How do we save the Mech genre?
Gentlemen.
How do we save the Mech genre?
robots are gay af
How is giant robots fighting each other not popular?
Battletech 2017
>Muh flying samurai
youre mom is gay af
Add customization obviously.
Burn down Harmony Gold.
>tfw no rollerskating geass mech games
>How do we save the Mech genre?
By making them slow tanks.
>no jumping
>no jets
>no fast shit
>no swords
is Ring of Red good?
Why not just make a tank game then?
AC has done this for years
Just produce more of what we have, I honestly think the genre is fine it's just that we barely get any games, or innovations because although people love mechs, they all have very specific tastes.
Stuff like AC,ZoE,Mechwarrior,ACE,Macross, and Gundam Vs, are pretty good examples of some of the genre's best titles, and they capture what it's like to pilot mecha of different varieties.
If anything needs to be changed though, I'd argue that we could get more games that try to incorporate mecha aesthetics and character into and from other genre's like jrpgs, racing games, adventure games and so on.
Because right now mechs are restricted to Arena fighting game styled titles(gundam,AC, and ZoE), and more "realistic" clunky shooter games(mechwarrior, titanfall and hawken).
Why not both.jpg
not necessarily in the same game
Alright, but so very very slow to actually play.
VR. Set in a game where you control the Mech from a Cockpit view.
You can't. Half the group wants tank mechs, the other half wants anime mechs.
The best you can hope for is to make different games that appeal to each group.
that sounds like a fucking tank game. Mechs should be bombastic and ridiculous - the entire concept of mechs is impractical in the first place.
That metal scraping on metal sound astro port always puts in their games never gets old.
we have this, in fact it's been done many times
>take fantasy concept
>remove all imaginative and fantastical elements
I mean to each his own, but then why not just play WoT?
Remake Cyberbots.
titanfall 3,4,5 etc
It must have at least some rules.
You don't, Mech isn't a genre, its a theme.
virtual-on is already perfect
There's a difference between giving a fictional concept a universe to exist in, and applying reality's physics to it.
For example the force is not real, but Star Wars give it a universe where it can work.
Mecha can go the same way.
oh that looks neat
Code Hardcore will save us, believe
I understand that. But mostly it's worked just as justification for ridiculously stupid no border shit.
I think that's what he means.
If you're going to go for the fantastical approach to mechs, give them a hard set of rules/limitations/what have you for them to exist by, rather than have them be able to do literally anything on a whim.
>How do we save the Mech genre?
With waifus. It worked for Overwatch and the hero-shooter genre. I can't see why it wouldn't work for the mech genre.
>there will never be another ZoE game
>there will never be a potential Dolores cameo
I want to learn to make gaems so I can contribute to the mecha genre, how do I do this?
Sure there should be some rules to them. But I always thought that mobility was a core advantage that mechs usually have over tanks. Mechs by default should be decently mobile unless a conscious choice is made by the player to go for less mobility either via more firepower or armor.
Best mech game I've ever played honestly
>But mostly it's worked just as justification for ridiculously stupid no border shit.
This is 99% of Fantasy
No different than when the weapons showed up in FFVII, or when nanomachines were used to explain everything in MGS4 or anything unrealistic happens ever in a fictional work.
All this stuff needed to be justified by made-up BS because they're made-up BS.
Otherwise they'd be existing already
>If you're going to go for the fantastical approach to mechs, give them a hard set of rules/limitations/what have you for them to exist by, rather than have them be able to do literally anything on a whim.
I definitely agree with this if it fits the tone of the story.
For example mecha like the ones in Gurren Lagann would obviously need to have different limitations compared to those in Armored Core
Didn't the GvG devs said they will make next one to appease worldwide crowds? I trust them.
That is true.
I just want Exteel to come back.
One easily could add waifus to it like the other user suggested.
This game was so fun even though I sucked at it, it's too bad that most mecha games have died out.
But actually this reminds me, I tried out the beta for Cosmic League 2 or whatever it's called, and if you don't mind the aesthetic the gameplay is pretty solid and is a lot like Exteel
this
totally unrealistic, square cube law look it up
Why not both tanks and mechs?
