What the fuck is up with Japan these days?

What happened?

And which one is more disappointing?

I liked them.

It helps to not be a nostalgiafaggot cancer killing video games. You should try it OP.

this

They liked Skyrim, so now everything needs to be open world.

They lack the project control and experience required to create open world games, leading to projects that are ambitious but get dragged to development hell, leading to the sad state of games being released half-finished.

As much as I love japanese games otherwise, it just would be better if they didn't try to do open world. It's already hard enough for western developers who have a lot of experience with the idea, for japanese it seems to be a recipe for disaster in form of project delays, going over-budged etc.

No idea about XV, but I really liked TPP. The only bad thing about it were the recycled missions.

i bet you think FF7 was good

Games have legitimately been underwhelming since 2008. And I say that as a /vr/ fag who admits having a bias for games even older than that. You can't tell me I have a nostalgia for the mid-2000s.

Hell even Nintendo is doing this with The new Zelda game which was announced in 2011

It's because Skyrim got 40/40 in Famitsu. You can blame Todd for all of this.

Yes because it was fucking anime. I could ignore the plot stupidity. If it looks real I expect real humans and not gringy twinks

>they like skyrim
the game sold like 300k copies, which is big for a western game but still nothing compared to a dragon quest or monster hunter game that easily sells 3 millions

I really, really hope that it won't suffer from the same "big but so empty" syndrome that every jap sandbox seems to suffer from.

MGSV by far

>it looks better and plays better in 2011 than 2016

What the fuck happened?

youtube.com/watch?v=YiIx9VJWSl8

The plot to 7 wasn't stupid.

Basically this. You can see how both TPP and FFXV have such a grand vision behind them, but neither really had a realistic chance of actually reaching it in practice.

That's CGI

Japanese devs never really got over the monumental shift from SD to HD. There's a reason why so many of their games are cross-platform Vita/PS4. A significant number of these titles are PS2-tier with a high internal resolution and tacked on post-processing. Konami basically went haywire over MGSV. But you know, there's always erotic Castlevania pachinko.

mgs 5 and XV weren't empty.

Sorry should've mentioned that by "they" I meant the companies and by "liked" I meant they felt jealous of the money it made worldwide.
Thus budgets were overblown and failures were made, much like the western industry.

Famitsu gives good scores to everything. I have never seen them give a bad review. It's just journalism dick sucking taken to another level.

You just admitted yourself you have a fucking bias towards older games. You are not capable of objective thinking, which makes your opinion irrelevant because, no matter how bad an old game is, you will always pick an old game over a new one just because it's old.

I'm not him and there is no denying that this current gen is complete shit compared to the other ones.
>Paid online
>Season passes
>Games that don't work day 1
>Remasters

Stop being a nostalgiafag, those things you listed are good.

>you will always pick an old game over a new one just because it's old
Well no, I enjoyed Master of Orion: Conquer the Stars better than MOO2, which is pretty much sacrilege. But I don't care about being called a casual, because the learning curve and investment necessary for old strategy games was frankly obnoxious.

Development costs have risen to the point developers stopped trying to do their own thing and make the game they really want, and instead now feel the need to copy the most successful and popular franchises to appeal to a wider audience and recoup their losses.

Its only gonna get worse from here out when the Vita and 3DS die out, they're the last bastions for cheap vidya. Better learn to enjoy your japanese ubishit and mobages.

Well, Zelda's ambitions seem a lot more modest, so it'll either break the curse or we'll get a sweet hattrick.

I remember seeing both these games for the first time at that one E3 and getting so fucking hyped, so seeing both fall flat on their face is very disheartening.

I'm hoping that Zelda can break the open world barrier for Japan.

I have high hopes for Zelda because it's returning to the non-linearity of the NES original. I was more impressed playing through that one than the two N64 titles I grew up with.

:^)

They're getting their manhood back instead of just making little girl games.

>open world barrier
Is it even really a barrier? It seems more like open worlds are nearly universally shit. I can't really single out anything MGS5 and FFXV did particularly poorly, they just failed at being one of the few games that manage to overcome the faults of the genre.

JUST STOP. Oh, and before I forget.
(You)

Why are playing vidya on a console?

