Federation Force, a 3DS theme, and a release of the best game of the series on the eshop.
How can other 30th anniversaries even compete?
Cameron Edwards
I'm actually looking forward to finally giving this game a shot.
Jeremiah Long
>they're not even gonna try to fix any of the problems >it's just a straight port
So guys. What was that about Nintendo wanting to forget Other M?
Elijah Campbell
It's really not nearly as bad as some people like to say it is, at least gameplay wise. So you'll probably have fun with it.
Expect a really poorly done story, though. Although I do feel like the claims that Samus is 'RUINED FOREVER' because of it aren't really true either.
The main thing is that Adam sucks.
Caleb Gutierrez
>It's really not nearly as bad as some people like to say it is It's a Metroid game with 3 hours of unskippable cutscenes, a mode dedicated to watching the cutscenes while the game plays itself, doors that lock behind you so you can't explore anything, and probably the worst sins of all: auto aim, auto health regen, auto missile regen, and auto-dodge mechanics. This basically removes all tension from the gameplay since you can button mash your way to the end.
"It's not a bad game". Go to bed Sakamoto.
Jordan Morgan
It really doesn't sound like you've actually played it.
Kevin Price
It's Nintendo's attempt at a story based game.
The thing is Nintendo has never written a good story in their entire history (Besides maybe Mother series but only because Itoi is an actual author)
Adam Gray
primefags on suicide watch, sorry your halo clone is officially retconned now
Jose Parker
Then tell me exactly what I said that was wrong about it.
Daniel Stewart
The thumbs-up sign had been used by the Galactic Federation for ages. Me, I was known for giving the thumbs-down during briefing. I had my reasons, though... Commander Adam Malkovich was normally cool and not one to joke around, but he would end all of his mission briefings by saying, "any objections, lady?" He was joking, but others weren't. At the time I felt surrounded by people who treated me like a child or used kid gloves because I was a woman. And yet, with Adam, I was grateful for the nod... My past has left me with an uneasy soul, and as a result, it touched me on some level that Adam would acknowledge that past by calling me something delicate -- like "Lady." And I knew more than anyone that every word from Adam was deliberate. My thumbs-down was a two-fold response: a sign of derision at being called a lady, and a signal of my complete understanding of the mission orders. The other soldiers were always willing to support me with easy smiles, despite the fact that I clearly had so much yet to learn. Among them was Anthony. In the face of his well-meaning behavior, and that of other soldiers, my response was to become increasingly bitter. I was a child, always with something to prove. A chip on my shoulder. And I was angry. I felt that if I let my guard down, I would easily by broken. And beyond that, I was scared. But even in the naivete of my youth, I could see in Adam's joking manner how close he felt to me. Adam knows my past. And he knows me better than anyone else. Confession time. Because I was so young when I lost both of my parents, there's no question I saw Adam as a father figure. When I rebelled against him, I knew I could get away with it. And his paternal compassion in the face of my rebellion reinforced the special bond I felt with him. I understood well that chances were slim that I would ever find anyone that understood me like Adam. And yet... When the time came, I still left his side. I was so young. Young and naive...
Nathan Murphy
Why aren't you playing the best Metroid since Super?
you have no excuse now.
Aiden Miller
>It's really not nearly as bad as some people like to say it is
Your right, its worse. At least they had the good grace to allow you to cheese your way through this shit fest from minute one.
Cooper Clark
So I'm right, then?
You just spewed out talking points with weird exaggerations. That nonsense about the dodge and "tension" seems especially suspect.
Chase Reyes
>tfw a hentai doujin had more respect for Samus than Other M
But please, continue to defend Nintendo for no reason other than brand loyalty. I've got all night to provide counterarguments.
Levi Allen
>muh blank slate had a personality to disrespect
primefag feminist sjw scumbag
Adam Johnson
At least it was more faithful to the franchise unlike that DmC tier abortion from retro.
Sebastian Gonzalez
I've played the game several times in both normal and hard modes. I know how the game actually is.
The fact that you're continuing to field the question says it all, really.
Angel Ortiz
>muh VIDEO GAME CHARACTER didn't need a whiny personality to interrupt the gameplay every 5 seconds
Fixed that for you.
Charles Bailey
>I've played the game several times The fact that you denied the existence of a core mechanic of the game says otherwise.
Aaron Martinez
actually I guess "field" is the wrong term here. replace it with "avoid" instead.
