God-tier RPG games
Can anyone recommend other good RPGs? Not necessarily in the same style of gameplay as this.

your game isn't even canon
New Vegas
OP asked for god-tier not dog shit
>Still better than any dogshit Bethesda Fallout game
Best game in the series, best game of last gen
>Best game in the series
haha
It's the most boring in the series by far
Go to bed todd.
Gothic 2. Be warned though no other RPG will ever come close.
Underrail, for god-tier turn based combat and exploration.
Is this a meme? Everyone is talking this shit.
Is it actually fun?
fpwp
Come on now, it definitely had some charm but it wasn't amazing
yes, it is fun.
>Everyone is talking this shit
do not confuse underrail with undertale
I tried playing it, but I got overwhelmed by the potential for build diversity when I started looking up build guides. I wish I didn't have such a one-track mind so I could play it.
psi/melee monk is pretty good for first playthrough, thought control and telekinetics is extremely fun, you'll get the most out of it on a first playthrough. on subsequent playthroughs you can try other stuff like crossbow ninja or whatever.
As I understand it, attribute checks matter in both dialogues and gameworld interactions. how sad will i be that i'm missing out on all the hidden passages because i min/max'd my PER to 4?
thought control opens up a lot more information at certain points in the game actually if you want to understand the lore, you'll love that you went with that
imho perception only gives minor benefits, like your character might notice some passages that lead you past obstacles you'd have to maneuver otherwise, or you'll find some minor loot. didn't run into a quest where i'd really wanted to have perception.
Conversations are a huge part of why I play these sorts of games, so it sounds like I won't be missing out on much of what I want with this build. Thanks!
Yeah it's pretty fun.
>only good steampunk
>giant open world
>dark as fuck
>shitton of quests with alternative paths
Underrail.
Fallout 1 was better
Baldur's gate 2 is still unsurpassed.
Compared to the original Fallouts? It's shit. Compared to Bethesda's "GHOUL IN LE FRIDGE XDDD" Fallout? It's a fucking masterpiece.
Tons of exploration, many build varieties, very combat focused.
One user said it quite well.
>you have 10 ways to complete quests in Fallout 1 while killing enemies in couple of ways
>you have 10 ways to kill enemies while completing the quests in couple of ways in Underrail
It's quite simplified statement but it stuck with me.
New Vegas
Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen
Kill yourselves. True enthusiasts know that Fallout 2 is the worst in the series despite 4 of course.
>it wasn't amazing
It's literally the best RPG ever made.
Why's that? I never got around to playing 1 or 2, only New Vegas.
I've heard that people don't like it because it's silly, or because they don't like tribals.
Fallout 2 is an objective improvement upon 1 and everyone knows that. It's one of the best sequels of all time.
>I dump 10 into LUCK because I'm a fucking retarded casual and then complain about easter eggs popping up on me
every time
>the jew gnomes' ogre/human interracial diversity conspiracy
Shitty combat where you abuse stunlock is the best?
You can't do that for most animals in the game, trying to abuse stunlock for human enemies will also end badly for you pretty fast.
We're talking about 2, 1 was similar but unpolished in that regard.
Replaced the atmosphere with dank memes and silly jokes. The first time you go to the enclave's camp you should feel the tension but the guards are le funny jokesters instead. Not to mention the downgrade in gameplay that you now literally play on luck. Like to reach the enclave base you need to pray that no random encounters will happen or you are immediately game over and there is no way to avoid this. Safest bet is to get the car for the improved speed on the map, but even then there is a good chance for a random encounter.
No to mention that the strongest fucking armor in the game is also the perfect disguise for the most dangerous places in the game, including the very last part of the game. You can literally skip all the endgame by wearing the strongest armor.
beside Planescape: Torment, what are other good RPGs that don't focus on combat?
Age of Decadence
Inquisitor
that's why it is the strongest armor :^)
Fallout 1-2
Planescape: Torment
Arcanum
Baldurs Gate 1-2
Icewind Dale 1-2
Nox
Underrail
Honorable mention: Shadowrun
As far as CRPG's go these are the greatest, there is actually a bunch of other ones available on gog.com and more obscure places that are decent too.
The only modern RPG i liked was Dragon Anus: Origins, though it was the beginning of the end for Bioware. At least the elves knew their place in that game.
>Shadowrun
Despite the HUD and the mechanic side of the games being a bit of a small disaster, the writing and atmosphere of Dragonfall and Hong Kong are godtier.
