About ten years when I was a little kid we traded some Jedi game for a CD containing some sort of emulated games bundle, of fifty games or so. I just googled around to determine some games in it to be SNES games (Pac-Man 2, and Scooby-Doo Mystery), so this JRPG was likely for the SNES too.
It had turn-based movement across tiles on the screen during encounters, so you could approach different enemies to attack them (and they could approach you), but when you did reach an enemy I think it was typical turn-based combat.
The first mission was within some sort of castle I think.
You could have a centaur in your team at one point, who was pretty strong and could use lances. I think you could also take in some dwarf into your party who used axes...
At some point in the game you sailed to some island or other piece of land where you had to encounter enemies.
It could literally be anything. It could be an FF or DQ title and I wouldn't know, because I was a little kid and I haven't otherwise played any JRPGs that old in my life.
I bet Sup Forums can figure out what it was just from this bit of information?
You're looking for Shining Force 1 or 2 on the Genesis/Mega Drive. If you you like the genre, play Warsong on the same system as well.

Pic of SF 1.
If you fall in love with the series there is a collection of Game Gear games with added content for Sega CD called Shining Force CD as well. Also, there are three additional games on Sega Saturn, as well as two dungeon crawling rpgs, one on Genesis and one on the Saturn, respectively.

As someone who's never played any of these games but is interested in the series, which game should I emulate?
Parker Moore
Was it Romancing SaGa?
The opening of I takes place in a castle and the battle mechanics you speak of are just like Romancing SaGa.
Colton Cox
If you prefer pure SRPGs, that is going from mission to mission, go with Warsong.
If you want to experience a mix between JRPG and SRPG, that is a game where there are town that you can visit in between fights, and where there are lot of secret items and characters to discover (lots and lots of characters), then go with either Shing Force 1 or 2. Personally, 2 is my favorite but if you plan on playing more entries, you might as well start with first.
Robert Thomas
Also, to make things clear. Warsong (aka Langrisser in Japan) is not part of the Shining Force series.
Jason Sanders
>town *towns and other places
Carter Foster
A pic of Shining The Holy Ark. A vastly underrated gem on the Saturn. It's a dungeon crawler that takes place in the Shining Force universe.
Jaxson Bell
Not to mention Final Conflict and the arpg games.
Feather translation never ever.
Caleb Scott
Looks like it could be one of these. Just surprised by the combat screen of the first, as I don't remember the game having that good graphics, but maybe I just forgot. Will see if I find any YouTube videos of the game or a Genesis emulator for my system to confirm whether it's really that...
Thanks user.
Matthew Gutierrez
>the battle mechanics you speak of are just like Romancing SaGa. >It had turn-based movement across tiles
Nope.
Joshua Ortiz
You're welcome. I can't imagine that you'Re looking for something else. SF is a mixture of SRPG and JRPG and has both centaurs and dwarves (and more creatures like that). Even if you were looking for something else, the SF series is one of the best SRPG ones and quite unique. If you lke the genre, you're going to love it.
Aiden Sanders
>across tiles Are you referring to Live A Live? That one had many stories but I'm not sure if it had some of the stuff you're looking for.
Henry Ward
I'm not referring to anything, I'm not OP. Just pointing out your suggestion was not viable.
Parker Rivera
Okay...