Robert Howard
>tfw Other M's retardation ruins the best moment of Fusion
Colton Jenkins
What's the hate for Prime? Moving it to first person?
It still has the exploration, it still keeps Samus as a bounty hunter that takes down eldritch horrors every working day and isolationist feeling with some of the levels.
More than I can say about Other M. This is coming from a Super fanboy.
Jose Lewis
It's even worse, Adam CPU asks Samus would Adam sit in a commander chair and order her to die which real Adam does in this game.
Jordan Richardson
> >Virtual console >Port
Lincoln Nguyen
That, too. It makes it look like a taunt by the computer rather than a rhetorical question.
William Miller
I did no such thing. I was calling you out for blowing the dodge mechanic out of proportion.
Try spamming it against Phantoon and see if it removes any tension at all, much less keeps you safe. oh wait you clearly haven't played the game
Brayden Edwards
>Other M was my first metroid because it was like 10 bucks >Didn't really research so I didn't know how reviled this game was. >Was alright. Really questionable gameplay choices like press X to not die, can't move in first person mode, ect. but I wouldn't say it was a bad time. >Definitely intrigued in more of the franchise. >eventually get around to fusion >mfw realizing like 90 percent of Other M was taken almost directly from Fusion
Side point, is this the only Nintendo game to lose value? Almost everything new or even used can be sold at or above it's original MSRP except for this one.
Adrian Sanchez
A lot of people bitched about fusion being too wordy which is ironic since even with the computer talking and samus inner monologue scenes there really wasn't that much, and I really liked them since they added to her character and gave her a bit of backstory, but only just enough to know that she used to work with someone named adam and that he was someone she trusted.
This... this is just a wall of shit.
Jayden White
>Try spamming it against Phantoon Your only example is a boss that's at the VERY end of the game. I think my argument still holds up.
If you thought Phantoon was hard, then please reconsider your life choices.
Joshua Reyes
Not him but you got btfo.
Liam Bennett
Adding to this, the game is specifically designed around the sense move. There's so many enemy attacks that come out super quickly to encourage you to use it. And if you're focusing on just simply spamming it you're probably not getting damage in very efficiently at all.
Kevin Cook
Not him but no u
Jack Nelson
>When Adam chose who would live he chose incorrectly
I wonder if this is literally him admitting he's a fuckup for killing himself for no reason. But that would too sane.
Jace Reyes
>And if you're focusing on just simply spamming it you're probably not getting damage in very efficiently at all. Nevermind the fact that you get an instant charge after every use of it, and you get unlimited uses. Sure sounds hardcore.
Gabriel Barnes
>you're probably not getting damage in very efficiently at all It gives you a free charge every single time you slap your dick on the d-pad.
Evan Price
look buddy, weve all had enough time to digest it,its ass.
i literally quit at the demo, its controls were absolutely retarded. the whole combat system was awfull. after that i took a look at direct gameplay and reviews, and it all just doubled down on my initial impression.
Angel Wood
No, he's saying that because Samus thinks she has to sacrifice herself to defeat the X when there's another way.
Carter Stewart
best part is mom ripped off samuses initial development and "taking up the mantel" character arc from the manga, to a T.
it was like a bad fanfic.
Blake Flores
It gives you a free charge only when you successfully dodge an attack. My point was that if you're just spamming the input in preparation for whatever attack's coming, instead of knowing when to dodge exactly, you're going to probably be missing additional opportunities to do damage.
Wyatt Ross
and? so the only punishment for lack of skill in one action is that fight take longer, not even more difficult, just take longer.
that just retarded. its just trying to be a shitty action game now. with a terrible control scheme. and id hardly call any of this "difficult" the inputs and timings could be achieved by a baby.
Ethan Morris
>It gives you a free charge only when you successfully dodge an attack. And the game actively prevents you from failing because of how damn easy it is to dodge an attack. Please, do not tell me you actually had a hard time in this game.
Daniel Wilson
>look buddy, weve all had enough time to digest it,its ass. >i literally quit at the demo
lmao
I'm starting to think that the most vocal and passionate haters for this game tend to be those that have spent the least amount of time with it (if at all).
Seriously, people act like this shit is Sonic 06 tier. That is just absurd. It was a pretty big misstep, but that speaks in no small part for the high standards and pedigree of the series.
Benjamin Williams
Hard mode was pretty damn challenging, yes.