I wish they had the balls to do something a bit more complex.
>The first time you go to the enclave's camp you should feel the tension but the guards are le funny jokesters instead.
No shit, they humanised their villains? That was the point. Enclave grunts aren't some kind of army of darkness, they are just dudes doing their job and don't even know plans of their leaders. You might as well complain that most supermutants in F1 were just easilly fooled drooling idiots.
If you can enjoy it for what it is, it's a great enough game.
I guess the same could be said for some other new CRPG's like Pillars of Destiny and Wasteland 2.
I found the "atmosphere" of PoD completely ruined by the OC-donut kickstarter NPCs and Wasteland 2's engine and overall technical side was too bad to ever become enjoyable. Maybe next time.
It's one thing to humanize the villain and another to make them fucking clowns who can't hold it in to meme or joke for a second. When I'm pretending to be on guard duty and the sergeant walks by a solidier and the soldier goes Yes sir, fucking sir every single time then fuck it all.
The enclave was some of the most undisciplined group of people in the entire game. They were literally Sup Forums. Just memeing all day and and unable to stop the banter for a second.
gameplay is shit.
also you need to grind in certain mission to continue or monsters kick your butt.
How is the writing/lore besides the enclave? Especially in the various towns and settlements.
Soldiers goofing around? Stop the press!
150 hours non-stop fun and adventure.
it should have been less combat-oriented, that's for sure. but the setting and story are fantastic.
Baldur's Gate 2, it's the godmother of all RPGs, and it really aged amazingly well, you'll have a tough time learning the THAC0 crap (god knows I still don't know how it works), but other than that, you're in for the best RPG of your life, everything is so well done, from the art design to the characters to the stories and quests, it's perfect.
You'll have to play it atleast over 10 or more times to see everything and do everything, it gives you atleast 100 hours of gameplay alone.
Maybe it's supposed to serve as a thematic contrast to the fraternal and knightly attitude of the Brotherhood of Steel?
It's just as bad. The memes are off the charts. In Fallout 1 the main character was the funny jokester, or better said there was the option to be funny with tons of dark humor and all the NPCs were kinda serious so it was funny as hell but still had the atmosphere to go with it.
In Fallout 2 everyone is a funny guy who loves dem dank memes and jokes. The main characters humor is way more silly instead of just satirical dark humor.
And that's just the dialog. I didn't even mention the tons of things that are completely out of place in this game.
>but the setting and story are fantastic.
that's true. i even tried to roleplay as roland deschain from dark tower series. a gunslinger with persuasion skills.
Underrail is kinda better than Fallout 2 and I've played both games, Underrail is so fucking good for an indie game done by a really small team (less than 10 people), it's unbelievably customizable gameplay is something not even Fallout 2 could be compared to.
And it has tons of quests, locations, rich lore, weapons, gear and other weird stuff, oh, and it has the best and most diverse crafting system in any game I've ever played.
They are also said in-game to be mostly girls with little training. Fact that they are so undisciplined is the very reason why you are able to infiltrate the base.
Both games were obviously flawed, but i still sat through them and got a bit of fun(implying) out of it.
I haven't tried Tyranny yet, i think Sup Forums managed to pre-emptively ruin it for me with the SJWerewolf etc.
I know it's a different genre, but the only recent game that really had me invested in the characters was Rimworld. When you've spent 20+ years trying to keep a character alive, and create a sustainable environment for them you really learn to appreciate them.
Someone should pair up a basebuilding/survival game with a CRPG. And not halfass it like Toddout 4.
Went off on a tangent there
Underrail is not like Fallout aside from the fact they're isometric RPGs set in the post-apocalypse. It has entirely different focus on combat and exploration over story and characters.
Today i will remind them.
2 > 1 = NV > 4 >>> 3
>girls
WHat the fuck autocorrect. How did you turned tribals into girls?
Maybe if the fucking brotherhood was in the game there could have been an established contrast. Or maybe if there was the option to join the enclave if would have been nice to see that they are just average joes. But like that it was a pointless sacrifice for some writer to have a field day.
It's actually a shame how underrepresented steampunk actually is. No, sticking bolts and top hats on everything doesn't make your game steampunk. Arcanum is maybe one of half dozen games that got it right.
How would you handle it? Make Navarro into some kind of a bizarre death camp with enclave soldiers eating babies during their brakes between rape sessions?
