Neither.

It's modal so it doesn't fit the "berlin interpretation"

Tabletop adaptation really.

Musketeer best waifu

I guess it's theoretically at the far, far end of "Roguelite", as it shares...random dungeon generation and character death in common with Rogue?

But that's a stretch.

Is that new?`

Shit taste.

Not at all like Rogue.

Uh, few months old I'm not exactly sure how many. It's just a reskin of the arbalest more or less. It was a kikestarter reward

>lite

Nah man, I'm starting to doubt I'll ever beat it without being a wikibitch(which I won't).

It's like myst all over again.

Its fucking godlike, who cares about the label?

Does it matter?

>It was a kikestarter reward
Oh that's why I don't have it.

Thought they had some DLC stuff out.

it's obviously a roguelite, what are you, dumb?

1. Download Rogue
2. Play Rogue
3. Play this game
4. Does it play like Rogue?
5. ???
6. No it's not a roguelike.

2017 is when the expansion comes out and if you want the musketeer heres a link mediafire.com/file/5n6mcutcjcqctvw/musketeer_and_trinkets_for_nonbackers136build13870.zip

I like girls with guns what can I say

wait so this musketeer character will work like mods do right? and since its just an arbalest reskin, will arbalest trinkets work on her?

ask /rlg/
no i am kidding please leave our general the fuck alone holy fuck you people are AWFUL

It's an entirely separate character so she has her own trinkets. But she's the same thing as the arbalest, only with matching sounds/anims and abilities.

And pretty much yes, if you install it run the localization thing

what localization thing?

It's a dizzying blow to both body and brain.

wait nevermind i checked the readme

>But that's a stretch.
That's all any rogue-lites have in common, actually then might even only have random generation OR perma-death.
According to indy devs the fact that is has more than one thing in common with rogue means it is a full blown actual genuine rogue-like.

I'm tossing up whether to buy this. The theme looks great, but I've heard a lot of people call this a horrifically unbalanced, brutally unfair fiasco lategame.

Roguelite is usually random map generation, custom character progression through new equipment, skills or stats and permadeath. So basically everything Rogue is but for tile based movement and turns. Or, in other words, a real time, action Rogue-like.

It's a roguelike, because "roguelite" is a term invented by autistic Roguelike purists because they don't want to share their little pillow fort with Binding of Isaac

The games not bullshit hard, you just have minimize risk as much as possible. You can get out RNG'd but you can also get the same advantages from the RNG.

Some heroes are better than others, it can't be helped but it's not a huge difference.

best post

Agreed

Threadly reminder that you can alter nearly everything in the game using notepad from how many targets an ability can hit to resistances to amount of food and shit per stack etc.

That's bullshit. Fire Emblem, Sid Meier's Civilization, X-Com or Diablo 2 aren't roguelites. Neither is this game.

darkest dungeon at first may seem really hard, but it's all about creating team compositions that synergise well and playing smart

it's like XCOM where everyone always cries RNG -- games like these are all about properly managing your risk. sure sometimes you have no choice but to take a risk, but if you're constantly at the point where you need to take a 70% dice roll on whether you'll live or die you are probably playing the game wrong. it's always good to have some sort of contingency plan and with the way DD works, you shouldn't lose many (if any) characters once you get the hang of things

Thanks user!

It's a roguefuckyourself.

You can finish the game without anyone dying.

A roguelike is a game which is literally like the game Rogue.

A roguelite is a game that doesn't borrow its core gameplay or genre from Rogue, but has a collection of elements inspired and came to be associated with Rogue like random generation, permanent death, and building a character potentially differently every game.

FASTER

...

It's hard in the beginning, then you find something that works and the game becomes dull repetition. I had fun with the game, but I doubt I will ever play the expansion.

STAND STILL WHILE TIDE TURNING

>get Man-at-Arms at weald
>weald is now easy as fuck
I'm loving these crit treebrach smackdowns that deal 12 damage

it's just a glorified mobile game with nice art

play kancolle isntead

>it's not broken, it's risk management

Well I really like X-com and Bloodbowl, and Bloodbowl seves you astonishingly bad luck as a matter of course. That sells me on Darkest Dungeon then.

excuse me

Is it any good now? I've been eyeing it for a long time and for a while people were saying they completely ruined it by making the difficulty ramp up to ridiculous levels. Did they fix it?

...

