Here's a prescription for some GetGud pills.

Of all the bosses in DS3, I think this one and the DLC Scythe boss are the hardest, but I also didn't try parrying him until NG+ which made the fight significantly easier, but still died a bunch in learning the parry timing.

Make sure youre on the stairs behind him . he should not be . keep the fight like that . his combo misses because he is taller than you .

Maybe I got lucky but Pontiff only took me 2 tries. I really liked that fight, Pontiff had a cliche Mecha anime moveset about him which I found fun. Had a harder time with the Dancer or whatever her name was.

This is by far the easiest, most risk-free strat against the Pontiff. Parrying at least requires some timing; circling just breaks the fight.

literally just spam dodge as he attacks you. also when his shadow comes in my opinion its easier to kill it and then beat the main boss down.

Yeah, I was never good at parrying and relied entireky on a simple sword in DS3, and Pontiff kicked my ass for three days.

Still, perfect your dodges, I seem to recall he's less dangerous if you stay very close to him and circle him, as some of his blows will literally go over your heads. Phase 2's a bitch but he's less aggressive when the clone's out, you can either use the clone to know his attack beforehand or focus on the clone to destroy it, as Pontiff will then makes another one after a while so you'd have the opportunity to go loose on him when he does.
