Mindfuck? Not really. You're just thrown into a world where a lot of ancient magi-tech exists and a lot of bad shit is leaking out of it.
Consider it more like, say, Shadowrun where the world occasionally fucks itself up so bad it forces a reset, but the godly relics of the previous World's iteration are buried deep beneath the surface until people find them and start FUCKING WITH THEM and cause the cycle of Bad Shit Happens to begin again.
Quests and setting are pretty good, not sure I'd call it a mindfuck.

Don't be silly, those 'normies' would watch Ross' Game Dungeon or some shit and then get turned off when Ross goes "OH NO, THE COMBAT SUCKS", when it's obvious he is just using builder skills in the first place.
No in the slightest. Great game but it's pretty straight forward for the most part. The setting itself is a hodge podge of mythology, cthulu, and so on. Good fucking game, shame the combat is so bland and boring. Gotten 3 friends to try it, none could get over that hurdle.

the publisher was EA and it was supposed to be released around the time tortanic would also get released and we all know all the money EA had thrown at it

It's not terrible, but I lost interest really quickly.
It's odd, there is some seriously great creativity on display, the quest where you have to die was a particularly great example. But the combat, sheesh. Dull as a doorknob.
But the combat does suck

I found the initial Kingsmouth zones were the most interesting, with a clear Lovecraftian inspiration and good atmosphere. But nothing mindblowing. It kind of goes downwards from there. Transylvania is ok. Egypt was more boring.
The combat system is fine. A shame they didn't remake the animations and sounds. Many abilities from the skill wheel have no real use, nor synergy; it's kind of an ivory tower design where you have to find out which abilities are the good ones and which ones are there to mess with you. That's easy to do thanks to all the theorycrafting published. Even with that, it's free enough to keep being interesting and open to changes you might want to make in your build.
I played the basic content from packs 1-4, nightmare dungeons, scenario grind from pack 8... Once you get there it becomes your typical gear grind game and quite hardcore at that, since it has various layers of upgrades (gear, glyphs, signets, augmentations).
Nah, just a decent waste of time.

The only problem with the abilities I find is 2 fold

Could've done what Diablo 2 did where the earlier abilities got alot more powerful the more you unlock

Funnels builds towards 1 focus rather than the two weapons you have access to.
When I started off I used Shotgun/Blood magic and in the end I just went with Shotgun and 1 heal spell, going for elite heal spells would simply make fights last longer, simpler to just kill things quick and heal out of combat.