That's stupid.

>>Paid online
console/mmos only, plus consoles subs give out free games, not that big of a deal
>>Season passes
there are almost no games that i would say feel incomplete without the season pass
paying $30 or so to add more shit to an already finished game isn't a bad thing, its literally the same concept as expansion packs
>>Games that don't work day 1
an honest to god problem (although not so much recently) but not that big of a deal. wait a week.
>>Remasters
not a problem/don't buy them if you don't like them

Sandbox mode in zelda started with the nes.

The open world part is disappointing, but you would have to be nothing short of a miracle worker to overcome the issues inherent to the genre.

MGSV and FFXV have issues that are independent of the open world part, and if they were structured similarly to their predecessors, would still be issues.

Japan is increasingly pandering to their own country's demographic.

So casuals, perverts, and androgynous fuckbois.

In my opinion mgsv is the worst out of three, but it's probably because i had really high expectations for it.
It failed to deliver in almost all aspects except gameplay, which is actually repetitive as hell if you want to achieve an s rank.
FFXV is short and lacks many things but im enjoying it.

>which is more disappointing

Your fucking "I'm so important" expectation

They're both good. I'm starting to notice a trend where people are shitting on these games because it didn't match up to their personal head canon. Both games are good, even XV just took turnbased and made it real time and better in every way. When watching the game play that's quite literally what it is. Same with V, it made the gameplay much better and more dynamic while giving you 10x more to do than the average MGS did.

MGSV was way more disappointing
I expected MGSV to be amazing and it was terrible
I expected FFXV to be terrible and it ended up being pretty okay

Japan has always been second to the west when it came to video games.

That said, MGSV and FFXV are still great games.

Why don't you name a perfect fucking game. Old fag

Both are unfinished. Both are shit.

Ffxv. At least mgsv gave us some fan service with Quiet.

>perfect fucking game

>Japan has always been second to the west when it came to video games.
Is this a joke? Outside of the PC space, the average western game was shovelware compared to Japanese games just 15 years ago.

What kind of universe do we live in where people can think MGSV is terrible and FFXV isn't?

XV doesn't have the same flaws with it's world desu.

heh

funny guy

But the core combat is absolutely terrible. It's one of the worst action RPGs ever made. The original Kingdom Hearts, a 14 year old game, outdoes it by a factor of 10. Meanwhile MGSV's core gameplay is very satisfying and the different elements feed into each other well.

One is a good game with a pointless open world detracting from it, the other is a terrible game that lets you fish in the hopes you'll forget.

>MGS V is shit
Oh boy, one of my favorite Sup Forums memes!

The core combat is actually good.
How is it bad?

I said it was better than ffxv.

>MGSV is good

Oh boy, one of my favorite Sup Forums memes!

It's hold button to attack. There's no weight. Instead of skillful blocks you have a giant prompt appearing on screen that initiates a cinematic block.

And despite being an action RPG they have the game pause when you use items and do other things, when Kingdom Hearts had this figured out 14 years ago.

FFXV makes Witcher 3's combat look amazing by comparison.

Imagine Geralt and Noctis battling, they'd invent a new genre of dance.

>>>Season passes

If you really believe that bullshit you have no standards.

All of that applies to PC except for paid online.

And yes PC does get remasters.

You're stupid.

FFXV is worse, MGSV is more disappointing.

The signs showed the impending mess of FFXV from a mile away, it was already obviously going to turn out bad and would have only taken incredibly delusional fans by surprise.

MGSV had some of the best trailers for any game, even if they were 90% cutscenes. It looked pretty amazing and so when it turned out so unfinished and the plot so horribly boring it was more of a genuine shock.

How is kingdom hearts any better? In XV you can actually direct your team and the team does more than just support you and die in every fight. The magic is much better in XV and on a whole different level entirely. KH is only good or challenging on critical as well. XV is much better.

nothing will ever top MGSV levels of dissapointment, I'm still upset

>TW3
>BB
>Transistor
>MGSV
>GGXrd series
>FFXV (being niche =/= bad)
>Dishonored 2
>Titanfall 2
>BF1
>DE:MD
>MHGen
>Tropical Dong
>Smash4
>MK8
>Bayo 2
>Pikmin 3
>Digimon
>DOOM

I could probably keep going. You faggots probably see a thread on Sup Forums calling a game shit, then get so wrapped up in board culture that you actually convince yourself it's true. This gen has been decent, and it isn't even close to done yet.

