Is it safe to say that the open world meme was a failure? Obviously we can't say for sure about Zelda but that's two AAA titles from major franchises venturing into "open world" that have been a disappointment.
What the hell possessed everyone to jump on this trend? Surely it can't all be Skyrim's fault?
Brayden Diaz
Final Fantasy XV and MGSV are both good games.
Liam Morris
I don't know about mgs, but ff15 has been enjoyable.
William Gutierrez
The Witcher 3 is the only game to do the open world meme right
The rest of these are pretenders. Zelda might be cool though
Colton Moore
I personally liked them but they still felt underwhelming and the majority of people seem to dislike them more than other games in their franchises.
One of the arguments against both is how poor their stories are which is fair.
Ayden Rodriguez
Why doesn't Sup Forums like open world games?
Connor Martinez
Open world can only be good if the game is fully focused on it. MGS works best with small to medium compact environments since it is a stealth game series and you need better level design more than open space for it to work. I can't say much about FF since I haven't played it but BOTW is from an adventure style franchise and it's not cinematic so it's already scoring a few points there. Aside from that from what is shown it seems that the emphasis is definitely gameplay before story. Of course since the game isn't out yet we'll have to see for ourselves if it will be the one game that does open world right.
Thomas Sanders
Normie westernfags eat this shit up.
Lincoln Butler
Because it became a trend in the industry that meant open world=good when it's not necessarily the case. Yes you have freedom but it makes worlds feel empty, it seems to come at the cost of a decent narrative, and open world games are amongst the buggiest.
Adam Perry
Contrarians ironically. Sup Forums used to love open-world, heck, saying "I want Franchise X as an open-world game!" used to be completely over-said
But now, because of that, we hate it.
Truth be told: Open-world only works on certian franchises and genres
Brody Edwards
It's not that open world games are bad, it's that bad games are open world. You can make an open world game with poor core gameplay and nobody notices. As an example, Grand Theft Auto V. The shooting is well below average for the genre, there is no level design, the missions are extremely poor and scripted. But GTA V puts a lot of heart into its world so people enjoy it regardless. Now imagine if GTA V were linear. It would be derided as shovelware.
The same thing is happening with FFXV in that people love it until it goes linear at which point they have to actually pay attention to the game's systems and realize the game is pretty terrible when it isn't letting you fish or drive a car.
If linear games were as lazy as open world games in terms of core gameplay, they'd be crucified. That's why so many games go open world.
Ayden Barnes
MGSV would have been the best in the franchise if not for that poor excuse for a story. XV was great up until chapter 9 when it just rushed you through a corridor. The fact these games were open would wasn't what made them disappointing, it was the fact they sacrificed story in franchises that are known for them (less so mgs but still)
Gabriel Cook
Its the new cool meme to hate
Grayson Anderson
Your the one shoving the meme
MGS5 was garbage because of it's story
The open world is by far the best gameplay in the series
Jaxson Evans
FFXV and MGSV are(from a gameplay standpoint) the best in their respective series. I have confidence in Zelda for sure. There are quirks of course, since Japanese developers are new to open world games. Things like invisible walls, and strange choices here and there but they'll learn and only get better. Western devs nail the open world aspect but the combat is only good if it's some kind of shooting. Western devs suck at close combat so it's either bamham style(which was okay for Batman but WB copypastes this into their other games) or unsatisfying swordfighting. FFXV raises the bar for melee combat in open world games and I'm excited for the future.
Xavier Miller
MGSV is great fun in spite of its open world design, not because of it. If Kojima had cut all the open world elements and instead made the game a series of 30 or so replayable Ground Zeroes-esque missions, with unlocks and hidden stuff in them just like Ground Zeroes, and a progression system that advances over the course of those 30 or so missions, we would have had a much better game.
Carter Clark
FFXV has the worst gameplay in its series. The combat is braindead and weightless, and there isn't a single good boss fight.
Gavin Allen
man fuck you for saying that. i want that so much now.
Camden King
Are you speaking as someone who has played the game or have you only watched gameplay? 20+ hours in and I can't agree with those sentiments at all. At first the combat is kind of jarring but the more you play and start to understand the nuances of the battle system you'll grow to appreciate it.
Matthew Wilson
You probably simply have very poor taste. It's hold button action that is meant to make you feel powerful without actually requiring you do anything. Things like blocking and countering attacks are reduced almost to the level of a QTE.
Gabriel Rivera
Have you actually played the game? Sure you may able to scrape by by holding the button(equivalent to mashing in a game like DMC) but you have a wealth of options to be efficient and get creative. I'm sorry if you or whoever you watched played the game has no imagination but get into a challenging fight and see where the "hold attack to win" strategy gets you.
Brandon Robinson
The nuance of hold dodge until the enemy stops its attack animation so you can hold attack. The combat is brain dead and the only real enemy is the shitty camera.
Michael Ward

Henry Sanders
Fuck off, retard.
Kevin Sanders
No they'll just add the survival meme to it like with MG Survive
Jacob Baker
it's an easy marketing trick. you make a huge world, fill 1% of it with good content and the rest with empty space or repetitive shit, and then focus on the good stuff in all the trailers, demos, etc. people extrapolate and assume you have a massive world full of good content. AAA games live or die on marketing so you can trace most of their design decisions back to "what looks good in a trailer". open world always sounds great, looks great, but only actually works if the developers put in a ridiculous amount of effort.
Dylan Sullivan
The people who used to want to make everything open world were literal retards who just wanted to make everything the next Morrowind. They had shit opinions then and have shit opinions now.
Colton Wilson
wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle
Gabriel Miller
Leave open world RPGs to me.
Jace Green
most of then sacrifice mechanics to make a bigger open world game
Adam Harris
For a first attempt, MGS and FF were great attempts. Not 10/10 yet but they're on the right track. As long as they learn from their mistakes and improve the future looks bright for Japanese open world games.
Adam Price
Compared to 13, 15 was a masterpiece so I'm torn on being happy or disappointed with it.
I'm just glad it wasn't as bad as that fucking pile of shite.
Leo Watson
Zelda looks amazing.
Alexander Diaz
Sup Forums doesn't like stuff when it grows in popularity.
Lincoln Murphy
I'm loving FFXV, I love and will continue to love MGSV, and I have already decided I will buy a Switch just to play Zelda.
I guess it's like what they say "Always do the opposite of what the jew says". With all the corporate shills on this board Sup Forums literally is the fucking Jew.
James Young
> The MGSV is shit meme
Andrew Baker
They don't like to explore and want linear games. That's not say to say it's a bad to like linear games but they believe linear games are better because of their echo chamber.
Josiah Edwards
Barring Xenoblade, japs just haven't got hang of creating open world games yet. I really hope that Zelda isn't going to fall into the same category as MGSV or FFXV, which both are very good at best, but have obvious signs that the game went through troubled development and had to be pushed out somewhat unfinished.
Jaxon Carter
>call out games for having a shit open world with nothing to do and nothing to explore >"you guys just don't like open world!"
Is that why Sup Forums likes XC and XCX?
Sebastian Rivera
This guy gets it. They'll get better and I'm really excited about what we'll see in the future
Luke Ramirez
friendly reminder that monolithsoft are helping with BotW's world design. The time for hype is now.

TPP is an unfinished, poorly-written, polished turd.
Mason Cook
It's the only MGS game where the story being bad isnt a huge impact
Joseph Reed
It's unfinished and poorly written, but the game plays very well. Better than almost all of its competition that year.
