I have an unhealthy amount of knowledge about Japanese games. If you are looking for something new to play -- even if you don't like Japanese games -- tell me a couple of games, themes, mechanics, or ideas in games that you like, and I should be able to recommend something that you'll enjoy.
Caveats: 1: I like retro games, so you may have to put up with controls that weren't future-proof. 2: They made be untranslated, but I will at least limit my recommendations to games that can be enjoyed without knowing Japanese. 3: You may have to put up with japanese teenagers flashing their panties at you. This is regardless of genre or how serious the game is.
Sebastian Campbell
recommend me something like deus ex
Ayden Collins
Games I like: >Nier >Solatorobo: Red the Hunter >Cave Story >Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix I'm in general very fond of character action games, action rpgs, general Zelda styled titles, anything with Japanese kemono art, and some sidescrollers if the game is very free and doesn't feel lonely (no Metroid).
Recommend me something. Try to make it something I've not heard of.
Adam Collins
I want to play Horse Cave 2
James Thompson
>2: They made be untranslated come on now son this aint /jp/
Also give me something like dragon age origins you know, RPG combat with a shitload of abilities
Dominic Smith
Recommend me something I could spend a month gitting gud at. Ideally an FPS.
Asher Cooper
Give me something that condemns otaku culture. Featuring strong themes of anti-waifuism and anti-hermitism, with gameplay that meaningfully supports the theme.
Dominic Martinez
Gimme something like GTA, pham.
Jace Gray
Have you ever played Binary Domain?
I can tell you already that you'll love Threads of Fate, and by extension Brave Fencer Musashi. Both PS1. If you've played both of these, how about Magic Knight Rayearth on Sega Saturn?
Brandon Fisher
I like comfy city builders where the characters excercise autonomy like Majesty I've played all the kairosoft games already
Jacob Lee
what is the best game to fap to and why is it still AA2
Anthony Thomas
I like games that appear to me as 'hidden gems' mainly due to how unappealing to the west they would seem. Games that come to mind are the Goemon series, something like Incredible Crisis, all sorts of rhythm games or ridiculous shooters like parodius, etc. I know these aren't a great theme to string together, but I want to know if Japan is still making fun, interesting games like this. I think I've played most of the older games like this, even some that have been fan translated, but if there's any new Japanese games like that I haven't really seem them myself.
Henry Fisher
Games I enjoy >Guitar hero >devil may cry >sleeping dogs >dead space
Michael Myers
>Threads of Fate, Brave Fencer Musashi, and Magic Knight Rayearth I'll give those a try, thanks. I've already heard of them, but I haven't played them, so I'll be sure to give them a go.
Evan Clark
Give me something like Shadow of the Colossus and Inside.
Yes I am familiar with Ueda and Chahi, no Dragon's Dogma is not what I'm looking for.
Grayson Lopez
One thing I'd like to clarify is that I'm trying to give recommendations of games that I think you folks would enjoy, not games that are identical to others. So 'something like x' might be a no-go, but I might be able to recommend something else you'd like as a result.
That's why I said I'll limit myself to games that can be enjoyed without understanding the text.
I also want to play Horse Cave 2.
Ever sank time into a shmup before? Mushihimesama Futari is my personal favorite.
For some other GIT GUD games, in particular a third person shooter, have a look at Gunvalkyrie on the original Xbox. Crazy game with absurd controls. Seems absurdly difficult, but when you finally do git gud, you can do crazy shit like clearing entire stages without ever touching the ground.
This one is a platformer, but have a look at the webm here. Check out Umihara Kawase as well. I think you may be impressed.
No More Heroes
Yakuza senpai
Oliver Barnes
I want a game made in Japan but has no Japanese influences that's not a game made by kojima
Lucas Nelson
games I enjoy > league of legends > counter strike >overwatch
Sebastian Price
>no Japanese influences literally impossible. Resident Evil 4
James Campbell
games I enjoy > league of legends > counter strike >overwatch
Help me out /jp/-chan
Owen Harris
Binary Domain has nothing in common with Desu Ex besides being set in the future and being sort of about the fusion of man and machine.
Hudson Lewis
not him but i recommend a bullet in the head
Ryan Wood
Kek
Caleb Clark
Despite the awful name and cover, you may well enjoy Metropolismania on PS2. It has quite a cult following in Japan.