The game isn't really hard. Don't go into it expecting an in-depth TRPG type deal - the actual combat and mechanics are fairly shallow. It's more akin to X-com and is all about the risk management, knowing when to push and when to quit.

That said, yeah a lot of the stuff later on is basically just doing what you know you're meant to do and praying the RNG doesn't fuck you.

>it's just a glorified mobile game with nice art
this desu

Its RNG shit.

boatsluts happen to be the same, nerd

It's a jrpg.

Quick question: Is the Antiquarian actually a useless class or am I just not using her right?

It's always roguelite, because the moment you call something roguelike you'll get frothing autists loudly declaring everything that isn't the original Rogue is roguelite.

She makes money and is inept in every other way.

The Vita version worth it?
I can't really bring myself to play games on the PC these days, but I'm worried the Vita version might be out of date or something.

>it's just a glorified mobile game with nice art

She's useless, yes. She's just there to grind more gold quickly. Which is useless because at the start when you would appreciate more gold input, you cant risk taking her. Later when you can be more selective, you are better off doing a long dungeon instead for more loot than you can carry. There's just no good time or place for her. They should have given her a decent heal over time, something the game sorely lacks, to make her viable instead of her shit heal and shit buff.

You are on a clock on NG+ tho. Grinding more gold quicker is way more imperative.

Hag Witch keeps fucking me.

What's the dream team for beating this bitch?

Anyone that can attack the 3rd/4th row at any place. Jester and Hellion are pretty cool, on the top of my mind. Stack them bleeds, brother.

meant for

Arbalest w/Battlefield Bandage, Vestal w/Judgement, Houndmaster w/Lick wounds, Hellion w/Adrenaline rush.

BAM! They all can hit from range and self heal. Never try to release the one in the pot, just focus fire on the hag, have the person do a self heal when they get released. Vestal group heals as necessary

Fuck these guys

It's rogue1/3game.

The game's character and item progression stops after the first third of the game. After that there's nothing new, just grind grind grind all the same.

95% of the people who buy the game never finish it. There's no point really.

Haven't played at all since the full version came out. Is it still full of disgusting PROT shit everywhere? It slows the battle pace to a crawl, and has only has like 2 debuffs against it that have to go through a fucking resist check and don't even remove all of the goddamn PROT.

It's fucking cancer. Early builds that didn't have this shit were so much more fun.

>* aren't roguelites
Of course they aren't. They are full proper Rogue-likes because they meet one thing on the Berlin Interpretation. Indy devs and Steam tell us this so it must be true!

Come on. The ONLY enemy that has PROT that actually is cause for concern is the crushers in the cove. And there is an easy solution: ALWAYS bring the plague doctor to the cove with noxious blast and battlefield medicine. Her DoTs wreck the crusher(and everything else in the cove) and completely negate the arterial pinch.

You have to switch up your comps for different dungeons. Have to.

PROT still exists. What problems do you have with it?

How do I cope going to level 3? I hear every enemy gets an upgrade, so I'm trying to get max durability without sacrificing damage potential. What team do I build?

Came here to post this.

I'm a TOTALLY MLG player LIKE yourself SO to me NO ENEMY causes concern BUT PROT is still PURE SHIT because of THE REASONS said ABOVE.

Leper is your friend.

It's a grindfest.

Doesn't the game need ASCII graphics and some arbitrary amount of items and creatures (last I checked it was more than what Rogue had) before it can be classified as a roguelike?

For example DoomRL is not a roguelike but ADoM is.

>Do a boss run
>This motherfucker shows up
The greater the best, the greater the glory.

He's fine if your stun hits him before he acts.

I've wiped him in 2 turns, got a sweet trinket just before the boss room.

>tfw vestal and MAA summons
>tfw free turns forever to restore all health and stress.

What I didn't like about the game was how grindy it was.
At a certain point you just have to start spamming mid tier dungeons to get enough drops to actually upgrade your high tier team with high tier items so they can actually do high tier dungeons.

Did they ever fix that? Or is that just a "feature?"

nigga it doesn't even have real permadeath since there's no game over screen

Is Kantai Collection a fucking roguelike cuz you can technically lose your boatsluts?