You sound like the kind of person that would bitch about the Batman Arkham games' combat because you can technically just mash counter for a lot of encounters. You can, but that's a shit way to play the game.
Jonathan Gomez
>Seriously, people act like this shit is Sonic 06 tier. That is just absurd. I repeat. This is a Metroid game with the focus on story, linearity, and Samus being weak and helpless. Not to mention game mechanics designed to dodge and shoot at enemies for you, removing any need for you to actually think or plan ahead before moving into a room.
"It's not as bad as Sonic 06" Didn't I tell you to go to bed Sakamoto?
Jason Kelly
>hard mode was pretty damn challenging
Heh. That's funny.
Noah Taylor
spoken like someone who didn't play.
Zachary Martin
I can't play a movie, as I am not a DVD player. As if the game wasn't already content playing itself.
Benjamin Jones
>at least gameplay wise >forced over-the-shoulder sections >Where's Waldo? sections >missiles are unintuitive as fuck and basically shoehorned in as "Hey, remember Metroid Prime? So do we!" >soundtrack has no memorable tunes at all It looks good for a Wii game, and the transitions between cutscenes are pretty seamless at times, but other than that the game has nothing going for it.
Ryder Powell
It had a massive price drop for a reason
Oliver Wright
sonic 06, frighteningly enough, is more enjoyable than m.o.m. at lest the ordeal and frustration can be seen as entertainment to masochists.
i have see the whole game. i have seen the gameplay. i played the demo and the fact you find the controls acceptable is insane.
this speaks nothing for how simple and effortless the game is. the is no reason to play it. there is no reason to even like it.
thats a lie, they have several core fighting mechanics that prevent this. knife users, the extra large foes, and body armor users all countered this. not to mention how many encounters involved picking off key threats with firearms and so such.
are you gonna even try? weve been tearing youre half assed arguments apart, and you can say is" youre just making it up, you dont know how it plays"
if you actually knew what you were talking about you would be actually correcting us instead of going "nu uhu" and make up fake comparisons.
Hudson Russell
Other M's base gameplay was solid.
Unfortunately, they had to ruin that by adding those awful scavenger hunt sections, that awkward use of missiles, the extreme linearity, and an insistence on using NES mode Wiimote only. Remove all those and the game part of Other M would be fine.
there's no saving that story though jesus fucking christ.
Cooper Myers
I don't know why you seem to be assuming that I'm ready to defend the plot. I'm defending the gameplay though, and not because it's perfect, but because it's not the steaming turd it's made out to be. Hence my... whole damn comment about series standards. People demand perfection from Metroid, and that's not a criticism mind you, but I believe a lot have let these standards make Other M seem a lot worse than it is. especially for those who are content on dismissing it without playing it
What makes you say that? Did you have an easy time with it? I doubt that.
There's a lot of opportunities to take damage in this game, and despite what some of you seem to be trying to push here, the sense move isn't an all-in-one get out of jail free card for literally everything. It's not uncommon to get swiped by something when you're focused on fighting.
Austin Cruz
>the game is just fine >how dare you criticize it?! You're just sonyggers!
I don't know why I keep responding. At this point I'm just convinced you guys are baiting. Or you're marketers trying to market Other M's port for the Switch.
I wouldn't doubt either.
Adrian Reed
>i have see the whole game. i have seen the gameplay. i played the demo and the fact you find the controls acceptable is insane
Man, where the fuck did I even mention the controls as a whole. That said, they are plenty workable and the game is designed well enough around them despite being unconventional and weird.
You're telling me you're confused that someone who's played a shitton more of the game than you has less issue with the controls? Are you dumb?
Asher Reyes
the main problem with this game is the long unskippable cutscenes because the story is ass and it feels like a chore watching them
I have several complaints about gameplay but if I allow myself to get into detail I will just get angry at the game again and this post will be tl;dr tier
Ethan Ortiz
to be fair we still occasionally make new tuuuubes comics.
godamit fucker i KNEW you were playing devils advocate
David Morris
>List the grievous flaws in the gameplay. >Get called a marketer.
You're a special kind of dumb, aren't you?
Parker Sanchez
>games need auto-aim and mechanics that let you instantly dodge enemies, regenerate health and regen missiles
Who let neogaf into the thread?
