I don't think that Microsoft is hoping that the scorpio will save the brand. I think they are updating the console because they feel the need to. The next gen will decide Xboxs fate. If it doesnt beat sony or at least come close, Microsoft will likely kill off the brand or sell it off to appease their investors.
The xbox live division of Microsoft has never turned a profit even with the paid online for all these years. So with the xbox on the down trend there is more pressure then ever to kill it.

Not really. It requires putting a configuration together online and maybe running it through a tech forum of some kind to see it won't explode on you. You can probably pay a little extra to the shop in order to build it. Real cancer are premades where people don't even know what hardware they have.
People also dismiss PC pays itself off the more and more you actually play games because they're, on average, 20% cheaper on PC than one consoles if you know where to buy. I'm not even talking grey market like G2A or anything. Not to mention regular deep discounts. It really piles together when you realize you're not paying $60 for each new game.

Actually, I think they know exactly why the ps4 has sold twice as many. Its really very simple even stupid fucks on Sup Forums get it. It came down to two things ultimately.
Number one being the price. If the xbox had been unbundled with kinect and sold for 350 or 400. It would have done much better.
Number two and I think this point is the most important factor in why they lost the gen. Microsoft completely underestimated the publics attention and knowledge to the fact that it would be less powerful and more expensive. It was a massive blunder. One of which they won't commit again.
So instead it'll be more powerful, more expensive and late. Sounds familiar.

Crackdown is an inexplicable success to me. I have the first one, and it's ok, but I never understood how it made it this far. The destruction in 3 is pretty appealing, though.

Hardware competition isn't good for anyone. All it has done is fragmented the industry so that games cost even more to make and we get shit like exclusive platform content.

As I said the new consoles are more similar in terms of silicon design than any other gen before. And they are only going to become more similar as time goes on. AAA titles are shit because the dev and publishers are for more concerned with milking every last dollar out of their IPs and are less concerned with the actual quality of their product. I would agree more with you if the two consoles in question were the previous gen considering the vast differences in terms of architecture. Even then I would still mostly disagree.