Underrated

>About to kill the Fulminating Prophet
>Doing a dim torch run with some Moon rings
>A room before the boss
>camp, buff up an all that shit
>get out of the room, Shambler spawns
>literally my first time fighting the nigger and knew nothing about him
>shuffle
>shuffle
>25 stress per hit by little tentacle cancers
>they buff their damage and prot with each passing round
>shambler left on 4 before a little nigglet critted my arbalest and vestal
>How quickly the tide turns
>This is not a place for weak and foolhardy
>party wipe
>lose all of muh good trinkets
>retry with another team and actually die on the prophet this time
>gonna go for a 3rd time
>VVULF IS PAYING A VISIT

I swear if this game wants you to feel like shit, it does everything in its power.

That's not Grave Robber

Get it and git gud.

Come back from a long day of sending poor sods to their deaths, see this. What do?

>not bringing a man at arms
You have no one to blame but yourself.

Ask for more.

I've had this fucker show up on the literal first tile outside of the start room

>not Plague Doctor
Go home and rethink life.

Embrace the nymphomaniac quirk and destress.

I wish there was more stuff of the other girls. Plague doctor is great, but overrepresented.

Im using her in the early game though. I thought her main point was pretty much use at low levels because everything at that point is easy.

>Town event, no quest level restrictions
>Sweet I can send my team A on beginner long run for mad dosh
>Forget to equip them with trinkets
>O-ok they're all upgraded anyway, nothing can kill 50hp Lepper
>Light level drops
>Notice I also have no torches with me
>More loot for me
>R-right?
>About halfway through it turns out I also don't have enough food with me
>Psshh, no biggie I just won't camp
>Party on verge of affliction
>Find shambler altar
>Cool, free loot! No way that nigger can do any harm, my dudes are veterans afterall, I'll wipe the floor with him.
>Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.mp3
>Shuffle
>Shuffle
>Lepper and Crusader have no way of getting in front because lol no holy lance and lol slow Lepper
>meanwhile those little tentacles maxed out thier buffs and hit me like trucks
>Finally after 3 shuffles and endless CLAPPERCLAW I postition my party well
>The same turn my vestal named after my waifu dies
>Only healer I had in the ENTIRE roster
>It's a dizzying blow to body and brain.jpg
>The rest of the team instantly virtues and shambler is dead two turns later
>I sure hope for some great ancestral trinkets
>it's a fucking ancestral map
>Abbandon quest in shame

Fuck I haven't played this in ages and had no idea there's DLC planned. Hype af

THe game isn't as unbalanced as people say, unless you use only use Occultist really early on.

The game will be really fun for the first 20 hours or so, but the game takes around 80 Hours to actually completely beat and tedium and grind will probably get to you before then. Still very much worth getting though. The problems don't really manifest until the endgame, and even those can be modded out to be more manageable.

This. You have to protect the poor soul that can't carry a torch

The Great Debate:
strawpoll.me/11772513

It's neither of those things.

I like roguelikes and roguelites, but the term has become a trendy catch-all for a game with only only one save slot per playthrough, where you don't get retries, and where characters you lose stay dead. They usually have procedural levels and exploration. Darkest Dungeon meets those criteria, but that is where the similarities end.

"Roguelike" really just means "hard" to most people. It doesn't even really connote an RPG. Its modern iteration is built off of Dark Souls, not Rogue or any roguelike. I'm glad so many people are coming to prefer games like this to so-called "movie games" but I do wish they'd not completely change the meaning of the term.

>"Roguelike" really just means "hard" to most people. It doesn't even really connote an RPG. Its modern iteration is built off of Dark Souls, not Rogue or any roguelike.
You're retarded. Nobody thinks that.

Roguelikes are turn-based games with procedural level generation and permadeath. Unlike most games, you're not meant to "win" a roguelike in one go. They're meant to be hard, and victory will require many restarts so you can learn from your mistakes and try do do a little better every time. They often have a strong trial and error approach and you have be able to weigh risk vs reward.

Roguelites are just games that have a mindset comparable to roguelikes and take one or more elements from it (usually permadeath at least), but don't make any real effort to stick to the old "Rogue" template.

I know exactly what a roguelike actually is, but most people do not. Have you not noticed that "roguelike" has become a marketing buzzword? People who don't know what ASCII is are learning this word and using it, and even just last night Uncle Death in Let It Die said that his game was a roguelike sort-of-thing. (It's actually a Souls-like, but it has random floors.) Face it, it's gone more or less mainstream, and what you mean when you say roguelike isn't what most people think it means.

That doesn't make you wrong and them right, but I'm telling you that today's "roguelikes" or "roguelites" draw more inspiration from Souls games than any actual roguelike...because Souls is popular and sells, and roguelikes are for dweebs and usually free.