>2 factions, humans and ayys
>humans use tanks and other assorted vehicles, planes, MRLS, IFV, infantry, etc
>focus on heavy armor, big guns and staying power
>ayys primarily use mechs of various types, land mechs, power armor, Macross-style transforming mechs, fuckhuge mechs (think the Mech/Spaceship in Vanquish, maybe a wee bit smaller)
>use shields and are weaboo fast, not much total HP in most cases though but the shield recharges by itself over time, still VERY powerful and often come in less numbers
>with the progression of the story humans start to make mechs too, of the big, lumbering, lots of legs and lots of gun type
>ayys start to make PS2 Vanu-type tanks
So you have stuff for everyone, slow tonks, slow mechs, fast tonks, fast mechs, planes, transforming mechs, etc etc
Multiplayer could have multiple people fighting against one of the very big vehicles controlled by a team as one of the game modes
Hm, will check it out. Every time I see someone mentioning similar shit to Exteel it's a MOBA, so I keep looking for alternatives.
>robots are gay af
I've realized that two legs make no god damn sense. High center of gravity, plus all your weight is on two points. Any damage to one of those legs, and you're down. And you can slip or fall over easily.
Why not lower your center of gravity, and add treads? That's realistic. But that's a tank.
>it's a MOBA,
don't worry full action combat, as long as the aesthetic doesn't bother you too much you might like the actual game
Because then you're a tank, the advantage of biped is the fact you can step up and step down relatively safely as well as lean, rise and duck.
sdgo was the closest thing to exteel we've had so far, and honestly it was probably better
unfortunately, it's dead too
armored core 6 is on the way, pretty much the only hope i have left
With drones and IEDs even tanks have sort of run their course.
Armor is only good in an assault these days, otherwise you're just a sitting duck in a million dollar coffin.
It needs to be basically its own genre. Mechwarrior online does this well IN CONCEPT but fails because of its cashshop bullshit. I also think the ZoE/virtual on style of mecha is sick too, but that needs to be a separate genre than the more """""realistic""""" mechwarrior style. This style should be a bit more tactical and require things like team coordination (ha) knowing where to shoot dudes (hitting the same point multiple times to knock it out), mech composition, and mech management in general (heat levels, maybe some other shit, i dunno). The arcade, virtual on style can just be insane mech-based action, ideally with 3D movement, sorta like ZoE.
>armored core 6 is on the way, pretty much the only hope i have left
I really hope my faith isn't misplaced, all the signs point to it but I just feel that sense of doubt
Why is it a bad thing to want to play the movie Robot Jox battles, but ignore the jetpacks?
tfw I like this type of game
Assault Suit Leynos remake is quite good, there is a PC version and PS4. PC version has some achievement related bugs that were never patched though.youtube.com
>sdgo
Never could play it from my country, REEEEEEEEEEe
>youtube.com
link fucked up
Literally implement cuter girls and lolis.
In fact, just tear out Ohoho from that shitty adaptation and there you go.
There's a reason bipedal tanks don't exist. Treads are so much more practical. While your bipedal tank trips and falls, the tank speeds on.
That's what a bunch of two bit MMOs do. They are all bad or bad and dead.
The only (arguable) exception is PSO2.
The ones I've found on steam:
>Gigantic army (Great)
>BAD (bad)
>Assault Suits Leynos (Great)
>Steel Strider (decent)
Are there any others?
What game is this?
Still waiting for a Pacific Rim mod for xcom
Can tanks fucking rip trees out of the ground and use them as clubs to bash each other in the head?
True-to-Battletech Mechwarrior 3025 game when?
mech guys are nerds..
so you need a nerd orientated game.
maybe like a turn based front mission that switches to fps/3rd person when an encounter happens.
..take into account that its multilayer and the bants and flanks happen in turn based mode.
epic team building and squad play ensues.
just a concept that would only get better with input.
>MMOs
I think I found your problem
It's in the filename you chodechugger.
...im sure i had an original thought..
maybe not.
file name
Did you miss the robot sale a couple of months ago? Check Gunhound EX.
>I'm a giant fag law
What does you being a fag have to do with robots?
