What does Sup Forums think about pixel art?
What does Sup Forums think about pixel art?
If it's as good as it is in that screenshot, I'm glad to have it. Pixel art is fantastic when done right, the problem is that lots of indie devs use it because it's cheap, not because it's an artistic choice.
I think it's sexy
> because it's cheap
Pixel art actually takes more work, time and money than rendered 3D models.
I have no idea why you would say that except maybe cheap nostalgia goggles inducer.
unless you're willing to shell out enough effort to come as close to metal slug/90s SNK, it's only worthy of being labelled as shit
I think too many indie devs use it as an excuse to not put any effort into presentation, they don't try to animate it.
On the other hand, I'd take well animated sprites over most 3D work today.
This, all of this.
Pixel art can be incredible when done right, but it's generally used as a lazy cop-out.
Pixel art does indeed take effort, regardless of the actual quality behind it. But there's a different between cashing in on a nostalgic factor, and putting effort into creating actual works of art.
Nigger, things like Fez are fucking effortless
>because it's cheap
3D models are always cheaper.
and good pixelart like SNK's cost a shitload of money, that's why they reused it alot in Metal Slug , KOF, etc.
Sup Forums doesn't have an eye for the newer ones. Minimal, precise, stylish. they're still hung up on metal slug. Come on, only japs can do that shit and still remain relatively sane.
its gay like you're mom
Takes a lot of work to make it look good to the viewer and can't easily be changed as it would for 3D models.
>One pixel wide legs below the knee
Doesn't even look good when zoomed out.
You are right about it being minimal though.
People who do pixel art have a screw loose. This shit is insane.
Looks great when it's not nu-8bit indie memery.
its ok whne done well.
and it's also why they dont do it any more either though it seems like they are trying their hardest to improve with 3d
Does Metal Slug count?
Because i love those games art
Good when done well and there's a nice mesh between both the characters and the environments, I don't know what it is, but a lot of new pixel shit feel like a lot of their assets are done by completely different non collaborating teams and it doesn't feel like it clicks.
...
Damn thats fucking beautiful
shame it isn't a real game
This looks like genuine shit. This is anything but precise and stylish.
I miss the third person battles in SMT
We would never see an SMT game with spritework like that. Imagine making detailed sprites of 100+ demons along with good animations.
> decent pixel art stuck in a shit game
Duelyst please.
...
Hate it
I grew up with this shit and it only existed due to technical limitations.
There are two kinds of people who obsess over this shit.
>Obese 30yo manchild nostalgia tripping whishing he was a kid again
>10-17yo nu cuck male that grew up with cod and found this refreshing new artstyle (WOW!)
>computer screen is made up of pixels
>everything it outputs is therefore pixels
>yet they'res some supposed difference which creates "pixel art" and "not pixel art"
Art direction is still important.
Papers please was minimalistic yet it put effort into the areas that matters, same with that cyberpunk slut bartending game.
Fun fact: the main art director for duelysts pixel art is the same dude who did rogue legacy.
if you haven't tried it its a pretty gr8 game.
Who did everything else that is NOT pixel art in Duelyst? They should fire that guy.
>pixel art takes more time than rendered 3d models
no.
My thoughts exactly - the pixel art is so nice to look at, everything else is just garbage
If that's true, then why did Fez take so long to make and go through a number of graphical changes over the years?
Why did Owlboy take so long to make?
Why did SNK go broke from animating all the sprites in KoF13?
rogue legacy is the worst excuse for a flash game ripoff I've ever "played"
you're trash
>Why did SNK go broke from animating all the sprites in KoF13?
Complete mismanagement and they said so themselves
Also KOF13 used rotoscoping

is that from Owlboy?
no you stupid fuck.
KOF13 using rotoscoping proves how hard high res sprite art is to do.
What? It plays just like SoTN with a more roguelike twist and is genuinely my favorite roguelike other than maybe binding of isaac.
Yeah this sure took me so much work
t. average indie dev
>Also KOF13 used rotoscoping
Most fighting game sprite animations are based off that. Rotoscoping doesn't even do that much of the work for you.
are you this guy?
bitter party of one.
Also what game is it then?
baby needs his nap?
