity is okay.
But sharp? Do you understand what sharp is? Its raw aliasing. Everything in RAGE is blended to hell and back, like a N64 game
>2. Still has tile issues from the photoshop brush
It's time to return to your wrangler, timmy
If they really wanted to do a Beautiful Game, they should have chosen a astethic where the Beauty comes into play.
A remake of quakes with Ornant inscriptions on EVERYTHING could have done with. With good contrast of rust buildings, stone, and extremely ornant cult objects.
RAGE doesn't deliver on that in any way shape or form.
"Oh god, rust and wear everywhere" doesn't really do that.
The only thing that benefits is shadows, everything else is basically killed by the art style.
Post one (1) screenshot from rage with obvious and ugly tiling
So did Hitler. Doesn't make them good people :/
megatextures
Any large cliffs.
Any larger ground texture.
Any "oh, its a rusted object".
It generally looks like there is a okay base texture on it, but there is a alpha blended brush texture over it to remove tiling, and it looks worse than if they just did that.
I said post a screenshot
size of game world =/= number of unique resources
You don't think this looks good?
Not sure why you guys seem so angry about this stuff.
CAN'T YOU SEE THE OBVIOUS TILING?!?!
Carmack isn't a hack, he is just old-school and a bit out of touch, and the things that made him successful with Keen/Doom/Quake don't work as well in modern AAA projects.
And then you play the game and see the textures up close and realize they look like ass
Play it on PC and I agree the textures aren't nearly as impressive as it was boasted they would be. I do give it credit for having a somewhat cool style and the AI is pretty unique. But the whole "megatexture" thing isn't as mega as I thought it would be.