Dominic Jones
>thats a lie, they have several core fighting mechanics that prevent this. knife users, the extra large foes, and body armor users all countered this. not to mention how many encounters involved picking off key threats with firearms and so such.
dude, I actually went out of my way to phrase my arkham comment to not indicate I was talking about literally every encounter but you somehow took it that way anyways. yeah, you're dumb,
fuck you
Zachary Scott
This. Even the gameplay of that game was fucking terrible. I'm not sure why people defend it.
Elijah Jones
>saying that Other M's base gameplay is perfect is "listing grievous flaws"
No, that's called lying. Nothing about Other M is solid, you'd have to be crazy to think anything from this trainwreck is salvageable.
>b-but muh comfy epic quick time event attacks
Go play God of War if you want that. It doesn't belong in Metroid.
Easton Brooks
I don't understand why they didn't go with an over-the-shoulder camera or something. Running around with the nunchuk and aiming with the Wiimote, mixed in with all the acrobatic shit would've been badass.
Brayden Turner
jesus fuck it takes a special amount of stupid to take a post like and pass it off as the complete opposite of what was said
I don't even like Other M that much. It's among my least favorite games in the series and is far below the series highs. But defend it just a little bit and boom, it's like you're suddenly saying it's the best game ever to some people.
Ryder Lee
>saying that Other M's base gameplay is perfect
Where was this?
Christopher Peterson
I finished the game hoping it would get good at some point but that only made me hate it more
Samuel Morris
im saying is i find it incredulous that you diddnt get fed up with the awful controls right out the gate.
the missile system is especially bad. and the pitifully autonomous gameplay was the initial signal that it would be shit.
now never mind that if i want an action game i could have a million other, fundamentally better options, even from mediocre or one off games.
my point is this: why the hell would you say this game is a game worth playing?
its story is ass, so its not that.
the visuals are inferior to last gen stuff, so it cant be that.
exploration is practically forbidden. so thats out.
challenge isnt there, its all either painfully obvious or blatantly fake.
gameplay is repetitive and unsatisfying, nothing is really rewarding or satisfying for one reason or another. despite all the action they put in.
really, why bother defending any of it? everything is ass. and not even one part makes up for it, even a little bit.
Daniel Murphy
>people who don't like the game play it less than people who do you don't say
Kayden Edwards
Don't even bother, just trust everyone on this, they are completely correct. Here's a very easy drinking game for you: Drink every time you hear "The baby"
Within the first 30 minutes of the game you will be completely shitfaced, Samus will not stop talking about it over and over and over again, all her thoughts are about The Baby™, and the few thoughts she has about Adam are that she trusts him because he hates the way she acts.
All the cutscenes are not only unskippable but they're slow and they are so horrendously monotone and boring you will want ANYTHING to happen and it never does, and the one or two times it does it's completely underwhelming. Samus is absolute shit, she's monotone throughout the entire game, and all her talks or inner monologues are just the longest and most boring shit imaginable and you're stuck through it. She also refuses to use items she already has because "They don't know if there's life on the ship yet and missiles will cause too much damage" but then you immediately get unrestricted use of missiles five seconds later.
Gameplay is terrible, anything you enjoyed from previous Metroid games is thrown out the window. Fights are clunky messes if they involve the missiles because you have to stop moving, turn to the enemy, point at the screen, aim at the enemy, shoot, turn the controller back, and then dodge. Normal battles are completely thoughtless because you can usually just run up to something with a charge beam and jump on it to instantly kill it, or you can just mash on dodge until you get the instant charge beam it gives and use that since the window for a dodge is enormous. Hidden items are hidden in a way that they're either in plain sight or they're hidden in a way that only first person mode in a specific spot could have seen the actual thing so they make it so our map updates once you clear out an entire room of enemies if that room has a hidden item.
It's awful.
Noah Bell
The problem is that you're using meticulously crafted, shill approved strawmen to make Other M seem better than it is. Sentences like this for example:
>but I believe a lot have let these standards make Other M seem a lot worse than it is
You're implying that it's somehow okay for Other M to have these horrible design features because "the series has high standards". No, it isn't okay. These are cancers in the industry and would instantly ruin any game they touched, regardless of genre or developer or platform.
For goodness sake, you're defending the game having 3+ hours of unskippable cinematics. You're quite literally saying "Metroid needs more story". You're defending the worst aspects of the series, then downplaying all criticism by saying "it's not that bad, you guys are just entitled!"
I'm sick of hearing that, and I'm frankly sick of having people discard perfectly legitimate criticisms in the name of brand loyalty and a sense of wanting to be contrarian.
