If you want to hack it, you'd need to get it used, hacking part is easy, the hard part is that everyone in the hacking community wants to be a special snowflake and are really hard to work with

It pretty much gutted what little inventory was even left in brick and mortar stores, and hiked the price of the few vendors left on digital sellers for consoles and memory cards.
The problem is that, as far as the west is concerned, Sony had already pretty much discontinued the vita. They were no longer sending inventory to brick and mortar stores, and the ones that still had any stock were liquidating them.
It's literally all Sony's fault, and no one elses.
Also the memory cards are retardedly overpriced, and even then have an absurdly high failure rate for what they are, as well as really awful read/write speeds.

The point is that not everybody feels like waiting around for a game to maybe become playable on their cracked console. Until piracy on the Vita is simpler and more reliable for new titles, it's not going to take off.

You're right with regards to newer titles (can't even think of any newer titles that interest me) though, since this only worked out due to the JP version being on an older PSN update.

I've got a N3DS and I've got to be honest, it's the most disappointing console I've owned. And I have a PS4 that's been more a USB charger than a console.
It's bound to be the best hacked handheld at some point. There's just not a big homebrew community like on the 3DS.
My only problem with it is unlike with my PSPGo it has no TV Out and no way to play with a controller unless you use a Vita TV, which I have. Don't know how much of a hassle it is to switch cards between them if they're not on the latest firmware.

Because the 3DS had games people wanted to play and flash cards use MicroSD.
The Vita does not have games people want to play and it uses a proprietary memory format that costs far more than microSDs for far less storage space.
The Vita is still so fucking expensive and you still have to buy an overpriced proprietary memory card for it.
It isn't worth it. I'm just going to wait for Vita emulation at this point.
