How is it possible that fallout 4 struggles to load an object 30 meters away at walk speed when you can drive fast as hell in gta v on PC smooth as glass in a world that's even bigger and with more actors?

not to mention that fallout has load screens every 5 minutes, while gta just has the long startup time and no loading after that.

is bethesda just that bad? will they improve when they scrap their old game engine?

Engine limitations. Bethesda's going to hang on to the Gamebryo engine until the very end. It works better for their game worlds because it keeps better track of thousands of in-game objects and where they've been moved too. But it still comes with the steep cost of shitty graphics, glitches, and crashes. Plus, it's easier to just recycle assets from their previous games into their new ones.

Considering the only interactive objects in GTA are people and cars versus nearly everything in a Bethesda game I think it makes sense. People shit all over their tech but you don't see any other company trying anything close to that level of interactivity.

This. It's the engine. Bethesda is still using reworked Gamebryo because they love da money train, and would rather be able to squirt a game ever 2-3 years rather than take a few years and develop a modern engine.

I love how people think relatively small studios like Bethesda are at all comparable to fucking ridiculously huge studios like Rockstar.

Bethesda hover around the 100 mark, and not all of them work on the same game...the team for Skyrim was fucking TINY, meanwhile Rockstar have well over ten times that many people, hell more than 1000 people worked on GTA V.

Granted Bethesda absolutely aren't pushing the technological or artistic envelope, but this sort of shit doesn't just magically improve without serious manpower.

Everything in Witcher is static except the people and monsters though.

They have the money to hire a similar amount of staff though.

Fallout 4 is basically the same strung together engine since Morrowind. There's nothing wrong with having an engine that still has some legacy footprint and bits left behind like Source and Cowadooty, but expect the worst from BGS.

To be fair, moving trains were only in one of the DLCs, so they had to do what they could with the engine the game was already made in. That said, holy fuck they need a new engine.

First of all fucking no one is going to give Bethesda a quarter of a billion dollars to even get them into the same league as GTA V, secondly the logistical nightmare of ramping up to a team more than ten times that of the original and additional start up costs associated with it.....as well as developing brand new tech. You'd be spending close to half a billion dollars......and there's NO way you'd ever see a decent return on that.

What about The Witcher developer? That game is much, much better looking, a better game in every sense of the word and yet they are a pretty small studio who clearly punch above their weight class.

CD Projeckt aren't a "pretty small studio", almost 250+ people worked on Witcher 3 and it's development budget was 80+ million USD....and their wages are incredibly cheap compared to those in the US.

Not by a long shot, GTA V has sold over 70 million copies.

Skyrim has sold somewhere in the range of 20-25 million.

TW3 cost $80 million whereas Skyrim cost $90 million. It's safe to say that Fallout 4 cost even more than Skyrim and yet their game doesn't hold a candle to TW3.

There is literally nothing wrong with this you don't see it ever and the only way is to noclip out of the map. In fact it's a nice use of time and resource saving. Bethesda is a shit company but this is really clever. Imagine if they spent time to make an actual train work for about 10 seconds in a dlc.