>Did you miss the robot sale a couple of months ago?
I think I did. What was in it?
>mech game with waifus
Sega is sitting on a gold mine right now and they don't even realize it.
ACVD was probably one of the best mech games i've played to date. if they manage to just improve on that for 6, it'll be amazing.
my only worry is poorfags who don't have ps4 / don't want to pay for online. AC is pretty niche as it is, that won't help things
a pc release would really help things
More mech based RPGs
That's nothing like what he was describing, he literally just wanted tanks
>magic? perfectly fine
>demons and monsters? perfectly fine
>mountain high colossi? perfectly fine
>kawaii animu girls wielding xboxhueg swords with their tits? perfectly fine
>but hol the fuck up nigger did I just see you post a giant fucking robot?
Why do realismfags always invade mecha threads? Just fuck off. Fuck off with the tanks as well.
I guess I will get all of them in christmas sales
Cyber Knight 1 & 2
Sega has fucking Border Break and PSO2 out in Japan for years. Not to mention Virtual On. Throw us a bone.
Totally don't remember man, there were tons of stuff. May want to check this:
desuarchive.org
>xenoblade
>mech based
Boy, you don't even get the mechs until 20 hours in. Get that out of my face.
>Fuck off with the tanks as well.
I like tanks too though. They're also MECHAnical.
Since we're talking Astro Port games:
>Satazius
>Gigantic Army
>Wolflame
>Zangeki Warp
All worth playing. Zangeki hasn't been released on steam yet. They're cheap so make sure to support the devs rather than pirate.
If this thread isn't specifically about side games, Shattered Steel is a great mecha game sold on GOG. The times Bioware could make decent games.
Name me 3 (THREE) games that allow you to freely get in and out of a robot in a 3D environment. Saints Row and Watchdogs don't count because you drive other vehicles as well.
By watching PSX tomorrow for the AC6 reveal
Other than Xenogears,Front Mission, and Super Robot Wars there aren't many.
I think being able to drive other vehicles is fine, my problem with those two would be the lack of focus on mechs.
They have mechs but it's not like you can really use them much. Sure it takes awhile to get your skell but once you have it it's very rare when they take it away from you or make you go without it.
I was hoping this thread would have more cool mechs.
>these don't count even though they do exactly what I'm asking
I'm going to end up disappointed and I'm not even expecting anything.
>Titanfall 2
>Lost Planet
>Phantasy star Online 2
Well to be fair Watchdogs only have a single spidermech in a non-canon bonus mission. So it doesn't count anyway.
PSO has pilotable mecha? I thought it only has a robot race.
just wait for the new armoured core
Titanfall
Titanfall 2
EDF 4.1
PSO2
Shogo
Lost Planet
Lost Planet 2
Solatorobo
Emergency Quests and some events have pilotable mech yes.
>PSO has pilotable mecha? I thought it only has a robot race.
PSO2 is a japan exclusive. It's the one with the mechs. PSO1 lacks them.
We don't, since there isn't anyone willing to take the risk these days.
The best we can hope for is From Software making a new AC and porting it to PC, where it will reach a market that is starving for such titles.
Mechwarrior Online is the only real option at the moment for traditional Western mech combat, but that's due to cornering the Battletech market, which is old men with big wallets. Nothing else is even trying to compete, save for maybe Hawken, which is F2P first, mech second.
Needs customization and action, but any modern game will be plagued with DLC for cosmetics and other things.
They added mechs to Earth or something for a scenario, if I recall correctly
I want a multiplayer mech game where you launch from a battleship and your goal is to take out the enemy battleship while protecting your own.
The battleship serves as the repair, reload, and spawn point for both teams.
>Mechwarrior Online is the only real option at the moment for traditional Western mech combat
What about Living Legends?
Mech Assault, you'll get squished though.
>No on mentions EDF
EDF has big mechs, bigger mechs and a biggest mech. It's great, they are very slow untill higher levels though.
By making more games? Better yet, release some in the west. And mybe some for pc.
>"realistic"-mechfags
might as well ask for realistic dragons lmao
the game you seek, my friend, is Star Wars Battlefront II
So just Battlefront 2 spacebattles?