Wait, warsong is langrisser? I've been looking into SNES/PS1 SRPGs lately as I've had a major hunkering for some of those, and Langrisser is one of the few games that definitely caught my eye. The idea of fighting battles with not just your average overpowered generals, but with tons of generic units to accompany said generals is something that really appeals to me.
I'm not sure if I'll play multiple games in the series (I usually don't tend to), so should I just emulate Shining Force 2? What about Langrisser? Which of the games should I go with?
Lucas Reed
>What about Langrisser? Which of the games should I go with?
A lot of people will tell you to play Der Langrisser on SNES. Personally, my favorite game in the series is Warsong on the Genesis. They "westernized the graphics a bit" but I actually like that. It's still anime like. Langrisser 2 on Saturn/PSX is great as well. (It's basically a better version of Der Langrisser).
If you play a Langrisser game, always kill all of the sub-units of an enemy general first (for extra exp). Because once you kill the general, his units will die too. Also keep your units close to their general, or they will perform worse in battle.
Like I said. Shining Force 2 is my favorite in the series. If you're paranoid about missing optional characters, and don't plan on replaying the game, you might want to use a guide.
Nathaniel Ortiz
Yeah I just checked SF 1 and 2 gameplay on YouTube and it was definitely SF 2, with those weird electro creatures in the castle in the first mission, the centaur (had forgotten he's with you from the beginning), then recruiting the axe guy, etc. This is definitely it. I also remember the "witch" in the intro where you enter your name and all. I had to sit through that intro several times because...
It's funny/stupid how I played this game back then: I was about 10 years old and clueless. The emulator was so shitty it didn't save progress, or I was too dumb to figure out how to make it save, so I played this game 2-3 times from the start, once getting pretty far in one sitting. Of course this got boring after a few times even for the 10 yo me, so I just gave it up, but kinda never forgot about the game.
Guess I'll see if I can find a suitable emulator for GNU/Linux (retroarch?) and start with SF 1.
Samuel Turner
>GNU/Linux (retroarch?)
Sorry, I only have used Kega for Windows a bit here and there so far. But not for SF. I still have my original cartridges. I hope you enjoy the games. I wished Sega would have made Shining Force 4 for the 3DS. I mean Fire Emblem is hugely successful right now, and Shining Force is basically a bater FE.
Also, posting pic of Warsong.
Jonathan James
>a bater *a much better
Anthony Kelly
Wikipedia tells me this game has terrible translation problems.
Are there any ROMs out there with good translation?
Jose Mitchell
Who the fuck actually used Gau? He was a shit character who contributed nothing to the story outside of the five minutes when you first meet him.
Nolan Adams
Thanks for the advice, I'll make sure to check out both Warsong and Langrisser 2. It's great to be getting into these era of games again, there's just something about them that's just not there in current day games any more. I've been having so much more fun emulating games I've missed out on during my childhood than I have with current-day games.
Michael Hernandez
Gau is actually incredibly overpowered if you manage to get certain "forms" (I forgot what his 'modes' are called). Though that means having to grind on the Veldt, which is incredibly tedious.
Elijah Garcia
Gau is the most broken character. Although yes, he has no connection to the plot whatsoever.
Thomas Murphy
People around here just parrot Der Langrisser because they know it's what you're "supposed" to say for some reason, not sure how it got that way, because the original Genesis Langrisser II is vastly superior as an srpg (and so are the later ports).
The classes are more balanced in II, and Der completely nerfs the difficulty of II.
DL also has worse graphics and audio than LII, which is shameful for a game moving from the MD to the SFC.
The only thing Der has going for it is the branching path. Which is probably why Sup Forums likes it, because people around here are srpg babbies.
Luke Thompson
No problem, user. I'm just glad there is a thread about SRPGs. I love the genre so much but there haven't been to many good new games lately. There is a new "Langrisser" game for the 3DS but apparently it's a cash grab with horrible art style and only Langrisser in name.
I forgot to mention that Langrisser 2 was Japanese only back when I played it but there should be a translation out somewhere, at least for Der Langrisser on SNES.
I've always played the original Western releases, so I can't help you out there. Some secret characters were not easy to find, back when I first played the games but I always thought that was because my English was pretty bad back then. But maybe it was due to a vague translation, after all? I don't remember.
Brody Edwards
>Gau is the most broken character.
This is verifiably incorrect. the most broken over powered character is Setzer who kills everything by using Muddle to reverse his (normally a party wipe) Joker Doom onto whatever you're fighting.
And the most broken as in doesn't work correctly is Relm who can corrupt your cartridge with Sketch.
Michael James
I ended up revealing a spoiler by reading this but anyhow: apparently the main character has lost his memory at the beginning of SF1, and later it's revealed that one of the enemy lords is his brother, and the English translation doesn't explain any of this... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shining_Force#Translation_issues
Cooper Gomez
>can corrupt your cartridge Is this what nightmares are made from.
John Russell
The more you know... I've actually bought a Japanese copy of SF1 a couple of years ago but I haven't played it yet that my moon is good enough. I might have to replay it some time.
Michael Turner
I was reading this thread and decided to look those games up and saw that too. There must be a fan translation somewhere, no?
Dominic Murphy
>And the most broken as in doesn't work correctly is Relm who can corrupt your cartridge with Sketch. How?
Xavier White
Just don't use Sketch (or Relm) and it won't happen.
Jeremiah Reyes
But she is cute.
Kevin Price
I think this is a case of NEED TO KNOW MORE
Gabriel Reyes
there's the scene with his father as well but yes, he didn't have a good tie-in because he had no actual gripes with the empire
>The Sketch bug is a bug from Final Fantasy VI. It is one of the most infamous bugs in the entire series, since it can be easily triggered during normal play and can have a dramatic effect. The bug's trigger occurs whenever Relm misses the target she is supposed to sketch, or when she sketches a difficult to sketch target.
>The bug can have various effects, such as filling the player's inventory to the brim with items such as Dirks and Gem Boxes, causing the game to freeze, or erasing all data, although the most common effects are graphical errors and game freezes. The bug is most often seen when trying to sketch enemies with the Invisible status, such as the Intangir or Gabbldegak after it casts Vanish on itself (usually sketching a Gabbldegak leads to the best results). Another variation includes sketching Gau when he reappears in the Veldt.