>Japan only consist of MGS and FF
Ok sure
It's not like they killed it at PSX this year or anything

>le Witcher 3 combat is bad

The joke was overplayed in 2015, user.

No, it's real bad.

Wanna explain how? Because while it may not be the best combat, it sure as fuck isn't bad, especially compared to board favorites like Nier.

It's pretty bad user

>user performs an interpretive dance with sign language
It's playable.

It was already explained and proved a hundred million times already. It's fine if you still like it, but it won't change this fact.

And don't go around comparing an AAA game to super low budget ones. Nier is a board favorite despite the garbage combat. Nier 2 is going to fix this anyway.

>a mutated human with faster reaction times and strength compared to normal humans, trained to fight and fence against monsters withing a 2 handed sword like it was a stick is unreasonable.

>Scrawny white boy who twirls a fucking buster sword in one hand like it is weightless is okay without explaination though, because japan

Cloud was infused with Sephiroth cells and mako energy. Not to nerd out or anything, but, you know--eldritch space anomalies and unobtanium.

And this is different from Gerald, how?

They're both mary-stus, and FF7's combat wasn't exactly stellar either. We can agree that they were both underwhelming.

I mean...do you even know what a Mary Sue is, or has Sup Forums really become this retarded?

>japan falls to the open world meme

It can't be helped.

Holding the attack button isn't a practical option because of the mp drain
Why are you spreading lies?

What kind of action game consumes your MP simply for attacking? Don't you see that that limitation was put in there precisely so you wouldn't realize it's a hold button to win game?

how popular is Entourage?

What exactly went wrong with FFXV?

I don't care if Geralt is Poland's literary second-coming, Witcher 3 is good despite him, and good because basically nothing is about him. Sure, Dandelion exaggerates his exploits, but his whole existence is absurd wish fulfillment. He must smell like a fish market.

>Why would bases and units cost resources? Don't you see that that limitation was put in there precisely so you wouldn't realize it's a click button to win game?

Tabata. He cut and replaced most of the story and gutted the combat to make it appeal to the kind of people who like western games.

Nice shitpost.

It's there to stop the game from becoming that.

Try doing that, you'll die. Also you don't have to hold it it, you can tap the button and it will play like the button masher you want it to be. Holding it is there just for simplicity. Because square realized like any smart person, that pressing X over and over on the attack option is redundant.

Every other action RPG doesn't need to force the player to decide to stop attacking in order to prevent the combat from becoming "hold button to win".

The only thing that stops you from attacking is impending danger..the only thing that drains mp is blocking. Try playing it just holding attack and see how far you get once you play the game.

And the reason blocking drains MP is because they made blocking so brain dead that the drain was necessary or else it would break the game. In a good game it would be skill based and would not consume any MP.

No it drains mp because noctis has teleportation power and it needs to be limited. Also the battles are very large and get very chaotic so it isn't really op.

Oh what the fuck
This is the game I wanted to play
Dynamic levels good battle system character development and bad ass Noctis plus being in cities
How the fuck is it okay that they scrapped ALL OF THIS

I think FFXV is more disappointing but the better of the two. Versus XIII looked like it was going to be the greatest game ever made, SE had ten years to turn it into something amazing, and the end result is like a 7 or 8 out of 10. I never cared much for The Phantom Pain. I like Metal Gear, but after MGS4 and Peace Walker, I was eh about the franchise. FF is different since each game is made with a completely different director and staff, unlike the Metal Gear games which all have the same director and common staff members.

No, the block system is quite literally just pressing a button when a giant warning appears on-screen. It's brain dead and that requires an MP drain.

XV is BY FAR more disappointing.

MGSV has polish, fun gameplay, and well directed cutscenes to redeem itself, but shit like this is literally inexcusable for a game that took 10 fucking years to produce

Metal Gears design would be cool if he didn't have that cancer thing sticking outo f his head
