Start with Baldur's Gate 2 and get Imoen romance mod.

I have slight masochist tendencies so I prefer low level D&D but it's understandable if the MISS MISS MISS combat isn't to everyone liking.
2 just blows to insane qualities with the spells almost right from the getgo since you start at lv7-9.

obviously start from the first one, it's a great game and ignore idiots like i wouldn't even mod the game, maybe if you feel like it add some high res mods. there's also the "unfinished business" mod (nor sure about the name) which is apparently some sort of restoration mod but never tried it. might be fun though

Baldurs gate 1. For your first time, play a fighter or a class with good health and AC so you don't get exploded into chunks from one hit.

1.
I hate how they handled the characters though, killed off my bro Ajantis in 2 for no fucking reason yet kept Jaheira.

D&D games in general are infamous for the "Buff Stacking". You don't have to worry about it in the first game as much as the second one, but it is when you have your wizard and/or cleric buff the group or fighter to high hell before a rough encounter.

Baldur's Gate 1 will take you from level 1 to around levels 7 to 9. Baldur's Gate 2 will take you to near level 20, where some of the more crazier enemies start appearing.

Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal

In that order.

there's so much combat and it's all boring as fuck

Good luck

This just seems highly unorthodox.

Remember that if your main character dies, you have to reload you save. There are always surplus casters that can take this role so you don't have to. If your main character is a caster, you will have less health and are more likely to get murdered. Especially at lower levels and what spells you choose. This is even true in the second game. At that point, clerics will begin getting resurrection spells, but the game will always put you are a game over screen if your main honcho dies

does the series have good speech checks? I always play rogues/bards/etc. to get the fun dialogue options, does BG1&2 deliver or should I just play a combat class?

Start with the first one. Also don't play with EE so you can experience the glory of infinite summons and a less annoying ruleset for low level d&d

wait, they killed ajantis? where do they tell that cause i don't have any memory of that

REMEMBER ME

No low int dialogue.
Best you can hope might be line or three class specific ones.

this post is the truth.
there's literally no reason to skip 1 (or 2 for that matter), tales of the sword coast isn't really necessary, i don't remember it adding to the story at all and it's just mainly for a few new areas and quests

Yes, you are the DLC I didn't buy.

jesus christ don't bring that shit in here. i've loved baldur's gate for ages, played the shit out of it too. i had to try (and consequently play through) siege of dragonspear just to see what the complaining was all about and i have to say, it sucked. not even counting the transgender character, which sucked too ofcourse)

It has a few but the game was conceptualized as an RPG/RTS hybrid and is combat focused.

BG1 is very slow, basic in terms of scope and hard to get into.
BG2 throws more crazy high fantasy stuff at you and is much more exciting to play as a result. You will need to read BG1's story on wiki first to know what's what, but it's easy to wrap your head around.

how is bg1 hard to get into?

Not him, personally I never found it that hard to get into, the first few hours can be difficult but by the time you get some good armour and build your team up you should have no trouble.
One thing I never liked about these games was the backtracking quests, constantly wandering back and forth sections of the map essentially delivering messages for retard NPC's.

Low level D&D isn't fun. You don't get to the really good stuff until BG2, I'm just trying to save OP time.

I played BG2 first and that didn't stop it from becoming my favorite game.

I can't get into it at all because the older DnD ruleset it's using has lolrandom attributes distribution and no feats which makes non-spellcasting classes progress like shit. I can only play Icewind Dale 2 or newer.

Not him, but I've made half a dozen aborted attempts to get into the game and it never stuck.

high charisma will make people more likely to believe you when trying to bullshit them in a few particular cases but that's pretty much it

yeah i never thought it was hard to get into either and you can get pretty good armor from the candlekeep shop, at least splint mail, if not platemail.
i beg to disagree, i like low lvl d&d, but that's not to say that some people don't like it.
that just sounds weird to me. the only time i actually didn't play through bg1 was when i tried out the bard and one other class which i can't remember

...

I honestly don't get it because I usually am overwhelmed with DnD stuff, but due to BG using an older ruleset, it's simple as shit.
Honestly whenever I try to play NWN I don't know what the fuck to do due to the huge amount of feats and shit available. I might try it again should I ever finish BG1 and 2 but I'm currently stuck in Baldur's Gate in 1 since the city is so fuckhuge and I'm honestly just overwhelmed by it.

The "assassins" that you killed when you enter Windspear Hills has Ajantis among them. You need Keldorn, or Amoen to point this out though.

I could not bring myself to finish it...

It never existed in my play through and never will.

personally I found icewind dale easier to get into and from there finally got into playing baldurs gate

not canon

It's worth it to hear Jahira's passionate screaming.

It's because in BG1 you walk around from level 1-4 and do nothing else. You need to scrounge up enough XP from Xvarts and wild dogs to reach level 2 so you don't die to one arrow.

From the standpoint of exploring the great outdoors it's a fantastic game for RPG standards. But let's face it, most of the maps are empty with maybe 2-3 encounters in each given zone.
So you walk around with your slow party and unvocer the map. Then you repeat it in the next 12 regions.

Much of BG1s charm comes from the story and the sense of discovery therein. By now everybody knows what's going to happen. All big reveals have been spoiled to anyone 10 years ago. You also know of the fun you can have in BG2.
The result is that playing BG1 means being stuck in some empty woodlands, watching the boring versions of actual characters kill dogs with boring weapons and amazing spells like grease. All the while the player knows that actual fun could be had in BG2.

Replaying the full series is just code for wanting a Charname with OP stats due to tomes from BG1.

>dem feels when you first enter baldur's gate
sure, i knew it was going to be big since the city was 1 of the 5 discs (although in practice, more like one of the 4 discs) but still.

Start with 1.

I would recommend a fighter or cleric as a first character if you are new to old DnD games.

1

How do people always write names wrong that are spelled out in the image they are posting?

because they think they are cool when using shitty memes

The second. I mean, why would you start at the first of anything?

Bitch dont know bout min-maxin.

Bow build? never miss. Eleven archer specialization. Proceed to kill every mother fucker in a 10 mile radius.

Orc warrior/zerk with 18/00 Str.

Rogue.... im sorry I meant shit mage: dex i guess?

Mage - buffs and knock spell only. Watch your team wombo-combo

It's reddit. Reddit needs to know something is worth it and approved by the community so it doesn't find its reddit self outside of future possible circlejerks. Basically he needs someone to tell him to "go for it, bro".

>Baldur's Gate was conceptualized as an RPG/RTS hybrid

Sounds like Sup Forums.

for u user

Well, it doesn't play much like an RTS.

It pretty much does in BG1. The combat aspect, not the basebuilding aspect of course.

So dont press spacebar and let the bodies hit the floor

I press spacebar about once every 1 second of game time while I play BG2

Why? BG2 is actually easier than BG1 cause you dont auto-die when you get hit with a 1d6 dagger.

I generally run 2 warriors and 2 clerics. I just laugh my way through most encounters