It's Metal Slug you dumbshit.
get out of my pixel art thread.
Wow, another generalizing tier list. It's like your saying all of rock music are better than all of folk music.
Nice umbrella-counterargument. You sure showed them.
not an argument.
yes, go to bed, child
First post best post.
This thread needs you to leave. Pretty civil and good conversation without you being a pompous asshole
I'll take good spritework over anything else because it simply makes games timeless. Sure, resolutions become bigger and games become somewhat blurrier if you stretch them to fit your screen, but they don't just suddenly look like shit.
3D however ages like shit, especially if it's "realistic" 3D. Stylized 3D can still look decent years later.
>can't even recognize Metal Slug in a pixel art thread
yeah no, you are the one that needs to leave. this is not you safe space faggot.
t. Olwboy dev
try making one that animates and see how hard it is
...
Great. Now go rig a skeleton and animate that in a 3D space.
Well I'm glad I met you guys today cause I went a week without Sup Forums and actually did a lot of shit so thank you for making me leave again :)
Enjoy your pixel thread that shits on anyone interested and trying to learn about it.
tried it. just as hard but 3d saves time in the long run
It's like watching high quality drawings come to life.
...
You're a retard if you think that's harder for a collective art team.
>Pixel art actually takes more work, time and money than rendered 3D models.
This is only true if it's good pixel art.
Sup Forums is shitty enough without you faggots
baby needs his nap? :^)
sleep child
pixel art is outdated. use 3d for 3d and drawn sprites for 2d.
...
It is cheap tho. It can be quick. It can be easier.
And at the same time it can be way harder and more expensive.
There are numerous shitty Pixel Art games that have shitty, quick and cheap use of pixel art.
And then you have KOF13 on the other hand which is pretty much the best, most expensive and hardest you can get.
I find that I'm a lot more tolerant towards it than the average Sup Forums user, but then again I remember a time when it all but peaked and then disappeared because they weren't making 2D games anymore.
I think that rough, "retro" pixel art can look nice, if it's consistent and well animated.
Obviously I prefer the more detailed stuff, but I don't think it's the end of the world if things are a bit "indie". Just look at the Hotline Miami games, I think nobody plays or judges them for the quality of their art, yet I've seen games with more effort put into their pixels put down time and again because they simply dared to show them.
Is there any game with pixel art this good throughout?
>KOF13
Aren't those rotoscoped 3d tho?
>drawn sprites
what?
What is the story behind that Robot doll in an alice dress is she loli-ish? and which MT game is this reimage based off?
I hope you're saying that Guilty Gears 3d Tech is deserving it's own god tier.
all about the animation bby
Why create pixelated low res art when you can simply draw and animate something traditionally and display that? Pixel art existed for low res displays and nobody but Nintendo uses them anymore.
yeah.
New french bread game when?
What style is cuphead?
Good, because that shit is magical.
Some Duelyst animations.
...
people are more acceptive of lazy pixel art over lazy 3d assets, leading to a lot more indie devs using lazy pixel art as a subtitute to actual effort and dedication
...
Easy on the projection, m8.
...
Less detail = fewer pixles = easier to animate.
There's a point where that is as cheap/time consuming as making things 3D. But just as with high quality 3D rendering, the more detailed you get the more time/manpower goes into it, the bigger the cost, one of the factors why so many indie developers go with a "retro" look.
Spend too much time on your 2D graphics when you're just a couple of guys working in the basement on the weekends, you end up with an eight year development cycle ala Owlboy. Most Indie developers just want to get their product trough the door in a couple of years max, and more mainstream developers decided in the late 90s that 2D wasn't worth its salt anymore for some reason, which is why you rarely see a high profile 2D game anymore.
...
...
...
>implying I'm 30
The more pixels it has, the better it is. But when do you stop considering it pixel art?
I think he meant something like rayman origins/legends and skullgirls' sprites.
...
...
...
I'm just sick of seeing it because of indie shitters dumping off low quality garbage for a quick buck. I've had enough. Even their 3D attempts are often some blocky garbage with clunky animations. Graphics aren't everything but if they're actively an eyesore then it's a problem. I understand that it's not easy to do every job at once but it doesn't make me any less tired of it.
