Keyboard and mouse work for a lot of PC games, but it doesn't seem to be the best for all of them, like Tomb Raider and other games.

What is the best controller for PC gaming? I've been looking at both the Xbox One controller and the Steam controller, since they both have great compatibility with Windows.

Wired 360

I just use a PS3 controller and that driver that makes Windows think it's a 360 controller.

I have both. It really depends for the game, but for the most part the Xbox controller is better.

DS4. It's a comfortable controller that works wireless and if you're using the right drivers the touchpad works as a mouse for launchers and shit.

There's really nothing better.

Don't buy into the xbox360 controller meme, that thing sucks and if you want it to work wireless you need to fucking change the batteries.

If you have a dualshock 3 that will work well for PC gaming (google xinput wrapper)

Or get a 3rd party 360 controller with a non-shit dpad

xbone elite

Either the steam controller or a ps4 controller if you can put up with occasional blue screens from the drivers.

The wired Xbox 360 controller is the best. Plug and play, no compatibility issues and the thing is really durable

As someone who owns both a 360 and a DS4, I find the DS4 to be less ergonomic and a bitch to get to work with Windows.

I have all of them. There's not really a bad option.
But if you want a steam controller be prepared to have it be a complete bitch to use in any non-steam game

>Add non steam game
> Launch
> It just werks
Unless the game is a shitty chink mmo using draconian anti-cheat software, it works fine in non-steam games

It's all fun and games until Steam crashes for no apparent reason and your controller stops working mid game

And that's a good complaint. Not that it doesn't work well with non-steam games

I use the wiiu pro with the Bluetooth adapter from mayflash. Works with every game and emulator, and has the best battery life out of any modern controller.

360 indeed.

I have my eyes on the Logitech F310, it's basically one of those old dualshock esque controllers they used to make (the ones with the 1 2 3 and 4 buttons) but with Xbox buttons instead and a directinput/Xinput switch. They're cheap too, 20 dollars on Amazon. I have no personal experience with them though.

A wired 360 controller is what I'd go for as the safe choice, Xbox One controllers are great but the micro USB port is kinda fucked up and will slowly break your USB cord. DS4 is also a very good choice and you don't need any special input wrappers anymore if you are playing in Steam Big Picture mode. I absolutely loved my DS4 back when I had one, probably my favorite controller.

Xbox One controller and your micro usb cable of choice

why does the steam controller's black plastic look so cheap and like shit? Did they really not think that they should make their controller look nice like xbox and playstation?

Wii U pro controller is the best controller of all time.
>Muh claw grip
I can claw grip just fine with my index finger on the right stick.

Get the Xbox One one

The Logitech controllers are fucking bulky as hell and the triggers are garbage
Also I don't know what you're talking about with the Xbone usb port.

Wired 360, I have a Steam controller and it's pretty fucking shit for gaming unless you're using it for games that aren't designed for controllers at all.

I just use mine as a glorified wireless mouse and keyboard for when I'm watching shit in bed, the on screen keyboard is really nice and you can actually search for things easily instead of taking two minutes to type out keywords one letter at a time and hope you were clear enough.

DS4 is garbage compared to XB pad, though. I mean, there's not a single reason to choose the former over the latter

Personal experience, I've had the plug on micro usb ports bend from using them with the Xbox one controller. The port doesn't securely grip the plug at all and slowly it will bend and stop working.

OP

Dont listen to anyone else but me. Buy the wired xbone controller or if you have money to burn buy the elite version. Its the nr1 pc controller out there.
I promise you its the best controller for pc games.
Seriously the buttons feel excellent, it feels like a dream holding it for hours. Its simply the best.

Anyone disagreeing with this post is either an absolute poorfag that cant afford a $30-50 controller or a troll.

steam controller best for any 3D games but you have to get used to it.
360 controller for all other games.

this keyboard is a life changer. i use the steam controller every day but i've only used it for gaming twice.

Bought one of thses.
Movement and shorter delay as when searching buttons on the keyboard combined with the precision of a mouse make a really good setup. Cant go back to gamepads nor keyboard.

looks like a dildo

If you're playing games that are meant for controllers then Xbox controller. If you're playing games that are meant for keyboard and mouse and have too many keys to map to a controller then Steam controller.

Honestly, this is just a general problem with micro usb which luckily has been fixed with USB-C, so perhaps the next generations' controllers will be better.

