BROOD WAR THREAD OPERATIONAL

2nd Season of Afreeca Starleague starts Sunday. Jaedong, Stork, Bisu and Flash all qualified last weekend plus a heap of other ancient Broodwar players they dug up like Soulkey and Terror who suprisingly were still pretty good. Already shaping up to be a lot better than ASL 1, lots more zergs and Tasteless + Artosis should be casting the whole thing together this time, Sundays, mondays and tuesdays each week.

What are your hopes/expectations? I'm hoping for at least one good Flash versus Dong match cause we missed out in the legends match they played in a few weeks ago. I'm surprised Stork qualified so I'm hoping he doesn't get knocked out too early, but Bisu has been playing like a beast recently.

Also General Brood War thread. Do you think blizz might actually learn something from this year's shitshow blizzcon and release a BWHD in 2018?

Someone should host a game.

Really surprised they got a scene for themselves since the game is by now ancient and in theory wouldn't get sponsors ,china has a wc3 scene too ,thats awesome

It'd be great to get some games going but I'm dogshit at actually playing it as soon as stuff starts to get hectic and more than 3-4 things need to be controlled. I just don't have the mechanical skill yet. I wish I'd put in the effort to actually learn it while I was still a kid.

Well, apparently it's as popular if not more on Afreeca and the guys who play it make way more doing that than from winning cash from tournaments (30-50k a year for guys like Flash), so I'm hoping it'll actually start to build again.

i'd be keen but i have no idea how to even play it anymore. is it even supported on bnet still?

No you need to host through Evolve P2P client. I'm garbo too, I just wanna play with someone who I don't smoke all the time.

googling. is it something similar to fightcade for Street Fighter? Also I'm probably smoke material, I only started playing recently and have only had bots for practice cause there's nobody my level to actually practice against.

BWHD would be a dream come true but I doubt blizzard would ever admit to the fact that they ruined another franchise

it would have to be literally BW with higher quality renders and nothing else otherwise it just wouldnt be the same

What would be the point?

Higher renders would probably just ruin it, it would just show how cruddy the models actually were. Current sprites fit in the game like a glove.

>it would have to be literally BW with higher quality renders and nothing else otherwise it just wouldnt be the same
This, they would have to keep the shitty pathing that made micro so fun to watch

>mfw ZvZ micro

With Total Recall mode. Is it really impossible to just use 3d model and make it 1:1 total conversion of the BW? And make it official, and free?

I don't think they're all that bad. I wouldn't mind having the option of replacing the 640x480 gamesceen with a possible higher res version but retaining the same size. Also, do you think that 16:9 support would be possible without changing the game too much?

of course. That shit is what makes brood war special and what makes it fun to watch compared to starcraft 2 where everything just clumps into a huge ball

I dunno, I hate how the SC2 designs look, particularly for Toss and Zerg. Toss units all look exactly the same and they look like weird banana robots instead of golden metal bastards. Zerg are way too homogenous and instectoid instead of looking like something cobbled together from hundreds of species' DNA

I'd prefer they used the original BW models, i'm sure they must have them in a back cupboard somewhere.

>I'd prefer they used the original BW models, i'm sure they must have them in a back cupboard somewhere.

maybe not if their recent "lol we don't hang on to old code it all gets deleted lol" track record is anything to go by.

Learn from RA2.

People with larger resolution dominated the game because they could see far more at once.

>people legitimately believe the AI is worse in broodwar than scii just because it doesn't automate all micro for players
modern gamers

Nah, i meant that the sprites would have to scale in resolution size to ensure that everybody has the same amount of map view regardless of resolution. If the game ran in widescreen everybody would have to use it I guess to maintain balance.

The pathing AI in Brood War IS horrible, but that doesn't make it a bad game by a long shot. There should be always some level of mechanical skill involved in any competitve game. You shouldn't be able to play professional soccer if you don't have the stamina to run around the field all day.

by what imaginary metric are you evaluating the pathing

damn, i don't remember reavers looking so much like metal ohmu

It is by far though, but what said. Remember commanding 3 dragoons to go up ramp and somehow fucking that up if you let them be? I loved that shit, it made uphill defense with a single turret and a couple of unites up there possible, but I don't think it's what Blizzard intended.

There's also shit that wasn't meant to be like mutas stacking and workers/unburrowing lings going thru minerals that made the game even more fun anyway.

what's the link to the channel

I guess by comparison of units to other similarly sized units in the same game. Compare dragoons getting up a ramp to something like ultras doing the same task. Maybe dragoons just stick out in my mind as an example of a difficult unit to move efficiently. Or maybe they were just the only unit of that size you ever used in that number so it stuck out.

Either way it doesn't make it a worse game, it just means that you have to invest a lot more of your practice time in working around it.

> Also, do you think that 16:9 support would be possible without changing the game too much?

Depends on who you ask and how enamored they are with clunky 90s stuff. I think it would be fine.

But I think its all BW:HD should be honestly.

i'm pretty sure they hosted it on the twitch /gsl page for season 1 but I don't know if they're doing the same or on www.youtube.com/user/ AfreecaTV this time round.

Either way it'll be on one of them. It doesn't start until 6pm KST sunday so like 5am EST/10am GMT

shit, can you imagine how overpowered dragoons would be if they used SC2's pathing? they would just swarm over everything.

also insanely hard for new players to join not only cause of the graphics etc but cause the playerbase is so small and developed that anyone new will be getting bitchslapped for a long ass time for the most part

IMO it makes it a worse game.

At least at every level except the pro-level.

Being "good" is all about being able to work around a terrible interface and execute something relatively simple to think about. Nothing else. Your opponent doesn't even come into the equation until you are at a pretty high level.

Its like playing tennis except you are missing a leg and your racquet is falling apart and some asshole kid is making the lights flicker on and off and the field is littered with random shit. Only the top 10% will be playing tennis. The rest will be barely managing to hit the ball and call it a day.

And it's exactly that misguided and foolish thinking as to why SC2 failed.

LoTV campaign showed that they still would be pretty shitty and fat. Stalkers are better

i was pretty impressed by that there were so many new players in the qualifiers for ASL last weekend, I think even a couple of complete first timer nobodies qualified for the tournament so I'm hoping they do well and we can get more.

don't forget, everybody's wearing blindfolds, even the audience

I think pinning SC2's spectacular failure to a single reason would be foolish indeed.

I started playing earlier this year after missing out on it during it's heyday (wc3 was already out by the time I could play RTS properly) and I'm now at the stage where I'm too good to play bots but i don't feel confident to play against anybody because they're all at such a high level already. I'm wishing a BWHD would inject enough new players into the game to bridge that gap.

SC2 didn't fail by any stretch of the imagination.

It wasn't BW 2.0 in Korea as Blizzard hoped.

It didn't single handely revive RTS games forever.

But it didn't fail either. C&C4, THAT failed.

Either way, if SCII failed, trust me, it was not because it didn't incorporate limitations from a 90s game in 2010...
