FF9 has a charm that I didn't fully appreciate when i was a kid. I'd say you are in for some fun. Play ff7, ff8 and ff9. 10 is good too and they each have their own stories and settings so you don't have to do it in any particular order.

If you're getting it because of Freya I have some very bad news for you.

Beyond the second half of Disc 2 Freya ceases to exist in character growth and storywise altogether. Out of no where they drop everything dealing with her with no new lines and brings nothing new after her arc is done.

It was obvious the writers wanted to do something with her finding her boyfriend but like almost all Final Fantasy games from the PSX era they butcher the last game to make the deadline for release.

The gameplay itself isn't all too bad and the story bar the shit end boss is decent. Like I stated before, if you're just there for the rat waifu you're going to be disappointed.

Well fug. That puts a bit of a damper on any motivations for me, but I still want to check 9 out.

When I first found out who Freya was, I thought she was some kind of dragon thing. The claws made me think "dragon" for some reason.

I could never make sense of her head, like the shape and such. It's even worse since her hat covers it all the time, but it's hard to see the "rat" in her face.

And I'm not aware of any, to be honest. Actually having to think up imaginative non-human characters when anime characters are easier to make and design means small devs aren't likely to bother. And who knows if any of the major devs will ever try again.

You mostly answered your own question. It's more cost effective to just use a base human model and slap on animal parts and call cosplay a monster girl. It's cost effective and requires little to no imagination.

You could argue it's more marketable because you're going to get knee-jerk reactionists that will scream bloody murder if they so much as think there's a anthropomorphic animal undertone to the game. Things like that will also end up as porn fuel despite anime shit and other human characters being sexualized. Just the idea of animal people being sexy send those types of people into a spastic fit.

Simply put, most developers aren't brave enough to take the gamble and would rather cut corners and stick to the status quo when it comes to beast races.

Seriously. The Javalin combat in Type-0 and FFXV kind of sucked, and Valkyrie in the Bravely games is obnoxious because all the good moves cost fucking BP. Plus the Brave and Default system kind of makes abilities like Jump far less useful than in the classic games.
I swear the FFIV DS remake was the last time Dragoon was any good, but then I never played the MMOs, so I can't speak for those.