Thinking about getting two steam controllers during the next sale, simply cause they're cheaper than the xbox one's

You shoulda done that a few days ago
Amazon had them for $35 each with a carrying case

yep, is ok to hold tho and pretty lightwight. Of course you can fuck yourself with it if ur into that kind of bazinga

Xbox One Elite controller. Steam/PS4 controller is only useful if you're away from your keyboard/mouse for some reason.

they arent meant to replace controllers
they are a substitute for a mouse whilst gaming laidback on the couch or so

Yeah it's an issue with the format but it's worse and happens more quickly on Xbox One controllers. My phone charger croaked after about a year of use, while my micro USB cord had to be replaced within a month of using the Xbox One pad.

As a Steam controller owner I'd say fork out for the Xbone controllers unless you only play strategy games or any other type of games that are meant for kb+m (except for FPS games)

The main pro of the Steam controller is that it's ridiculously customizable so if you're playing a game that uses a shit ton of keybinds, you can configure your Steam controller if you have the patience and be able to play with it.

If you only want it for racing/fighting/action/whatever else games then just get the Xbone controller.

Mostly because you use the controller while it's plugged in no? I don't know I'm just assuming here and figured it's the extra strain being put on it. If it's from just being plugged in and static that's pretty shitty desu

sounds like you are some medieval brute

my xbone controller shows no wear in the usb socket after a year of use

and ive used the same microusb cable for 3years to charge my phones

Steam controller is God tier for rocket league and redshift

xbone
wired 360 if you're short on cash

What types of games would be better to use with a controller over a mouse and keyboard if mouse and keyboard can be used in all games?

Given the price difference when the Steam controller is when its on sale, you'd be better off buying the Steam Controller + a more dedicated gamepad for the things that the Steam controller doesn't work well for like one of the retro SNES gamepads or a fight stick.

I'm using Xbox One pad for most "third person" games.
When it comes to 2D games like Street Fighter I'm on DualShock 4.

jrpg
platformers
old games
comfy games
racing games
gta games

Any games that take advantage of the joystick's movement range like driving games. Driving with a keyboard is rancid because you're either turning all the way or not at all, and if you only want to turn a little bit then you have to tap the fuck out of the key and it just looks awkward. I play most third person games with a controller too for the same reason, doing jagged turns with the keyboard triggers me. Some games also have variable walk speeds which you can't use if you use a keyboard.

i have the wired 360 and the fucking direction stick drifts to the right when it's sitting idle.

shit's annoying as fuck, does the Xbone controller do that?

i always liked this controller appart from that drift shit.

if 360 don't play games that use dpad

Games where analog movement matters.

Racing games are often mentioned as are third person action games but I feel that's much more up to person preference most of the time, last game where I experienced an actual difference was MGSV where you couldn't crouch walk at a medium pace on a keyboard which annoyed the shit out of me.

Tomb raider works perfectly fine with a keyboard.

did you try calibrating it

3D platformers, stealth games, and racing games aka the three genres where analog movement actually matters. 2D platformers and JRPGs often feel more comfortable with a controller.

>MGSV where you couldn't crouch walk at a medium pace on a keyboard which annoyed the shit out of me
Same here for Hitman. Having to power walk everywhere fucking sucks when it comes to tailing/leading NPC's who only walk at half your max speed, so you have to do bhop motions with the mouse to slow yourself down.

Racing games. With the Gabepad I bind steering to the analog stick and the gyro, gears to the grip buttons, gas and brake to the triggers. If there's a boost mechanic I'll bind that to the final click on the triggers.

Most other types of games are also really playable with it, but you have to do your own bindings and unlearn the SNES style controls for a lot of games because you want to use the grip buttons, and the pad clicks for most of your really common actions.

>Doing jagged turns with the keyboard triggers me
This is why I bought a keypad with an analog many years ago. Then xinput came along and completely fucked that up, even with a wrapper. It's disgusting the amount of games that can't accept joystick and mouse input at the same time.

Used a DS4 for a while then sold it to a friend and got one of the new xbone s controllers. It's nice not having to deal with 3rd party drivers and ds4windows anymore.

DS4 support with Steam made it actually easy as shit to use on PC now, so I finally retired the old DS3.
It has more functionality than a 360pad does when you plug it in, its great.

The sheer difference from the norm almost turned me off the controller originally. Took a week to fully nail it down. Glad I didnt drop it, I can't live without its features now.