So to sum up my post; the game is terrible. It is the worst thing to ever have existed in the medium. Previous games having high standards does not excuse the game suddenly plunging so low that it's digging up dinosaur bones.
Liam Murphy
>It's really not nearly as bad as some people like to say it is, at least gameplay wise It seriously, really is.
>The main thing is that Adam sucks. Doesn't tell the story properly. The real way to phrase it is "Adam is ruined as badly as Samus is" because, even though it's not a whole lot we get, we do get some portrayal of Good Guy Adam in Fusion and the Metroid manga. So we know what could have been, and we know how badly they fucked it up, and how impressive it is that they fucked up something to that extent when there wasn't that much to fuck up in the very first place.
Don't forget the fact that it's more linear than Fusion with virtually no exploration within that linearity, something Fusion didn't have trouble with. And the tank control sections. And the scavenger hunt sections. And Sakamoto crippling the game by forcing the game to not use the Nunchuk so that using missiles and switching to first-person became horrifyingly clumsy.
Isaac Phillips
Look dude, I have nothing to discuss with you since you've barely played the game. I had some fun with it, particularly when it came to movement, the combat, traversing a 3D Metroid with an especially mobile Samus, and the challenge present in hard mode.
You've experienced little or even none of some of the above. I just can't work with you.
Nolan Martinez
As soon as I saw movement in a 3D space was going to be handled by a D-Pad I had to do a double-take when the Nunchuk went completely unused, I don't understand what in the world they were thinking. All they needed to do was have Z or C bring up FPS mode, that's literally it.
Joseph Kelly
Does this game use motion controls? I'd like to emulate it but I can't connect anything bluetooth to my PC.
Brody Flores
>ITT the same 3 primecucks circlejerk once again about how a proper metroid is "bad" because it's not more primeshit
Bentley Murphy
Look, he's an asshole and deserves to be slapped for forming an opinion without giving the real game a chance, then crowing about how right he is based on what other people say without finding out firsthand himself.
But from someone who was hyped for a potential GotY candidate and played the whole thing front-to-back and got 100% completion to get the bonus ending and boss fight, I can tell you that it really is as offensively awful as he is saying it is, in every single respect. It's one of the worst games I've ever played (granted I haven't really played that many awful games) and it's certainly the one I hate the most.
Anthony Walker
Yes, the missile system and one other pointing system requires it to get past obstacles and shoot certain doors so you need to point at the screen to switch to FPS mode.
Xavier Gray
>this thread
Adam Scott
OP here, and I'm not a fan of the Prime series.
Benjamin Murphy
>muh imaginary internet bogeyman
tighten your tinfoil hat good sir.
Jayden Flores
Oh my fucking god. You're not one to talk about strawmen when this whole thing is strawmen: the post.
>You're implying that it's somehow okay for Other M to have these horrible design features because "the series has high standards". No, it isn't okay
I've made it clear several times already that I don't believe the game deserves its most virulent hate. aka, the kind that paints in as a complete piece of trash across the board. The plot direction, voice acting, and characterization deserve all the flack it gets but I had enough fun with the game aspect to think that the game isn't a total wreck as is popularly assumed. This doesn't mean that I'm okay with or have praise for every aspect of the gameplay.
>For goodness sake, you're defending the game having 3+ hours of unskippable cinematics. You're quite literally saying "Metroid needs more story". You're defending the worst aspects of the series, then downplaying all criticism by saying "it's not that bad, you guys are just entitled
no I am fucking not doing any of this. what the hell.
>I'm sick of hearing that, and I'm frankly sick of having people discard perfectly legitimate criticisms in the name of brand loyalty and a sense of wanting to be contrarian.
This is such a shitty way to condense my posts. I have plenty of criticism for the game. Your problem is that you feel so strongly about your completely uncompromisingly extreme opinion (that everything about the game is shit) that you're totally shut off to the idea of someone legitimately liking even a single thing about it. Why can't you just agree to disagree instead of resorting to all this stupid strawman shit and then projecting so hard about it? You seriously need some perspective. You probably don't even realize that you're being such a turd.
why do you guys have to be impossible like this I mean c'mon
Jordan Rodriguez
I'm the guy who's been on the defensive for most of the thread and fuck you.
Wyatt Kelly
Why is it so expensive? You can get it for not even ten bucks on ebay now.