Sealed Room Breed 2
>new Japanese games like this I could do tons of retro recommendations, but for specifically newer games, there's actually quite a bit, too. I'm sure you've heard of Nier, but have you actually ever played it? Some recent(ish) favorites that I think will go down as cult favorites in the future are Yomawari, Danganronpa AE, (Wii version of) Rodea, Gurumin, and Trillion: God of Destruction.
Here's a hell of a stretch. Your list of games made me think of arcadey third person action games with awesome music in space. So how about Burning Rangers?
Sorry, I'm not familiar with Inside. It looks like a horror game? I'm not seeing the relation to Shadow of the Colossus, but go check out Hellnight on PS1. It has an english release in europe.
Metal Wolf Chaos? Dynamite Cop?
puzzle and dragons

I like stuff like Final Fantasy, fantasy with tech thrown in, less strict on setting and the like as long as it's cool. Fun turn based games like that, with at least decent stories and characterization. If the story/characters are really good I'll even be willing to put up with sub-par gameplay.
Also, more stuff like Dragon Quest. Swords and sorcery style jrpgs. Other than FF, Chrono Trigger, and DQ I don't really play a lot of JRPGs.
Thomas Hernandez
It's also a sort of tactical shooting game with a bit of stealth and RPG elements.
Sorry, it's a bit unrealistic to try and think of a game that's exactly like another one.
If you want a good first person sci-fi action RPG, I still haven't played anything as good as the first System Shock.
Not obscure at all, but it sounds like you haven't played Legend of the Dragoon yet. I'd recommend doing that.
Tyler Thompson
Not OP, but check out radiant historia

>>new Japanese games like this Yeah I have heard of Nier, and true that the aesthetic seemed sort of that standard "really cool looking, kind of dark" look, but then again I do hear it brought up as an interesting title regardless. Dangan Ronpa I do love, I've needed to play after 2, and Gurumin I actually have. Trillion looks kind of neat but strategy games can tire me out even if they're easy.
I think of other games such as Tomba, and...I guess just colorful, different games. Ace Attourney kind of comes to mind despite being mainstream, just cause I like a niche concept done well. Like being a fire fighter, or the game Power Shovel. Which reminds me of that Kaiju game that's supposed to come out, city shrouded in darkness or something? I love the idea of being a survivor, that's what sells it for me.
Evan Gonzalez
Also a great recommendation.
I want to recommend you Wachenroder, but that game still hasn't been translated. There might be a walkthrough or something, though.
I was also impressed by Shadow Hearts and Covenant.
Benjamin Myers
Seriously, go play Nier. It's not interesting because it's "cool-looking and kind of dark," the game is just ridiculous. I'm not saying anything more because I don't want to spoil what about it makes it so interesting, but I'm nearly positive it's the game you're looking for.
Evan Baker
op are you going to show us the contents of the horse cave or not
Owen Gomez
One time I was at a programming lecture, and the guest speaker was talking about the first game he ever made way back in the sixties (or something) on punch cards, "a little game called Horse Space." I freaked out thinking about all of the possibilities, and approached him when was done speaking, asking if he still had the source code for it and if I could play it.
Turns out the game was called "Horse Race." I guess we still have to just keep waiting, user.
Although you're cool, so go play Speed Power Gunbike.
Charles Brown
Well, about an hour has passed, so I'll leave this thread with a couple of games I was hoping I would get to recommend.
>Abalaburn on PS1 Pretty much a proto god-hand. The controls, camera angles, and ridiculous beat em up combat are all very similar.
>Love and Destroy One of the coolest mech games on PS1. Full dual analog controls, and the first thing it does is throw you into a fully-animated city with trains, cars, buildings, and a giant worm creature attacking you. You can blow up pretty much everything, from the buildings all the way down to individual cars. Blow up enough houses and you even get little sprites of people running around. Short, awesome boss rush game, and you also get to date cute girls drawn by the guy who made Video Girl AI.
>Napple Tale Cute dreamcast platformer with amazing music by Yoko Kanno and a great dream-like world.
>UFO: A Day in the Life - Beautiful game on PS1 about an alien who crash-lands in an apartment complex, and has to observer the daily life of its residents and how they interact with one another throughout the course of one day to find his friends.
There's a ton more of course, but I've gotta go. Till next time.
Henry Young
late reply but thanks i'll check out binary domain