>Arcanum is maybe one of half dozen games that got it right.
What are the five other ones?
Yes, Fallout 2 went overboard with the memes to the point where it ruined any immersion. It's really a shame, since it's superior to the original in almost everything else.
Deus Ex is one of the best RPGs, Planescape: Torment and VtM: Bloodlines also come to mind
Interesting! I suppose that explains, to some extent, the existence of the "Wild Wasteland" trait in New Vegas.
Stop the memes, stop the jokes. Show a little off what the enclave is about, the patriotism, the purge mentality, the superiority. Definitely no off duty talk while they're on duty. You can humanize them in the private areas but not in the middle of duty infront of their superiors. Show off the discipline of a highly organized group.
HBS at least showed progress which is more than I can say for most developers dead set in their ways because they know what's best. I guess that's one benefit of KS in that you have to appease your audience. Big problem with all KSed RPGs is that they have to measure up against the titan that Original Sin became so they seem less successful than they really are.
Well, it was made in late '90. It is largely a product of it's times. You had talking animals, ghosts and sleeping ghouls in bandages serving as tourist attractions. Not that he first game couldn't be silly as fuck at times.
>According to Joshua Sawyer, the trait was added as a compromise between members of the team who suggested "wacky" content and those who thought such content would be out of place.
>Show a little off what the enclave is about, the patriotism, the purge mentality, the superiority
You do remember that most of Navarro personal wasn't even from Enclave, right? They were local conscripts.
They outright said that was the reason, since people reacted so negatively to how silly it got
Wild Wasteland is definitely the best of both worlds
I wouldn't mind more sentient death-claws, that sort of thing. But for some reason Chris Avalone really hates talking animals.
Pretty much. All games have flaws so I don't know why people always act like they expect a 10/10 Game of the Century or something. RPGs in particular are always a careful balancing act of problems and ambition.
From the top of my head I can remember only a few
Ultima Worlds of Adventure
Vessel
Thief
Steamboat Chronicles
Game doesn't have to be steampunk-centric like Arcanum to qualify, it can just be the setting.
Sentient deathclaws weren't even that silly. They had a solid in-game explanation.
It's clearly inspired by Fallout among other games and shares many of its elements.
It's true the focus is mostly on combat and exploration but it doesn't mean the story and characters are not great as well.
Absolutely. I just saw way too many end up disappointed because they expected re-skinned Fallout.
They were all trained obviously. They don't give any shitter power armor and if they do Fallout 2 is even more retarded than I thought.
Why was the IE CRPG generation so fucking good? Sure, you had your Lionheart and Ruins of Myth Drannor but they were basically singular exceptions. Was it because few other devs even tackled the genre at the time?
>no Baldur's Gate
Baldurs gate is boring
Enclave was short on manpower, they were all living on an oil rig until recently for fucks sake. They needed capable fighters, morale and discipline be damned.
Only the vault people are even suited to join the enclave for the goals they have in mind. Also it's not like the memes and jokes suddenly stop in the oil rig.
>Only the vault people are even suited to join the enclave
You literally infiltrate Navarro as a local conscript. What the fuck are you even talking about?
Bloodborne.
Because Interplay was a god-sent RPG publisher we'll never again really get. At least until they went downhill and then they REALLY went downhill.
>dat feel when first Fallout became what it was because Interplay because gave the dev team free hands to do whatever and didn't bank on Fallout actually earning them any money
For all the shit people give Brian Fargo he knew what to do back then.
stand aside baby games, true rpg comin' through.
>Only the vault people are even suited to join the enclave for the goals they have in mind.
Do you think Wehrmacht was exclusively aryan blue-eyed blondes as well?
Yeah, the writing couldn't be worse now that we talk about it and expose it further. If I remember correctly you could walk free with a charisma check and that's it.
>charisma check
Now you are just baiting.
I looked it up and you can enter with passing a charisma check.
Enclave didn't had enough manpower to conquer my back yard, let alone wastelands. Even BoS at it's worst had more people than they had. They were desperate for capable soldiers. Guy you are scamming into letting you in even complains how poorly the situation is handled.
Expeditions: Conquistador
Age of Decadence
this
trying to stunlock human enemies in gothic 2 is basically suicide
we're not allowed to have fun, user
No matter how starved they are. Letting in every retard, giving them power armor and high end weapons and putting them right on duty is plain retarded. Don't try to argue this point.
Does it have to be turn-based to be good anons ?