Are any of the Xbox controllers the same size as the DS4? I found the 360 kind of big since it was uncomfortable to reach the LB.

calibrating in windows does jack shit.

is there a software that can set some kind of deadzone?

hmmmm, gonna google for that shit

Seems like it's a good "controller" if you're willing to put some work into it:

youtube.com/watch?v=Uy9-OUTeE7A

Yeah, the biggest difficulty for me was the left pad. When I first got it at least the default settings for it were really bad and that led to me using the analog stick basically all the time. However a while back I decided to try it again and the newer cross gate mode settings seem to work just about perfectly.

Single player FPS games, or console FPS games with the left pad for movement, with the right pad for mouse and the four most common actions bound to the clicks, grip buttons, and triggers works really well.

There's a really good third party config tool that I use when I want to use it outside of Steam, but last I knew it was still Linux-only.

trying out xpadder or whatever it's called, it's supposed to have a deadzone and other customizations

I should try it out for movement, I've just been using the analog. My left pad typically is used for 2 radial menus. Id like for them to add the ability to add more than mode shift to a single input so I don't have to screw around with profile swapping on press and release, and the ability to add text input for a button so I don't have to bind something to an Fx key and capture it with auto hotkey.

xbone controller
no usb problems after months of use
best ergonomics of all time
best triggers of all time
just werks with everything

Ive always used a wired 360 controller. Most games with gamepad support are designed for the 360 controller

I like emulationg stuff. From having used the dualsction, regular classic controller, the dualshock 3 and the xbone controller

Logitech dual action
>Plug it in, it just werks. 15/10, would plug again.
>D pad is catastrophic, whoever approved it should be kicked in the balls
>Buttons are mushy, imagine DS Lite's buttons
>Cord fucked up after some months, I glued the damaged section to the controller so it works again
>5/10 last minute gift. I got mine for $9 at fucking Gamestop.
I gave mine to my brother, I saw it under his tv so I figured he must use it sometimes

Classic controller
>Have to have the wiimote on my lap which is fucking stupid
>6/10 ergonomics. Its annoying at first, then you get used to it, then it becomes tiring
>Battery life depends on your AAs so if you don't have eneloops good luck
>5/10, something is better than nothing

Dualshock3
>Sometimes the software (SCP new revision or whatever it's called) stops working. Sometimes it doesn't recognize analog triggers
>7/10 or 3/10 ergonomics depending on people because it's a goddamn dualshock
>Amazing battery
>7/10, it's great when it works. When it doesn't I have to resort to browsing Sup Forums

Xbone
>Have to install W10 anniversary if you want bluetooth wireless connection because muh integration of windows users
>Vibration doesn't work on bluetooth. Nobody said this in the youtube tutorials, fucking assholes
>Needs to use AA batteries which triggers the autism of some people. IMO it feels better when used with a cable cause I like a light controller
>8/10 because god tier ergonomics, if they fixed the no vibration or made a 3rd party software it would become 9/10

You forgot to mention how the scp drivers love to bluescreen occasionaly on controller vibration, corrupting your filesystem and putting you through a 2 hour chkdsk

It happened to me maybe three times when I used the original SCP drivers. The later revisions at least have the decency to stop working without crashing the computer

This problem persisted for me up until whatever the latest release last month was when I finally got fed up and bought a different controller.

Does steam controller touchpads act like a mouse all the time or just in games? I mean could I just go into full couch potato mode using it not just for games but regular stuff as well.
This is kinda important, actually crucial thing for me.

See and

You can set up a profile for the controller to use when not in a game. So yes, it's great for shitposting on Sup Forums

Either the Xbone or 360.

The wireless reciver for the Xbone controller works for Windows 7 now too.

Whichever has the best D-Pad wins, I hear the Wii U Pro controller is supposed to be good?

gamecube

Who uses a d-pad this day and age?

Steam controller if you want the whole package. You have to get used to a couple of things when emulating a regular controller, for example using a touchpad as joystick and relying more on the backpaddles than X and A because they're harder to reach on this controller. But it will let you play anything from Forza, to perfectly emulated Super Mario Sunshine, to Diablo 1 or Deus Ex 1, from the couch. Aiming is also vastly superior thanks to the touchpad - gyro combo.
Lastly the basics are pretty damn good - has a nice polling rate and lasts like 100 hours on 2xAA batteries.

I'd grab the DS4 otherwise. Better choice than the Xbone one IMO, and works on standard Bluetooth. With the inclusion of the DS4 customization on Steam it is a breeze to use it with the regular controller template, and you can do custom stuff like rearrange buttons, turbo buttons, using the touchpad as a mouse, etc. There's even a joystick mouse mode for playing M+KB only games.
